the way you ask the questions I feel that you're seeking an answer either a or b

I want to actually answer the question rather than choose a or b

language confuses me sometimes cause using different words in place of others can sometimes lead to fits of rage in trying to puzzle out the exact question one is asking. Give me simple, I'll give you simple, give me complex, I'll give you a bloody nose and a painful shin.

Do you think that the normatives we generally agree on exist independently of custom and our motivations?

no, normatives cannot exist independently because if it did, then it wouldn't exist because ideals cannot exist without people to hold (on) to them. Air is independent, normatives are dependent. I'm sure animals don't give a damn about justice or logic. So they are out of the picture. That leaves us, unless plants can reason...oh, they can't? Are you sure? I think a venus fly trap tried talking to me yesterday! Although that was probably it trying to eat me...oh it wasn't? Ok. X(

normatives cannot exist independently. Stop trying to ask questions that are one sided. I doubt one can find a good argument that normatives (in the way you describe) can exist independently of a person.

one can argue that sociology answers this same question. In regards to studying how each society acts and does things. Now from the looks of things, either you're an idiot, or you're just trying to stir trouble. I'd have to pick the former, after reading a handful of posts from a handful of people here.

look on the brightside though, we're all idiots, just not all the time! big_smile

So far, in those prisons, it has been working out. Less people come back to prison and most actually better theirselfs.

As far as healthcare goes, I agree with those stupid reporters in the beginning: Europe is not a utopia when it comes to health care.
But it beats the American system big time.

if I'm not mistaken, the american system has the problem that "We are free to do what we want and because of that, I'm going to drink alcohol. If I don't get caught, I can keep doing it because it makes me look cool"

or the drug approach, "I can do drugs because it makes me feel good. No one knows I'm doing it unless someone rats me out"

as to the rest, they just kill for fun tongue

in either case, about 45% (assumption, I think it's a little less) of the people in the prison system right now are minor drug offenders or something that isn't major, like killing someone. Now the main concern here is that the law here dictates that (in my mind) if you break the law you should be punished. And then add in the mix guards who also hold the freedom act, "I'm a guard and these prisoners are under my control...under my control? I can do what I want to them and they can't do a thing about it!"

the main thing I think most americans forget is that beside the fact that most prisoners have wronged people in the past, they are still human beings that should be treated as such. If I were to break into The_Yell's house and kick his dog, beat his wife and shoot his kneecap, and run off with his panties, I'd be charged with a number of things, but that doesn't make me less human. Suppose I kill Elrohir, that doesn't make me less human. Slavery is what makes people less human.

I feel that the American Prison System is a system based on beating fear and pain into people so that they are so afraid they don't want to come back. Whereas I believe it should be a system of respect and attempting to help people out. Killers, yeah, they're screwed up, but minor drug offenders, come on people, you're gonna screw them over for life if you toss em in jail. There's no way they might be able to get a respectable job beyond working at wal-mart at 7.65 an hour tongue

that's who I thought...

whose josh?

I've known Aleph awhile, and we've had some conversations before. He has been known to delete under questionable circumstances

in his first round with me and Jacubus and GeneralSkulls in Andro awhile back, he was a pop banker attacking an enemy when one of our attackers took a handful of planets he wanted to take. And we assumed he got upset (no one knew the real reason) that someone took the planets. In fact, our attacker offered the planets TO Aleph after he took them and apologized for taking them. He deleted with his attacker about a day later. Aleph, that is.

as to the language, he's not very good at english. If I'm not mistaken, he's from South America (or at least a country that speaks spanish), so if you are fluent in spanish, you can get pretty far with him, his english does have some desiring to do, but then again, most americans have torn up the english language you can't understand half of what is said anymore smile

this is the base line right here humi...

age does not equal wisdom, simply more experience concerning mistakes that should have been learned in the past

as to superior intellect, 5 students in my graduating class were smarter than 3 of the 4 top math teachers in my high school, now tell me what is wrong with that? if 17 year olds can break a problem that a 48 year old who has studied the subject for years can't, can tell them off?  and the teachers can't tell them off? (they wouldn't our teachers were pretty awesome)

the idea that they should have enforced on you was the idea of respect for your teachers. They are the ones who make a living from teaching x amount students every year and suffering through all of our shit. Not to mention that if it weren't for them, you'd have to figure things out yourself without someone to assist you (unless your brother knows how to do trig equations and square roots in his head [mine does])

thing is, you have to know how to pick your fights. Sometimes its better to acquiese to the demands of the principal and teacher in order to fight for something better or more important, am I right? tongue if you fight about every little thing, then you will be kicked out and teacherless and knowledgeless (even though 90% of education can be found on the internet)
