There are millions of Americans who cannot get ANY health care, I would prefer a system that tried to cure me rather then one that decided i was too poor to treat.

As for AIDS victims being scum? IN America there are cases of infected blood transfusions etc In Africa babies are being born with the illness, describing these people as filth seems misguided at best.

Also our hospitals have trillions of pounds of funds generated by national insurance payments, its a misguided idea that health care is free in UK, every single working person pays insurance by law - however if you have a complication in surgery during pregnancy you are not then charged an extra $135,000 as happened to my american friend in the states- Now she has to choose between paying bills or feeding her baby.

Hiking retirement ages up
well this just makes sense as life expectancy goes up.

Charging for schooling (college and uni)
Universities have always charged, there has never been a free uni.
Colleges in my country are still free.

Reducing unemployment packages such as guaranteed pay after unemployed
Unemployment payment was never gaurunteed, you need to prove you are seeking employment to recieve a package and after so many months government can give you a "do this job or we stop paying" choice.

Reducing or eliminating pay per child policies
Certainly not true in my country, cant comment on others

Reducing pensions
State Pensions are being reduced world wide as life expectency goes up, how is the state pension in America?

Reducing public employee pay (14 months pay a year in Greece, wow!)
One Country, wages aint decreasing but are either freezing or having a smaller increase then expected

Also lots of European countries aint part of the Euro.

So now the election dust has settled I feel I should now vent some of my concerns over the new policies emerging about Education, Economy and Political Freedom.

Education
The government has announced the plans to encourage businesses and parents groups to set up their own schools semi independant from the government - These so called academies have been on trial for a while now in the UK, the last three academies to be OFSTED assessed have all been found to be unsatisfactory - The government has announced a cut in funding for state schools so they can pump more money into these academies.
They plan to allow schools to set teachers wages and timetables independantly from National Guidance, at the moment as a teacher my pay scale is in line with a national average - if I worked in a good city school my wage would be no different if I worked in a good rural school (where I currently do) - this new measure will give larger schools the ability to take teachers from smaller schools and will leave students worse off.
They plan to cut 40,000 jobs across the NHS and Education.

Economy
At the moment it is predicted the new government will raise VAT to 20% despite promises not to.
They have announced that banks need bringing under more control and be forced to lend to small businesses - however their way of doing this is to set up a commitee which in a years time will make a reccomendation to the government on how to plan their future strategy. Essentially meaning the banks are free to act how they wish for a minimum of twelve months.

Political Freedom
Two things annoy me here.
First is raising the time limit of the standard government from 4 years to 5. At the moment only exceptional circumstances (leader change etc) can let a government go for five years - They wish to make this standard essentially giving them longer in power.

Secondly they wish to raise the vote needed to dissolve parliament - at the moment 50% of MPs plus 1 is enough by our unwritten constitution to dissolve a parliament. The conservatives wish to raise this figure to 55% plus 1. This means (due to Sinn Fein not being able to sit in parliament) that if every single political party in the House of Commons ganged up on the conservatives and voted to dissolve parliament the figure is only 53% - Even though the tories are a minority government if they lose Liberal support this new measure would give them the security of a majority one. (both these measures I do believe were also employed by the Nazi party lol)

A few other things irritate me, the plan to legalise fox hunting, raising interest rates on student loans, allowing universities to up their tuition fees once more, getting rid of teachers PPA time, cutting the spending on the armed forces etc a freeze on pay for all public sector workers (NHS, Schools, Government etc) and they will campaign against any voting reform that could see the actuall percentage of votes a party recieves into account.

Rant over!

Now now calm down everyone

Einstein asked for his opinion on the candidates, obviously some people are going to have negative opinions.

That said Arfeh simply saying someone is crazy and running off adds nothing to the debate - bring reasons for your opinion or its you who begins to sound "batshit crazy".

A moderate Republican who isnt too old and looks like bringing the party closer to the middle then the right could do very well at the next election, which of them fits that model best do you think?

I still think the high profile drubbing Palin has gotten from the media (whether you think its fair or not) would make her a poor choice.

Like it or not many people form their views from popular culture and in America it was popular culture that mocked Palin (indeed some even suggesting she was the reason the Republicans lost)

I think the Republican party needs a break from the past and genuinly move forward with a fresh candidate.

I think out of those the only two who should NOT run are McCain and Palin.

I think Palin proved she cannot handle interviews, she comes across as the image democrats would like to paint on all republicans - a shouty non intellectual.

McCain had his chance and frankly blew it spectacularly - when there is clear example of Republicans voting for Obama simply because he is better then the Republican candidate you know you have messed up. Though I hate to say it age is also an issue, many were saying he was too old to run, four years later this would become a real issue.

