Topic: Space: The Escape of the Fifth Colony

The ground rocked with the explosions from overhead as the battle above ground raged on. The lights flickered in the underground passage and a trickle of dust from the ceiling showed that the bombs were starting to break through. As the lights settled back to their soft yellow glow a man ran through the passage. There was a pause in the explosions indicating the bombers were coming around for another pass.
The man kept running in a straight line ignoring all the doors and side passages that led off in other directions. The ground began to tremble again as the man approached a solid steel door. He grapsed the handle and typed in a code on the touch pad then opened the door. He stepped through and shut the door, bolting it closed.
He turned and walked to the closest computer screen he could see. He typed in the same code just as the ground shook so much that he was knocked to the ground. He heard many smashes ahead of him and when he looked up he saw that only the screen he was at was still on its table. He wiped of the dust and dirt that had fallen from the roof from the keyboard and began to type furiously. Detailed analysis' of the onder ground complex popped up. When he had found what he was looking for he pulled a pistol from his side holster and shot the screen and the hardrive.
He turned around and opened the steel door running back down the passage, not bothering to lock the door. More explosions sounded, much closer then before and all the lights abruptly went out. A second passed and the man did not break stride and the reserve lighting came on. Green light flooded the passage way. Gunshots could faintly be heard now, and still the man kept running.

Then I lived.

Re: Space: The Escape of the Fifth Colony

The passage way kept on going and the man slowed down to a brisk walk, panting heavily. Behind him the lights had been going out and as he walked the lights ahead went out. He was left in complete darkness, groping his way forward
His hand came upon a door handle. He grasped it after realizing what it was, turned the handle and pushed the door open. Silently he closed the door and leant back first against the door.
He breathed in deeply and slid down to a crouching position. He blindly grabbed the pistol in his hand and counted the bullets left. Seven bullets left in the clip and two clips spare. Twenty seven left.
Knowing where he had to go he stood back up and holstered his pistol. He opened the door and stepped outside. Taking a second to remember which way he had to go he set off. It was completely dark but he knew that the passage was straight for the entire complex. He walked on and on not knowing when the passage would end. The bombing had ceased suddenly and any sound of the battle couldn't be heard.
The silence felt unnatural as did the darkness. Still he walked on. His purpose meant any personal suffering was irrelevent. The silence hung in the air and he swore he heard other footsteps then his own. He knew he must be close so he broke into a run, only to smash head first into a solid door.
He fell to the ground clutching his head trying to see through the pain. He had made it. He stood up staggering slightly and opened the door. There were emergency lights and they were working. He walked in an closed the door. He bolted it shut and and turned to look at what he could pile up against the door.
He was standing in the complex's armoury and piled against the walls were racks and racks of weapons and in the middle of the room was a large table holding even more weapons and ammunition crates. Just behind a large crate, He noticed a computer console. Moving the crate to the front on the door, he turned the computer on. When it had loaded up, he went through the base's security logs.
All of the generators and the backup's were destroyed apart from this room which was seperated from the rest of the base. Almost every section of the complex had been breached. From what he could tell the intruders were all surging to his location.
He turned the computer off and come to a conclusion. He looked around and saw the guns all around him. Hanging on the wall was a vest. He took it off the wall and put it on. He picked a rifle and looked at it closely. It was one of the newer designs. It could fire twenty bullets before he had to reload and there were two back up chambers that were used after the main one was empty. They were pushed up by a small lever on the left hand side of the barrel. He slung the rifle on his back and picked up another one making sure that they both were completly full. He picked up six clips and put them in the ammo pockets of his vest.
He walked to the other side of the table and picked up a pistol. It was the same as the one he already had but he holstered it anyway after checking that it was full. He picked up five clips and also put them in his pockets. He saw at the edge of the table a crate full of grenades. He smiled a little as he picked up four and placed them in their respective pockets. He saw a small travel style backpack. He filled it with eight clips for his rifles as well as with some water and some rations. He put the backpack on over the other rifle and placed a water container by his left side.
He turned to exit when he saw a crate of C4 explosive. He thought for a second and then pulled all of the explosive out of the crate and began sticking it all around the room. He put a granade next to each one after removing the safety pin. He picked up the remote detonater and opened the door, after moving the crate away. He closed the door and headed to the next left passage.

Then I lived.

