Topic: Internet piracy

Wow the different efforts of different nations is getting most interesting

England is using a 3 strikes rule, then no internet ever

Sweden is using criminal law and putting Pirate Bay founder in jail as well as fining him millions

The United States slaps on $30,000 per a song fines to a person for hosting Torrents

Other nations are moving forward with strong anti-piracy languages.

I think the sleeping beast is awakening, and the pendulum is swinging hard the other way now... It will be painful for the hacking kiddies who think they can 'try a game to see if it is fun, then discard it if not'... but also share with anyone else who wants to 'try the game for 6 months'. I think also those who think artists make to much money are going to have to put up, or shut up... and totally not listen to the artists they think are taking to much money, or pay cash for that single song they want. I-Tunes anyone?

I guess I am saying, for Torrent Toddlers 'May you live in interesting times'

Re: Internet piracy

There's room for 3 debates here really:
- The intellectual property / theft debate
- punishing the end user or the torrent hoster instead of coming down on the ISPs or the single cracker
- Tech race between underground and business

The internet medium they can't control anymore. They can only make some attempts in keeping it from becoming as mainstream as VHS tapes.
The root problem is that on one side you have the bright hacking kiddies with too much free time who see the hack as a challenge. They will win it from the game designers security protocols whose game is being rushed out, and the 9 to 5 'expert' civil servant in the government IT department who is asked 'expert' advice on dealing with this for will be out of depth and ask the cheapest consultant who will bring standard crap.

Re: Internet piracy

we should pass laws that give them 150 years in prison

then arrest them and rendition them to some country like Singapore

and say "OK walk through that door, you enter federal prison tonight and you're there 30 years...or...here is the photograph of a kid like you...the most l337 hax0r on earth...well, prove it! take him out for us, and we'll wipe the slate clean"

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: Internet piracy

No!  Imprison them for a period equal to the life of the author +70 years.  tongue

Re: Internet piracy

Oh now that is bad Zarf, lol!

The problem is going to get worse in general however, unless the communities can make ways to stop the kiddies

Public caning does wonders for kids over in Thailand.

=^o.o^= When I'm cute I can be cute.  And when I'm mean, I can be very very mean.  I'm a cat.  Expect me to be fickle.

Re: Internet piracy

I have heard that.

Used to be our stocks (not the cash type btw) were great for that also.

Public Humilation and pain go a long way to correcting issues.

To bad it is considered 'not politically correct'

Re: Internet piracy

Anyone who seriously believes this will actually put a dent in "piracy" raise your hand.

Re: Internet piracy

Considering they have reduced the amount in England already... *raises hand*

And yet the numbers are still growing.

Re: Internet piracy

Yes in other nations, but the policies are cracking down harder than what most would call a good idea.

Like the security things they put on computer games for PC. Initially it was not to much, a key to make sure you bought your game. Then a CD checker, then other checks, and eventually it got to Masters of Orion III level where the security took as much performance requirements (for me) as did the game..

And the initial success of England is tempting many other nations to join suit. The money Sweden will get (if they keep on their route) will also convince many nations to follow suit.

The pendulum swings. Where will it stop?

Re: Internet piracy

Peter Sunde (alias brokep), the co-founder of the troubled torrent giant The Pirate Bay, is a divisive figure in the tech community.  Worldwide he has been found guilty of multiple criminal charges for giving people the ability to find torrents, both illegal and legal.

Sunde is currently facing a one year prison sentence in his native Sweden and millions in fines for "assisting [others in] copyright infringement".

Yes the piratebay is being hosted elsewhere, but this is the point. Millions in fines, and a year in prison.

Re: Internet piracy

the 3 strikes rule is populism and in very controversial debate in the european union. nations like britain and france implemented it, because the governments there face(d) elections. the french elections just resulted in a major setback for the ruling conservatives. Gordon Brown won't survive the elections in summer. The german government stated, that the 3 strike rule is no proper way to handle e-piracy and is a serious danger for human rights. So germany will oppose all european efforts for a european 3 strike rule, until the eurpean courts juged over the french and british laws.