I have no real knowledge of some of the others, I think dismissing Romney due to his religious beliefs would be foolish - personal belief should not impact on the running of the country (for instance I am Christian but were I to be in office I would not suddenly pass pro christianity laws).

I think love or hate Obama he has re galvanised American politics, many people who did not vote last time (both pro and anti Obama) will be flocking to the polling stations in the next election which can only be a good thing - It was fairly foregone conclusion Obama would beat McCain, I dont think it will be anything like that at the next election

As an RE teacher I feel I should point out most Muslims do not believe in the Mahdi it is the minority shia Muslims that do.

In fact the prophet 99% of Muslims believe will return for judgement day is Isa (Jesus).

None of Irans neighbours would allow them to gain that influence, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan are all Sunni countries that eye Iran with suspicion, Iraq hates Iran with a passion after the war.

Iran is within its right to pursue nuclear technology (including missiles). It seems hypocritical to allow India and Pakistan to develop nukes but then block another country because we dont like them (Hell I dispise Iran but to be honest if I thought America was considering an invasion and was in charge of Iran I would make sure we developed nukes ASAP)

I also think you have to take into context Irans history - they tend to depose leaders who have overtly positive feelings towards the west so every now and then the leaders feel the need to rattle the sabre, Iran has missiles that can reach Israel now. If they believed as strongly as they claim that it should be destroyed they would use their missiles.

Hey Chris, thanks for the link it was really interesting - There does seem to be a definite link with kidnapping at least (a crime that is never justifiable)

To be fair my first post was more poking fun at the issue then being serious, I agree all country need limits on immigration but after the post by einstein of "lets invade mexico" etc the issue of immigration is one source of amusement just for the reactions it garners from certain quarters.

As far as I know about the Arizona laws they are not protesting against the laws that apply to every person in America but a law that is targetting them specifically - I still have little sympathy as my attitude is and always will be that if the country you have immigrated to offends you so much then they should leave it.

Oh my word, somewhere at the end of a computer is a person I genuinly think believes what he is typing......*shudders*

A troll is someone who mindlessly flames or throws insults or blatantly off topic, I did none.

I spoke about immigration, Obamas response and then merely responded to you.

As to your claim you did not resort to insults? "I'm not going to waste more time embarrassing myself in response to a child."

Truth requires more then your "its true because i say it" logic.

My friend grow up and stop being the embarrising ambasador for your nation, I like America but sadly these forums are home to the occasional low brow right winger like yourself - I readily admit that I am now insulting and stooping to your level but sadly even the most mild mannered person will respond when they step in fecal matter

To be fair to Greece and Spain the politicians in the UK have hardly painted themselves in glory

Back on topic though, how do people feel about constitutions?

I responded to your comments directed at me, I think if you took the time to learn about spamming you would realise you have gone closer to doing it in this thread then I have.

I do think the topic should be closed unless others are willing to join as at the moment it seems to be "sweeping statement by V Kemp" "challenge by Khaz" "tirade of insults from v kemp"

If you cannot debate without resorting to insults a forum for adults might not be the best place for you.

So you wouldnt care about Americans becoming criminals and murdering people but you find it appalling that illegals could do that? Nice logic.

I have read many news sites that report that percentage wise illegal immigrants commit far less crime than the "native" American populus (though this is clearly failing to realise that by American law they are all criminals for entering the country seeking a better life)

If you had read my posts I actually do talk about why I think Obama not stooping to the level of the Mexican politician was a good move.

Again you resort to insults - thus propagating the image of the angry right wing American - When people disagree with you you get angry and shout obscenities and cuddle yourself with your supposed superior intellect - Though I congratulate you, you have brought me down to your level of insults, something Obama was wise enough to avoid in the initial topic.

"Why do you call it paranoia to point out that Americans are being murdered in large numbers because of illegals?"

Provide statatistics if you are going to make such remarks. For instance I could equally say "Illegals are being murdered in large numbers because of Americans".

Both statements are equally valid if truth cannot be ascertained.

Obama came off better as he is seen to not be stooping to the level of a hypocrit who has come off looking a jack ass.

I also like that after 7 years on the forum with you, you still believe that firing an insult at somebody and running away is proof you won an argument.

Provide statistics that prove that percentage wise immigrants are responsible for more crime then Americans.

Provide statistics that prove most kidnappings in America is caused by immigration.

Why do you attack others for making sweeping statements when you yourself have made many?

My statement was anecdotal based on my experience discussing immigration with American friends and with people on these boards in the past, I admit that in this sort of debate anecdotal evidence is not sufficient and I accept I shouldnt use it, but so far it is all you yourself seem to be using.

As to your offence at Obama not calling the Mexican leader on his comments? Maybe he did in private, perhaps he wanted to seem reasonable and a good statesman rather then rebuking a foreign leader on television?

