Topic: My Political Stances on some topics

I am a politician in fact and in action.

I have been asked where I stand with regards to promoting alternative energy, animal bathroom runoff, and containment of such runoff.

First let me express I HATE subsidies. They are never fairly applied, with politicians choosing who gets what and what items are subsidized.

They are either used to pay someone off, to make an activist minority 'happy' or to make them feel 'good inside'. In other words to pay them off or make it look like you care and that you have helped that minority.

Subsidies are not fair, they hide the true costs of products or services which promotes waste, they cost all of society for the benefit of the few and should be the one thing Socialists, Liberals, Libertarians, Conservatists, and Constitutionalists should hate universally, if only for different reasons.

Politicians, who are in my mind are corrupt, who pass subsidies are vote buying, and again in my opinion... should be prosecuted for doing so.

Now to say I am against research is wrong. I am a results based reward type scientist.

If a nation determines something is important to do, such as producing better solar, then instead of throwing endless money at select companies... I endorse making rewards for meeting certain criteria, to be split amongst any winners. This is the DARPA model (and the X Prize model) which has successfully brough about a lot of new research on nationally important goals.

Promising rewards for breakthroughs allows EVERYONE to compete, not just the companies that donate to a specific party. Additionally the goal posts in a very large project can be moved as needed.

I would never buy new power production either. Either it can compete on it's own or it cannot.

As for animal runoff... a farm near me when I was growing up used their cow detrius to fertalize their corn, which was fed to the cows (milk cows).

As far as I am concerned it is a semi-valuable product that due to stigma is not being marketed fully. I prefer market based solutions to use it and I think such things are happening more and more. Let it grow on it's own accord so as to not cost us the taxpayer for something the market can correct.

Well I like women (proof of age 18 on file) in Catholic school uniforms with pigtails, preferably brunette.

I like poptarts, and believe that we should have poptart subsidized spending for politicians.  That way I can pay you in poptarts instead of cash.

And I like halibut, but for some damn reason no one can decide should we fish in Alaskan waters, or not fish in Alaskan waters...

Otherwise I say fire every last politician and give the voice back to the people.  Someone who hasn't been in congress for the last 60 years of their misbegotten little lives.  I mean....geeze a 90 year old geezer is still in congress since his 30's?  Apparently senility is not a good thing for our country.

Well, thanks for shit-canning the "Democrats and Republicans can achieve their individual goals by working together instead of focusing on differences" theory, Flint.  X(

If you want, I'll get into the specifics of the issues when I have time.

Re: My Political Stances on some topics

Note on the background of this thread:
I was arguing in the Global Warming thread that if people focused at the solution-level, rather than the cause-level, solutions to global warming could be achieved, and could be justified by issues completely outside the question of global warming, achieving the Democratic ends without relying on the divisive portion of the debate.

In order to prove this, I asked Flint whether he would be in favor of a couple policies, including subsidizing alternative energies and subsidizing the use of agricultural and human waste runoff collection and storage.

Okay, let's go one by one

Energy: You noted that you're fine with an X-Prize type model, yes?  So this portion of the debate is pretty much closed, an X-prize type program for efficient energy development would achieve the goals intended.

That leaves only agricultural runoff.

Now you noted that one ranch was using runoff to help grow their crops.  There's some problems with this in normal farming operations:
1: Normally, modern ranches don't grow their own crops.
2: Cattle that are treated with high levels of antibiotics still have the chemicals in their manure, and have been reported to carry infectious diseases, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria strains and viruses such as H1N1 and H5N1 flu strains.  Without proper processing (such as through the technologies mentioned above), using this manure for agriculture is HIGHLY dangerous...
3: That method still leaves the methane in the manure to escape.

Re: My Political Stances on some topics

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican." "I am,"replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Democrat." "I am,"replied the balloonist. "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met but, somehow, now it's my fault."

Re: My Political Stances on some topics

Zarf you presume that I worry about methane or CO2.

On the contrary I do not.

Buffalo herds once outnumbered all current livestock. Add in wild elk, bears, and such...

A man of history and science would not be afraid.

Actually if I was standing behind you, i'd be worried about your methane.

Re: My Political Stances on some topics

You assume the only thing to worry about with methane is environmental issues.

Methane emissions from farms greatly reduce surrounding land values, because... well, you wouldn't want to live in a home that perpetually smelt like shit.  In many cases in the Midwest, especially where farms use the current disposal method of putting all waste in large pools, the odor can actually last for one or two miles beyond the source point... that's pretty damn bad!

In addition, educational studies have indicated that people living near regions with high methane emissions, such as cattle farms, tend to score much lower on standardized testing scores... in large part because the environment is just damn distracting...

The #1 issue isn't just the number of cattle in the world.  The primary issue is that there are so many cattle in such a small region.  Within their environment, cattle represent a highly invasive species, regardless of their economic benefits.  While I'm not saying cattle ranching should be eliminated, technology can reduce its impact on environmental and economic interests.

In addition, you haven't answered arguments 1 and 2 from the last post.

Re: My Political Stances on some topics

obviously he doesn't.  I've lived in the country enough times to know that even from a small farm it will drift for more than a mile.

Re: My Political Stances on some topics

For two to three years I grew up in a true rural region.

A strawberry farm on our south,  the cow's to our southwest, the manure fertilized corn from west to Northwest, sheep to the north,  our own acre of vegetables, and three acres of corn to the east (then 2 mansions before more farms).

I ---KNOW---- the scents of farms and animals.

The odors might distract a city boy, but someone used to it has no issues with it.

As for the lower test scores... are not the one saying something about causes and correlations?

Re: My Political Stances on some topics

Flint, still doesn't stop the fact that less people will want to live in these areas mostly for the fact it is a farm next door... thus Zarf's city slicker point is still valid...

So, I don't want to live next to the scents produced by farms. In reply, you imply I should just get used to it. My reply is "F U"
