the criticism of "limits to growth" was to a large extent adressed in "Beyond the Limits" (1992)

agree with little paul

they could perhaps slash it to 3 or 2 subs, having some round the clock somewhat worldwide deterrence is better than not having it at all

I find the acting in SGU top notch for a TV show to be honest... the technical writing and screenplay is even better. I get annoyed at the overly dramatic elements of the show as much as the next sci fi fan, but as a TV critic I have to say that their conception and execution is always good.

the bad guys in the franchise all kept their populations numbers down due to constant warfare or culling, with low technological development being a side effect from their subjugation to false gods or constant resetting due to the culling;

naturally the ori also kept their follower's technology extremely low tech, the only thing I find incredible is that they also seemed to be fairly low in numbers whereas they would have preferred as much followers as they could afford because it gave them more power; but then we didn't really see much of the ori galaxy so for all we know the ori did maintain a much higher population level than its intrinsic technological level could ever hope to maintain (in which case it's going to suck to live there after the events of the last SG1 season)

yes that is silly too, but it was done for practical budgetary reasons (the people making the show often joke about it too)

almost the entire milky way and pegasus is essentially constituted of similar looking pine landscapes with either some Egyptian/Greek villages or medieval hamlets whose inhabitants happen to be speaking perfect standard english

however SGU has the ambition to deviate from this!!!

Like I said it's not a slippery slope for our societies. In a modern society that allows homosexual intercourse but not homosexual marriage/civil union, the people who are actually gay will simply not marry or enter a civil union, those that do aren't gay but bisexual (or just confused). In the past when homosexual intercourse was actually prohibited and heavily frowned upon by society in general and religion in particular these people actually did regularly marry the opposite sex just to shake off social and legal punishments, but fortunately those shackles are pretty much gone now in modern western societies. None of the younger generations of gay people I know would ever marry a woman just out of some past form of peer pressure. Short of forcing them to have intercourse with women society simply does not have these people in the heterosexual marriage pool any longer, whether gay marriage is permitted or not is wholly irrelevant for the calculation of the actual (voluntary) birth rate potential.

and by the way should you not be able to marry if you or your girlfriend was infertile or she had her tubes tied?

it is indeed silly, but to an extent it can be explained through "confirmation bias"... we only get to see the stories where interesting events unfold and all the planets that also have an iris/forcefield/highly secured location in place are presumable not very interesting because our adventurers would be stopped dead in their tracks...

they have featured secured locations btw, e.g. the asurans in SGA and the asgard, tollans, aschen in SG1 all protected their stargates

yeah there is quite some unnecessary drama and associated wussy elements in the show, but on the other hand if I was stuck on a spaceship millions of years from home with no apparant way to return I only hope that I would be able to screw like crazy too

how does gay marriage/civil unions "encourage" gay lifestyle? it is what it is... it's not like it's a slippery slope where 100% of your population is going to end up gay in the long run

if being gay is a free choice and a mistake, then sometimes it's more important that society tolerates such mistakes by individuals than forcing them to correct it.

yes but the whole point is why should gay people suppress their feelings? why not let them be "perfectly happy" in a homosexual lifestyle?

696

(100 replies, posted in Politics)

you make a big assumption that all people who are repressing their feelings are "perfectly happy"... would you be "perfectly happy" if you were an ugly mofo that couldn't get a woman to bed?

It is one of the sadest moments in the history of man that there were no dogs present during the MTV awards, or that they were trained too well.

Let us all join in a moment of silence.