I should qualify the "kill them" comment was not aimed at you kemp but lovely friendly folks like einstein tongue

The parallel with Israel is they have an open border policy to Jews in the diaspora and this fuels the need to expand the territory the country claims to facilitate the incoming immigrants - I believe if America opened its borders it would need to begin looking at expanding territory (which in the modern world is not really acceptable)

Paranoid in that the topic of immigration is one of fear for many Americans - America was made by immigration but now many Americans believe they are superior to immigrants and think that they undermine the country.

Not to be an arse but I always find it amusing that a nation founded by immigrants, which doesnt have a single area of its culture that is not influenced, borrowed or stolen from other countries and immigrants, whose very own president is the son of an immigrant.....can be so paranoid about immigration!

Yes it needs to be kept in check, you cant have open borders or you end up with the same problem Israel has but the whole "immigrants want to come here.....we should kill them!" seems a bit overboard

I have been reading lots recently about constitutions and the good and bad involved in them.

Obviously one of the most famous and earliest forms of a written constitution was the Instrument of Government introduced into England in 1653. This constitution was eventually thrown out by Oliver Cromwell as MPs kept trying to ammend or add to the constitution. It was argued that it was pointless writing down a set of rules if you merely alter them whenever it suits.

England now has what is called an unwritten constitution which seems to be based around manners and "decency" though this obviously caused a lot of confusion after the recent general election (people demanding Gordon Brown resign as PM before the constitution would allow him) and again people are arguing these accepted rules are wrong.

The US constitution seems very limiting of the american government and whenever they mention changing some of the rules or adding to them two camps spring up on here with those screaming you cant change the constitution and those thinking it is an outdated system that is holding the country of the US back.

So I am curios, if you are pro constitution why? Same question to those who are against it.

I think the war crime tribunals based around the Serbian conflicts are a joke.
Does not mean all war crime tribunals are however.

I actually think Saddam was a special case, no it should not have been handed over to the Hague but at the same time America could have handled things better. At the end of the day he was executed in the name of his own people and it was no more then he deserved.

The idea that the Hague should be done away with is a frightening one though, there needs to be some international court to decide on war criminals otherwise it would be anarchy. Every captured general from the losing conflict could be executed as "war criminals" if it was left to each individual nation.

I personally do not hate America or Americans in general, many of my friends are American.
What I will say is that I dislike certain American policies, I dislike some American news sources and I dislike some American groups.
That said dont go thinking your special, I dislike some British policies, News sources and groups!
As to the others on here, I think its probably easier when typing to say you hate America rather then specifying what specifics you dislike.
I also think it varies based on experience, one of my American friends moved to the UK a year ago and had not heard of Guantanemo (SP?) bay or some of the controversy surrounding it. Because I know other Americans I was able to put it down to this person being un informed, if it was the only American I had met I may have reacted with "Oh my god are Americans a) Stupid or B) Never get told whats going on in the news".
Not justifying the people that jump to these conclusions but I guess it is human nature.

How many Americans on here have dismissed Europe as being idiotic jealous douchebags based on a couple of random internet forum users tongue

Ok guys, yes we have free dental care, yes it can get stupid at times but we also have a private dentistry sector as well.
Those that can afford private dental care go for it and its a great service, those that cant may have to wait to see their dentist but at least they will get seen at some point.
Its better then no dental care at all.

I have to admit my teeth are in a terrible state, however its due to the vast amount of coca-cola I drink! An evil American conspiracy to keep their cartoons in visual gags when visiting Britain tongue

Every country is stereotyped to be fair, Americans are stupid and fat, English are intellectual and buck toothed, Irish are drunks, Scots are incoherent, Welsh are patriotice hobbits demanding attention, French are smelly cowards, Germans will always be marching teutonic bastions of ill humour and Australians are...well pretty much every stereotype going!

Hey guys sorry to harken back to the earlier posts but just had a flick through, you do all know the British were fighting the pacific campaign as well right? We were at war with Japan before they bombed pearl harbour. (This wasnt intended as a dig at America or anything of the sort, I dunno, I just sometimes get annoyed when even kids in this country aint aware we were involved against Japan!)
I personally think that for an empire that had spent its might and was in massive decline that fighting Germany, Italy and Japan on our own and surviving until Russia and America joined was one hell of an achievement!

Secondly I dont think you can judge every mainland European like that, yeah there are those as you describe but many others similar to yourself. You wouldnt try to dismiss all Americans as red necks etc etc.

Thirdly, this thread was pretty much started specifically to be a flame war, I found that nearly all threads on our politics forum are made with a particular bias and always end up with "AMERICA SUXEH! EUROPE SUXEH! DEMOCRATS SUXEH! REPUBLICANS SUXEH! BRITAIN SUXEH! DECIMUS/FLINT/BLACKWING SUXEH"
Its kind of a shame as I used to love this lil forum :s
