I will agree that there is alot that isn't needed but from what I've seen of the PunBB code its very linner and has had much though put into future development so making these things possible is going to take almost as much work as working on IC.

There are mods for this, but it's useless to put in the core since hardly anyone uses it and it just pisses users off.

1.3 and 1.4 have this. 1.2's system makes sense too, just needs a little bit of getting used to, and is a lot simpler.

Most of these things can be 'solved' by upgrading to 1.4 in the near future, when it's released.

I just don't see why you would even attempt to integrate phpBB or vBulletin with anything. Those monsters usually gobble everything up, not the other way around.
FluxBB/PunBB is quite perfectly suited for IC, as it doesn't have lots of unnecessary features that'll only slow down a server already crying under a badly written game. I'm sure there are alternatives, but I don't see phpBB and certainly not vBulletin as a viable replacement for the job.

I'd still like to know what you mean by 'custom permissions' though

Can post BBCode in private messages            
Can remove private messages from own folder

You are not restricted to, you are a user, you are a mod, you are an admin. So I would class that as custom permissions

But who could expect that after nearly 10 years of IC, more or less 6 years of relative inactiveness and over a year of this poorly integrated forum Stefan would get a new, active and eager developper in?
