Topic: Trinitarianism is BS

I am talking about the Christian concept of the trinity. It's bs. Of course, I recognize that there are Christian traditions that do not believe in the trinity, and some were very respectable traditions during the early founding of the religion.

But, I am going to argue that the Trinitarian view makes no sense. To say that Jesus is God but is also the son of God (independent of the identity of God) is speaking nonsense. That's saying A = B and A = not-B. It violates simple rules of Logic, such as the Law of Non-contradiction. Now while you could argue that we just can't grasp the concept of the trinity, that's basically a lame cop-out for an obvious logical problem.

Now convert to Nontrinitarianism!

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

You're debating the logic of religion?

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

I'm debating the logic of Trinitarianism, which is a doctrine of a religion. It's not religion as a whole though.

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

And therein lies the rub.

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

It's sort of like Jesus has power of attorney for god.

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

"independent of the identity of God"

i dont think many religions believe that.

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

Hmmm, this seems like a rather useless debate imo. Logic and religion don't mix together.

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

The belief is that Jesus was both fully God and fully human. It's not that hard to conceptualize. Obviously too hard for you. tongue

>>That's saying A = B and A = not-B<< It doesn't claim that Jesus was both god and not god or both human and not human.

The Trinity concept is interesting because it's more a matter of coincidence than necessity. Essentially it's just saying that God is present in these different things (which are all God anyway).

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

well that about wraps it up for god

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

The early Catholic church debated about whether Jesus was God or the highest created human (Son of God).

Long story short they were pretty much split and it's one of those things that everybody still debates.

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

Nobody debates it. Perhaps non-Catholics, but they don't count anyway.

Re: Trinitarianism is BS

To clarify something I earlier thought Otto had gotten right:

There was debate in the early Church concerning Jesus's divinity and exact relation to God, as Otto said. There is not still debate on this issue within the Church, however, nor was everyone "pretty much split." The Council of Nicaea (325 AD) put this issue to rest early in the Church's history.

"The Arian heresy taught that Christ was not indeed divine, but rather was the highest and most perfect of all of God the Father's creatures. This heresy, however, which had become prominent even among bishops, by the early 320's, contradicted the constant Christological teachings of the Church up to that point."
