Topic: 1755 Lisbon Earthquake

It occurred on an important Catholic holiday, November 1, 1755 at 9:40 am. It killed people attending mass, and while the burning was extensive, the city's major churches were destroyed. Of the 200,000 people living near Lisbon, between 60,000 and 100,000 were killed. On the other hand, the people at the whore houses up in the hills all survived.

...

Now why would God exterminate the faithful and yet allow the sinners to escape death?

Re: 1755 Lisbon Earthquake

God wanted his faithful to be close to him and ascended them to heaven and the sinners to find solitude in their amongst things that will constantly torture themselves with unfounded lust on Earth.

Re: 1755 Lisbon Earthquake

I don't believe in God, and I think there are many good reasons for not doing so. However, I think it is common knowledge that bad things happen to good people, while good things happen to bad people, listing any such instance is a bit pointless because everybody knows it is true. If it was not true, then everybody would know that God existed. Now, I firmly believe God does not exist, or at least not the way that Christians believe, but I was raised a Catholic and I know that the whole point in faith in God is that it is without proof or need of proof. So if no bad things happened to worshippers while no good things happened to Godless people then surely that would defeat the object of faith, being a strong evidence for God. You also have to remember that God as the Christian faith would have him/her/it is a much greater being than you or me and it would be a bit silly of us to try to fathom his mind.

A main problem I have with Christianity is the number of references to humility and the need to be humble. It just always seemed a bit silly listening to those lines while sat in a big ass intricatly masoned church while supposedly worshipping God. I know I said we shouldn't try to fathom the mind of God, but it seems totally ridiculous to preach humility while demanding to be worshipped. I wouldn't especially mind worshipping a God who created heaven and Earth, because I reckon that's a pretty cool thing to do and I'd like to pass on my kudos, but asking to be worshipped just makes God an arse hole. I'd rather give him a two fingered salute and tell him to get over himself.

Re: 1755 Lisbon Earthquake

You know what's fun about the whole thing... there was a major earthquake which caused alot of fires throughout the city. Confused and trying to escape the fires, alot of people fled to the river line for some security. Some minutes later, a major tidal wave appeared out of nowhere and cleaned house on all those suckers.

Re: 1755 Lisbon Earthquake

Should point out in 2008 that nobody in Lisbon 1755 did in fact escape death

Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

"Now why would God exterminate the faithful and yet allow the sinners to escape death?"

What did he had to do with it then?

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Maybe He decided those people passed and so sent them to heaven?

"Please show me where god says that in the bible"

What makes the bible the place where god says anything?
Are you saying all the non Chistians are idiots for believing in the wrong god?
