The trees he headed to where large and offered a lot of cover. When he reached the dark clump he looked up the mountain side which just seemed to stretch on forever. The mountain was littered with small outposts and with one look at the mountain, he saw only one way up and it wasn't going to be easy.
It was straight through the middle, he could see a line of sorts right up the mountainside that if he kept low to the ground and if the light stayed dim he could make it to the top. He took a deep breath and took a step forward, only to hear a siren sound furthur up the hill. He swore and ran on.
Every spotlight was turned to his location, but he was already gone before anything could know where he was. He was running for his life up the middle of the outposts, thankful his enemy was wasting time by going to the bottom of the hill where he was first spotted. Just as the thought crossed his mind, the lights all turned and focused on him. Instantly he dropped to the ground as he heard the turret cannons fire.
Two massive explosions rocked the ground next to him as he launched to his feet. He puller up next to a dead tree ahead, and readied the rifle. He took aim at where he heard the first cannon fire from and saw the emplacement. He took half a second to recognize what turret it was and he fired two quick shots at the targeting cameras. He didn't wait for the shower of sparks before he rushed to the next tree up ahead.
Slamming against the tree on the opposite side of his body he took aim once more at the second turret, and fired another two shots. He quickly scanned the area ahead of him before running suddenly forward.
He heard cannons from behind him, and he stepped to the left, swung to the ground on his back and aimed at the enemy below. There were three of the moving platforms slowly making their way up the hill each supported by three smaller figures. He took notice of the position of each enemy, then fired at the nearest unit felling two guards with six shots before he was forced to move to dodge the shots back at him.
He rolled on his stomach thankful for doing so as bullets peppered where he had just lain. He did not stop and kept rolling and bullets followed him. He pulled a grenade from his pocket and on the third roll he pushed forward and threw the grenade after getting to his feet. The grenade sailed through the air, almost invisible, but he ran on with out looking at what was happening behind him.
Fire was being rained down from everywhere onto his position, and with one quick look, he noticed he wasn't going to make it.
He concentrated, while sidestepping a cannon blast which tore out a tree from its roots, and then he felt through his body as adrenalaine began pumping through his body. It mixed with his blood and instantly he felt stronger and faster. He took a deep breath and as the grenade he had thrown exploded, he pulled the second rifle from his back and with a rifle in each hand, he sprinted up the hill.
In an instant he looked around and saw where every enemy was. Ahead of him, at the two nearest outposts, there were six platform enemies moving closer, all flanked by three guards. Behind him, the platform had been destroyed as was the remaining guard, and the two platforms were still moving forward. To his upper right, at a furthur outpost, he saw another three platforms.
He quickly ran forward as more bullets came flying past. He dived to the ground, and crawled furiously forward, trying to avoid the cannon fire. It suddenly became more erratic and random, meaning his plan had worked and they had lost sight of him. He felt a blast just next to him which prompted him to crawl faster. He heard the slow mechanical thumps far behind him and he knew he was getting away.
Then I lived.