Re: Space: The Escape of the Fifth Colony

With the rifle in his right hand, he groped towards the passage he knew would lead out of the base. Not long after, he suddenly felt empty air and knew he was there. The passage was just as dark, but he walked down it anyway. It was eerily silent and deserted given that he knew intruders were everywhere. When he started passing closed doors he knew he was close.
Suddenly he heard movement ahead. Instinctivly, he opened the nearest door to his right as quite as he could and quickly shut it. Through the glass pane, he saw the passage flooded with light. The light came from a single source, much light a torch but more powerful. The figure that was holding it was moving forward.
The figure was completly mechanical. It moved forward on four 'legs' which supported a heavily armoured chassis. At the top of the chassis were two arms holding a cannon each. At the front were another two arms, shorter then the ones on top and both were holding a torch. Between both sets of arms a 'head' sat which housed the visual componants.
He pushed back against the door, not wanting to be seen. The light slowly faded from view as well as the sound of the heavy thump from the metallic legs. He waited there for a few minutes before opening the door. He looked down the passage and could only see a faint light slowly getting smaller. He turned and ran down the opposite way.
He could feel moving air up ahead, he knew he would be outside soon enough. There were no doors now, so it was unnerving to be moving through the passage without some cover. Up ahead, he heard movement and a blinding light. He jumped to the left and crouched levelling the rifle. He took aim and waited for what ever was coming.
No sounds come, so he slowly crept forward keeping the gun level. He edged closer to the door way, and was thankful as nothing was there. He spotted a faint light from ahead and rose to his feet. He ran to the exit and was glad when nothing stopped him. The light outside was from the two full moons in the middle of the night sky. He stepped out side and breathed the fresh air.
Suddenly a loud humming came closer and he crouched to the ground with the rifle ready and waiting for whatever was coming. He looked up and saw a massive transport ship fly over head towards where he knew the spaceport was. He grimaced as he thought about it.
After the ship left he stood and took in the path that was before him. In his way were a vast mountain range with the spaceport directly on the top. Looking around for any hostiles, and after spotting a patrol to the far left of his current postion, he slung the rifle over his shoulder, took a swig from the canteen of water by his side and set off to the nearest clump of trees.

Then I lived.

Re: Space: The Escape of the Fifth Colony

The trees he headed to where large and offered a lot of cover. When he reached the dark clump he looked up the mountain side which just seemed to stretch on forever. The mountain was littered with small outposts and with one look at the mountain, he saw only one way up and it wasn't going to be easy.
It was straight through the middle, he could see a line of sorts right up the mountainside that if he kept low to the ground and if the light stayed dim he could make it to the top. He took a deep breath and took a step forward, only to hear a siren sound furthur up the hill. He swore and ran on.
Every spotlight was turned to his location, but he was already gone before anything could know where he was. He was running for his life up the middle of the outposts, thankful his enemy was wasting time by going to the bottom of the hill where he was first spotted. Just as the thought crossed his mind, the lights all turned and focused on him. Instantly he dropped to the ground as he heard the turret cannons fire.
Two massive explosions rocked the ground next to him as he launched to his feet. He puller up next to a dead tree ahead, and readied the rifle. He took aim at where he heard the first cannon fire from and saw the emplacement. He took half a second to recognize what turret it was and he fired two quick shots at the targeting cameras. He didn't wait for the shower of sparks before he rushed to the next tree up ahead.
Slamming against the tree on the opposite side of his body he took aim once more at the second turret, and fired another two shots. He quickly scanned the area ahead of him before running suddenly forward.
He heard cannons from behind him, and he stepped to the left, swung to the ground on his back and aimed at the enemy below. There were three of the moving platforms slowly making their way up the hill each supported by three smaller figures. He took notice of the position of each enemy, then fired at the nearest unit felling two guards with six shots before he was forced to move to dodge the shots back at him.
He rolled on his stomach thankful for doing so as bullets peppered where he had just lain. He did not stop and kept rolling and bullets followed him. He pulled a grenade from his pocket and on the third roll he pushed forward and threw the grenade after getting to his feet. The grenade sailed through the air, almost invisible, but he ran on with out looking at what was happening behind him.
Fire was being rained down from everywhere onto his position, and with one quick look, he noticed he wasn't going to make it.
He concentrated, while sidestepping a cannon blast which tore out a tree from its roots, and then he felt through his body as adrenalaine began pumping through his body. It mixed with his blood and instantly he felt stronger and faster. He took a deep breath and as the grenade he had thrown exploded, he pulled the second rifle from his back and with a rifle in each hand, he sprinted up the hill.
In an instant he looked around and saw where every enemy was. Ahead of him, at the two nearest outposts, there were six platform enemies moving closer, all flanked by three guards. Behind him, the platform had been destroyed as was the remaining guard, and the two platforms were still moving forward. To his upper right, at a furthur outpost, he saw another three platforms.
He quickly ran forward as more bullets came flying past. He dived to the ground, and crawled furiously forward, trying to avoid the cannon fire. It suddenly became more erratic and random, meaning his plan had worked and they had lost sight of him. He felt a blast just next to him which prompted him to crawl faster. He heard the slow mechanical thumps far behind him and he knew he was getting away.

Then I lived.
