Stargate Universe b sgu

I didn't like it initially but watched it because it was the only new Stargate on. Once season 1 ended i went back and watched the episodes again and ended up liking them more.

It's still got the "omg we are all going to die, we have no idea what is what on this ancient ship, there's no hope. Oh wait, i press this button and everything is ok? We're good." style of writing to get them out of jams (which i hate... lazy writers).

Like on Stargate Atlantis, i think they've fast  tracked the humans knowledge and understanding of the ancient systems too quickly. The best part of Atlantis was the struggle to survive from the first season. If anything the SGU crew should be at a huge loss with only 1-2 people who can translate Ancient and even fewer technical people.

Probably the niftiest part of SGU are the communication stones and how they use them. Hoping season 2 gets progressively better like season one (for the most part)

Like in star trek where they're gonna die, and then somebody decides to redline the equipment in a totally dangerous stunt, and they program it from a console in 30 seconds

maybe they have a <tds> command to override all safety locks

Biggest problem that I have with the show is the sudden appearance of not only one but TWO planets that somehow was through and through loaded up with Naqahdriah. Which was an experimental mineral that was created solely on Langara. And how had those planets not exploded on their own accord long before the Icarus or Lucian Alliance bases were created. Kelowna nearly got turned into a crater only a year after a single vane of Naqahdah got transformed into Naqahdriah, so how can an entire planet be full of the stuff. That's my biggest gripe with the show, and it's a fairly huge one considering it's been the main plot device in the Series premiere and the season 1 finale.

yeah there is quite some unnecessary drama and associated wussy elements in the show, but on the other hand if I was stuck on a spaceship millions of years from home with no apparant way to return I only hope that I would be able to screw like crazy too

Hahaha, it really does. They have the worst practices of any station, including Fox and that's hard to beat. Just look what Fox did to Firefly, greatest show ever and it was cancelled half way through it's first season.

One thing about Stargate I don't get, is that humans on Earth seem to be the only ones sensible enough to put an instant interstellar gateway in a secured and guarded location.

All other gates are somewhere at random in a forest or a field, no matter if the planet is advanced or backward. Even when they know it's a gateway, noone seems to think it necessary to secure it one way or the other...

it is indeed silly, but to an extent it can be explained through "confirmation bias"... we only get to see the stories where interesting events unfold and all the planets that also have an iris/forcefield/highly secured location in place are presumable not very interesting because our adventurers would be stopped dead in their tracks...

they have featured secured locations btw, e.g. the asurans in SGA and the asgard, tollans, aschen in SG1 all protected their stargates

yes that is silly too, but it was done for practical budgetary reasons (the people making the show often joke about it too)

almost the entire milky way and pegasus is essentially constituted of similar looking pine landscapes with either some Egyptian/Greek villages or medieval hamlets whose inhabitants happen to be speaking perfect standard english

however SGU has the ambition to deviate from this!!!

Damn, my next post was going to be about the incongruity between the perfect english of all galactic denizens, and the with great difficulty translated exotic ancestrial inscriptions found near their settlements. smile

I also wonder how it is possible that a people can live next to a temple for millennia, but never actually bothered to do the effort of getting inside it and discover the piece of ancient technology lying conveniently on an altar five paces past the doorway, which can solve all the problems thay happen to be facing at the moment.
