Topic: Violence in Video Games

Subtitle: Insert facepalm here.

There's no big banner on these games warning parents about their violent content.
Actually, on every game there is a badge showing an age rating, and if it has an M...
*interrupts* But there's no warning saying that kids shouldn't be playing these games!

Re: Violence in Video Games

isnt when a game is starting allways something like this:

http://www.krradio.com/images/parental_advisory.gif

this one now is for music but i remember that black/white screen saying something about this game contains bla violence and such.

still the whole discussion is big bullshit.. why blame games while not blaming movies like saw which are nothing but a hype of extreme violence.

Re: Violence in Video Games

Game ratings are rediculous. I cant even get a commerical game with a bit of nudity or sex it it, or drug use, or ...
Yet i can watch it on Blu-Ray highdef TV? Shit, some of the MA15+ movies are filled with violence and sex...That doesn't even include the R18+ ones...

Re: Violence in Video Games

parents buy games for their kids because they don't care what they get for their kids. My brother used to buy teen and matured rated games and I used to play them (I'm not  violent person though).

most parents are smart in that they keep an eye out for what they want their children to have. i'm not going to buy my 7 year old son F.E.A.R. unless he's a child prodigy in physics or chemistry. likewise I'm not going to buy my 15 year old son Animal Crossing (or w/e that game was called). it also depends on what the child likes, if they can't handle violence or blood, then odds are they won't get those games. I can't handle violence or blood, but I play CoD4, halo, etc. So I'm the odd ball out tongue

Re: Violence in Video Games

I've met some kids in my lifetime that definitely needed to stay away from violent games. I remember when wwf used to be big and everybody was into stone cold steve austin, triple H and the rock. Whew. The blood and bruises I've watched as a result lol

Sex without the e is still SX!

Re: Violence in Video Games

We have a name for parents who blame violent video games for their children's behavior: bad parents.

Re: Violence in Video Games

I used to enjoy very competitive combat games with great graphics and massive team strategy. Sure I enjoyed blowing multiple players into pieces with a mortar cannon. I did it while giving cover for teammates to capture the enemy flag and demolish the enemy team's assets. It's was a thrilling challenge coupled with awesome graphics and great community.

It was a cooperative and competitive game composed of great physics and graphics. It didn't make me violent when I saw a movie or hung out with friends later. The problem is not games. It never was and never will be, no matter how violent any of them get. The violent dysfunctional children are obviously drawn more to the more violent games when making their selection. The games don't cause it.

This is just a distraction from the problem. It's much easier and gathers more support to blame every violent dysfunctional child's problems on a video game than to address the real problems. It's a bad PR move. And buying into it only ignores the real problems and encourages the worsening status quo, making them worse.

To put it bluntly, not only is it wrong, it's irresponsible.

Re: Violence in Video Games

Pretty much what KWF said, it's not the games that are the problem, it's the retards that play the games and in a few cases, the parents too.

Lol. In the case of the recent anti left-lane camping laws, that's very true. But on the other hand, camping in the left lane is stupid.

Not understanding what a passing lane is is a crime by no means limited to seniors. People your age are too dumb to use it correctly too! I bet half of this forum is guilty! No, wait... my guess is half of this forum is too young to drive. tongue

Re: Violence in Video Games

Ok got 3 minutes into that and can't take it anymore.  If a child becomes addicted to video games there are two parties at fault, the child and the parents.  Growing up I loved playing Sonic the Hedgehog and played it as often as I could even fighting with my brother and sister over who's turn it was.  However never were we allowed to play for more than two hours before my parents came in, turned off the TV and the system and said, "Alright you're done go outside or grab a book."  And we did because my parents, like any good parent, were willing to discipline us if we didn't do what we were told.  For anyone reading this sending a child to their room for a time out is not discipline, sending them to stand in a corner is.  The reason is simple a child's room, unless children have changed drastically in 10 years, is where they keep their best toys.  Now I admit with games becoming more realistic and graphic there is a tendency to let the lines between reality and fantasy blur, that is the fault of the player, not the game.  I had an active imagination growing up and I still do but not once did I ever confuse what was real with what was not, and I wasn't taught that I wasn't told, "Ok son I know you like blowing things up in Duke Nukem 3D but you need to understand that that isn't real." I figured it out on my own.

As for violent video games, music, movies, etc. making violent people, no.  Flat out no.  Violent media does not make violent people, violent people buy violent media.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Every time I get hypnotized (I don't think I've been hypnotized in more than half a decade, even pop banking bwahaha) I retaliate by killing 30% of the people at my local [no need to be specific, this kind of psychosis is disturbing]!

I love violent video games...the more violent, the better. *Pop* goes someones head when you shoot it.
Then again, i also like playing non-violent video games: Such as theme hospital and the sims.

Oh, and im essentially a pacifist.

Re: Violence in Video Games

of course, the sims creeps me out. I just remember how into it boring people I knew got. I couldn't figure how boring people could get so into a game where they watch boring simulated characters do boring things... I guess they embrace the boring.
