"After we vote 'c' off alphabet island, my next vote is letter 's'.  It is way cooler to replace it with a z."
Apart from being much cooler, its also far less interesting to replace it, as we use Z for another sound.

Apart from Chinese, no big writing system survived that doesn't use an alphabet. The reason is simple. Its much easier to write a word correct when you know how it sounds, or to read a word you don't know correctly. Most Chinese Characters you have to learn, even if there is some system in it.

In short, an alphabet is good because you know how to write a word by its sounds. Everything else is useless extra work. If the Spanish can do it (they haven't got a single exception!), why can't we evolve?

on a more serious note

I agree with biggest part of the lists you guys made. The pro's are given so I add a few contra's.

Washington:
contra: The only contra I can find is that our info about the time could be largely incorrect.
So for now he's on nr1

Reagan:
Contra: what's in a word big_smile.
Nonetheless Reagan sure should be high in the list, 2 or 3.

Calvin Coolidge:
He was f.a.hayek years before the road to serfdom and the last president not to interfere to much in econ. He's on the list 2.

then it gets messy. So many candidates compete.

Maybe we should place one against the other to phrase Calvin Coolidge: "You loose".

or if Adolf would have "liberated" Moscow, With no opposition in the Mediterranean, a possible truce with starving Britain,  no aid for the USSR and Japan invading Russia. But I admit Belgium would be an easier target for a bomber of the time then Moscow in any case.

"Naw the war with Japan would still have set us to building the B-29 long range bomber and the atomic bomb, so if we hadn't landed in Normandy in the summer of 1944 we'd have dropped atomic bombs on Europe.  You probably wouldn't be here to speak anything"
Because hoover was very hawkish when it came to japs? The bomb was only developed after it became clear what side US would choose. Roosevelt supported it and it remains a question if funds would have been found if he did not.

As an important side note, it took a while to produce such a bomb. My grandparents were nowhere near a great city. How many would the US have produced till Germany had its own?

I blame FDR too for making people believe Keynes works but he included US in the second world war as opposed to hoover. Hoover was right about not taking Stalin as an ally tough and his econ was far better. But I would have spoken German by now or Russian.

That keeps him out of both list for me.

A  kid asked me what my fav top 5 would look like.

to my astonishment I found I had to many candidates I want to put into the list despite I dislike the last 3 strongly. Don't remember what I answered but the question has been bugging me since.

So you can put your fav top 5 here and defend your choice.

Thks to zeno, a new toppic. I agree with this 100%. It works the same in dutsh btw.

There's only gain by letting the letter C go. Or should I say see? We can take a few more homonyms.

We thought he would prefer no gov doing nothing over a gov doing nothing. It doesn't matter anyway if you loose money to a gov or a high borrowing rate why work?
