Pie,

Totally agree. And people just aren't honest with each other these days.

dpenguins,

I would call outlawing marital rape a good thing. But husbands still feel cheated if their wives deny them sex, and women put out to maintain their hopefully mutually advantageous partnership.

Arbolio,

Forgive my skepticism

Kemp,

The cake may have more icing in relationships, but the icing still rests of money.

And prostitution can resemble a kind of quasi-relationship over time.

LOL. My point is that we should at least be consistent. Besides, it's unhealthy to pay for sex with a girlfriend or wife while pretending you really aren't. It's institutionalized dishonesty.

1. Marriage is prostitution
- Men are expected to wooo a woman by paying for dates and an expensive engagement ring
- Husbands typically earn more money than their wives, and wives put out for their husbands
- Women are usually the recipients of alimony

2. Prostitution is a crime

____

3. Therefore, marriage is a crime

Unfortunately, the state registers and celebrates the prostitute and the john in one form of prostitution but is intolerant of other forms...

Genesis,

In an ideal world, yeah. In the real world the government can not keep guns out of the hands of dedicated criminals.

No she doesn't lol.

I would only kill if it was to protect my life or someone important to me. Since I am an egoist, I wouldn't be willing to die for any causes or many people. However, I would be willing to die for my escort. I'm not really sure why, other than I just feel that way about her.

Flint,

Chavez is part of what we call the "new left." They frequently include postmodernists, counter culture, socialists and anarchists etc. Liberals are called the "old left." The two don't get along very well. For the most part, old leftists want to tame capitalism not replace it.

But you are right. New leftists have a habit of forming cults of personality and it's rather amusing.

I mostly just watch him on youtube on occasion. I'm glad civilized and skilled directors/musicians still exist. When I notice that hip hop and rap crap, I sometimes wonder if music is becoming a lost art.

The funny thing is that conservatives heavily borrow from Liberalism, in the philosophical sense..

The Founders explicitly expressed contempt for the plebs, lol. I'm inclined to agree with them.

The main worry for Federalists was that factionalism between elite interests would tear the country apart, and the anti-Federalists were mainly worried about the centralization of power.

Report income

Done

Simple.

Get rid of tax breaks for married couples filing jointly. It's absurd, tax breaks just because you're married? I'm tired of being single and getting screwed in taxes.

Yell,

My guess is that you would use weapons to resist a person intending to cause you great bodily harm. I don't think a reasonable person would question that deadly force is acceptable in such circumstances.

But that isn't my point. What if an employer asks his employees to donate their time to repair his house and they consent? This immediately raises the question if such consent is meaningless or not. Some employees may fear getting fired, so they consent to avoid a severe outcome. So my questions for the Libertarian are: Is that a violation of a person's free will? Should the government prevent such coercion like they do with explicit force? Should the employer genuinely inform his employees that they won't be punished if they refuse?

144

(9 replies, posted in Politics)

Kemp/anyone else who wants to answer it.

Do Libertarians think of consent as "yes means yes" or "yes but maybe no?" By that I mean, could a person articulate consent but only because they feel there will be severe consequences to saying "no?" For clarification, I believe Libertarians would agree that someone could be under duress because of a knife, but what about those dealing with social norms and unequal power relations? If so:

1. Is it ever relevant?
2. Do those with power have a moral obligation to defuse their implicit coercive power for the weaker party?
3. Should the state protect weaker parties from such coercion?

Apollo,

Is killing an ant murder? Is killing enemy soldiers in battle murder? No. Because murder is defined by legal structures, and abortion is not classified as such.

Prohibition of abortions = women have no value except as sex toys, domestic servants and childcare givers.

1. I'm fine with it, in principle.

2. I'm fine with it, for the most part.

3. Proposed compromise:
- The government does not fund any art.
- Let states choose whether they fund abortions and under what circumstances.
- You agree that, as an atheist I can go about my life without getting harassed to conform to Christian religious norms in the workplace and at school. So, for example, companies would not be able to organize prayers, which creates a hostile work environment. I am willing to tolerate some religion in public spaces like Christmas parades etc. Just don't force me to participate in religious activities at work or school, or force me to make the choice to play along or risk getting ostracized at work or school. In turn, I will agree to leave Christians alone to practice their religion without provocation.
- You oppose evangelical efforts to have the government privilege Christianity.

4. Proposed compromise:
- Better laws and enforcement to prevent rent-seeking between business and government.
- Declare unions in violation of Anti-Trust laws, but permit workers to form associations and collectively bargain.
- We keep worker safety laws.

5. No
- While I don't support pacifism, I am opposed to intervention when it serves no national interest. If the UK military is suddenly under stress from a commie revolution and they need reinforcements, then I support intervention. If tribal idiots in Somalia want to kill each other, stay out of it.

6. Agreed.

7. Agreed, for the most part. I'm sure we would disagree on details though.

8. Agreed, except I am skeptical of vouchers. But kill the teacher's unions, definitely. I mean, how DARE they oppose meritocracy.

9. Not sure what this means. But, I agree that government assistance is often too generous and perversely encourages dependency.

10. Fine with it for the most part.

11. Proposed compromise:
- The government abolishes civil marriage, so only religious people get married.

12. Agreed

13. Selfishness is a virtue! But agreed, no foreign aid.

EVE Online rocks.

The Catholic Church only talks about relativism because post-modernists are an easy scapegoat. But outside their little academic ivory tower, almost nobody believes in relativism. Furthermore, most academics consider post-modernism to be ridiculous, even those on the left.

The battle of world views is between one that recognizes an authority as the foundation of knowledge and one that recognizes experience as the foundation of knowledge. It's that simple.
