I can see the appeal for longtime players, but having the old look as an option is way more expensive in terms of time spent than you might think. Time better spent improving important things.

Some sort of skin down the line, sure, but our priority currently is to grow the user base to avoid having the game die completely.

Fixed.

It took a while - around 13 years - but the game finally has a new look.

The basic idea behind the new layout is much the same as before. You still have a sidebar with all the relevant links in-game. The top bar with all the site-wide content is available in-game too.

As you can see, the plan is to move the ancient guide and other bits to the Wiki - this is however not done yet.

In-game, the map is slightly changed. The map sidebar replaces the normal game sidebar, and you can switch between them.

There is a specifically tailored interface for mobile users, where the sidebar is replaced with a menu.

The new design is still to some extent a work in progress. We believe it is fully functional though, and the kinks will be worked out in the coming days.

Go ahead have a look around. If you find something that isn't right, please contact a mod on IRC in the #mod channel, or send them a forum personal message.

Also, you can report bugs here: http://imperialconflict.com/forum/viewt … 9#p1672009

It has been a bit quiet on this front for a bit, but here are some updates:

* The galactic map now has a integrated attack section.
* The various popups have been removed in favor of inline dialogs.
* Transfer (and the new attack) have sliders as an option to manually entering the numbers of units to send.
* New planet pictures, courtesy of Primo.
* The system view now marks friendlies and enemies with colors. It also greys out unexplorable planets, and highlights explorable ones.

And possibly some other things that escape me currently.

If you were logged in while these changes happened, you may need to reload the map for it to function correctly.

You misunderstand the point of this completely. The game itself is not to be dumbed down for another audience. It is to be improved in appearance and ease-of-use so as to be in a playable state for new players. The core game is obviously good, having survived for so long with frankly very little love spent on it.

With such a good core game, it is a shame that new players instinctively think "eww, 1999 called and wants its game back" just by going by the apperance.

Is a larger player base good? Yes, unequivocally. It means more interest from me, devs, mods, and is the only way for the game to survive. Am I only interested in $$$? No. The game has very, very little impact on my economy. I am quite well off.

Ah true =P Well I still prefer the old look.

Well, you hu-mans like what you are used to.

To a new player though, Imperial Conflict looks laughable, the way hobby-made games did back in the early days of the web. It is a major turn-off that prevents the game from reaching any sort of audience besides old-timers and friends of old-timers. No amount of game changes will have any impact on this.

And with no player base the game is doomed to slowly wither away, the way it has for the last decade.

The game is also not ready for the new platforms that have emerged in the last few years - pads, and mobile.

Imperial Conflict has pretty much looked the same since 1999, with the new map being the exception. That needs to change if the game is to live to see another year.

We have some talented developers these days, and also Torqez, but developers and design typically do not mix well. So, we are looking for external talent.

What we need is someone willing to help design a new look for the game. Besides the glory and a VIP account, this is unpaid work.

If you think you have what it takes, send me a private message. Some sort of prior work that can be demonstrated is required.

The issue should now be resolved.

Your last used zoom level and location is supposed to be shown when opening the map. Works for me in both Firefox and Chrome. It does not work for you then? If so, in which browser and version?

Lies!

Actually, no doubt truth. Anyway, the idea with it was to get away from the - it seemed to me - silly way rounds ended with "NW jumps" in the last tick(s) being the one and only way to play. Score was intended to cumulatively measure your performance during a round, not just the final hours. Every tick, the formula Torqez posted is added to your score. The formula places higher importance at the end of a round, but still "counts" the whole round.

On the picture, you are in the process of creating a custom list, as you have clicked the "Create list" button. Click "Cancel" or "Save list" to automatically remove all your marked systems.

Yet another update:

* Scrolling by using keyboard - arrow keys and WASD.
* Scrolling by using buttons.
* Events option; for now, shows recent battles.
* Map now remembers opened system.
* Import system list function.
* Export to system list function.
* Various fixes, notably: reserved planets no longer count as unexplored; systems should not pop open after scrolling the map.
* The map is now a bit responsive to window size; sidebar and planet list shrinks on small windows. The standard game sidebar, Dilithium, also does this now, and should be a bit more enjoyable to play with on a small screen (ie, mobile devices).

Confirmed - will be fixed soon.

Game-wide mouseover popups similar to Wowhead's spell/item links, on family numbers and player names, that would show basic information about the family or the player, would be quite neat.

What resolution are you using? On my 1440x900 laptop I can see all planets.

Another update:

* The map now remembers most settings.
* Sending reinforcements is now integrated.
* Sending messages is now integrated. Note that copies are not saved to your outbox at this time.
* Simple mode added - shows stars as simple filled circles, with any shown lists more pronounced. This is more suitable for zoomed out views.
* The map sidebar is now collapsible. Click the border to collapse.

The automated password recovery page ("Forgot your login?") is now working. It can also used to set a new password using a new email address, assuming you have your original activation code.

Slight update again - there is now an integrated planet view in the new map. Note that not all the functions of the planet view are fully integrated yet, and will simply take you to the old standalone pages away from the map.

Note: in Internet Explorer, the new map will only work if you use the standard sidebar, Dilithium, for now. This has to do with IE requiring "strict" mode for the map to work, and only with Dilithium can this actually be enabled without enabling it on the whole game (Dilithium does not rely on frames, an ancient web technique, while all the others do).

Another little update:

* Internet Explorer (9 and up) is now supported.
* Mousewheel zoom now works in Firefox.

A small Christmas update:

* The galactic map can now show your fleets.
* Colors for your own and family lists are now saved persistently.
* The map is slightly less demanding.
* Mobile devices should now be redirected to the old plain map. The new map is not designed for these. Tablets are also redirected for now.
