Thats a good point.

Re: What the flush am I working for?

"One thing that is not being mentioned in the media is the worrying accuracy of these attacks. Does anyone here actually think that this was an accidental discovery? Or that this ship was worth a lot, and it's cargo worth $100m USD? Highly unlikely. They were even operating outside their normal area of attacks ffs. These pirates are very modern, very well equipt, and knowledgeable. They know which ships are going to get them big pay days. The seizure of a Ukrainian ship carrying military hardware, and a huge oil tanker within, what, a month of each other? Again, they know what ships are carrying valuable cargo, and they know when/ where to hit them."

this could also simply be an indication of the size of the problem; these are ships that made the news because they are so special; but there are many more ships hijacked that don't; these pirates are quite professional in surprising ways (like listening in on transmissions and having material to detect conterfeit currency and stuff) tho so who knows

Re: What the flush am I working for?

The Media likes to report big things

The pirates have taken a couple of hundred ships in the last year

Re: What the flush am I working for?

One of those articles allege they use GPS as well as hiding their pirate boats inside/alongside fishing trawlers tongue. Sounds to me like they are getting smarter.

Outside influence? Criminal evolution? Or is the individual criminal just working harder to make sure he/she gets what they deserve.

"Mothership"

Hehehe... Like Han said, the media likes report big things, and in this case, I think, over state things. I think this is the first time I've ever heard the term "Mothership" used outside a sci-fi movie/ show. Much less in a news report...

The main reason the marine was invented was to protect the merchant fleet from attacks from pirates or other country's, and thats still their main purpose. Read any book about it.

really, if you dont know what you are talking about, stfu

Re: What the flush am I working for?

@ CanadianTire.

I've been there a few weeks ago passing the gulf of aden, and there are shipping lanes which are "guarded" by warships, but once you're under attack, they will need several hours to reach, and unarmed thats against a buch of pirates in speedboats with arms, thats kinda difficult to hold out.

And about the mothership, yes they have it and use it, do you really think they can be out there for several days in their limited dingies?

Re: What the flush am I working for?

I don

The inmates are running the asylum

Re: What the flush am I working for?

Thats interesting CrazyOne.

I think the main thing is once the pirates actually have the ship, it becomes a hostage situation. All of the ships in the world wont change that type of situation.

Just need to hire a bunch of mercs, drop them in and shoot the place up.
Do that a few times and things will change

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.
