"User groups"
"User group promissions"
PunBB has this
"Custom promissions"
Not sure what this means
"Ability to split threads"
http://www.punres.org/desc.php?pid=187
Although I'll admit that's a decent feature which PunBB 1.2 lacks out of the box
"Posting as a sticky or announcment rather than posting and then setting"
Fair enough, although that's easy enough to add and one could argue how important such a feature really is
"Mod post approvel on forums"
Woah. How exactly does that fit with IC?
"Sub forums"
http://www.punres.org/desc.php?pid=105
Again, this is a feature PunBB lacks because of its attempts to remain lightweight
"Auto post read tracking, PunBB dosen't seem to realise when I've read a post. How can I track whats new when it keeps telling me everything is new."
http://www.punres.org/desc.php?pid=46
I'll admit that's a decent feature which PunBB 1.2 lacks out of the box
Personal opinion here: the ability to split threads (which IC has never supported), have sub forums (which IC has never supported), and have better unread tracking doesn't seem to justify switching forum software, writing a new style, converting topics/posts, writing new integration code, etc. You also haven't addressed the features IC doesn't use, like attachments, friend/foe lists, and private messaging.
I'm not dismissing phpBB because of some bias toward PunBB; I'm saying that switching forum software isn't a decision that should be made lightly. If there are issues with PunBB, the first decision shouldn't be "switch to phpBB": it should be to evaluate all of the possible options and choose the best one.
