i think ADHD would be the easiest indeed, both depression and autism sound very interesting. If some subject hastn been explored very much yet, you can always babble about what you think should be researched in the future, mebbe even suggest some ways of doig it, lolz

wth?!

Re: Student Lounge

3 yr degree 1 year off then start phd whats wrong with that?

reallybig was here

Re: Student Lounge

Snowflake, PhD = title of Doctor (I think). In the current system in my uni, you have to spend like 8-10 years (minimum)before you can before a Dr. in an Arts program, and much longer I think in Sciences.

or, 3 yrs degree, 1 yr masters, and then phd, which seems more likely to me

only if he took 5-6 classes per semester and did all three semesters and dedicated every moment of his life to school; is that even remotely plausible.

taking 5-6 classes per semester without giving up on your social life is doable if you're smart

Thats normal in the UK which is where Lateralis is currently undertaking his PhD. And from what I remember Lateralis did a 3 years physics degree and then a 1 year masters. I'm sure he'll correct me though if I'm wrong. tongue

Also 3 years for a degree and 1-2 years for a masters is usually the norm. in the UK. Although it can vary depending on the course of study etc.

Re: Student Lounge

How the .... can you be 23 and already be taking a ph.d. :S I'm 21 and I'm halfway though my bachelor :S

How is the university system in Britain? Here in Denmark we go by the 3+2+3 system. 3 years of bachelor, 2 years for the candidate, and then afterwards the 3 years of ph.d. :S

Re: Student Lounge

i canada it's 4-3-3-ish

4 bachelors degree - 3 years for a masters - 3 years for your Phd

Still doens't make sense with Lat. At age 21 he got his masters, 19 bachelor. Age 16 he started his bachelor. :S Lat! Elaborate please. sad

Re: Student Lounge

I started at the university of Warwick, England, in 2003 - when I was 18 - and did a 4 year master of physics degree (MPhys; better than a BSc, but not worth as much as an MSc).  I then started my physics PhD after my undergraduate degree - I graduated summer of 2007 and began the PhD in July of that year.  Which means I'm currently a second year PhD student at the age of 23.

@ Cloud

"So what did you do your paper on?"

My undergraduate project was rather meaningless - although we did see some interesting stuff that isn't reported in the literature - but my PhD is materials physics based.  I study the physical and electronic properties of thin film magnetic materials which have been grown on semiconductors by my own fair hands, with one eye on potential applications in new and novel spintronic devices.  The thesis should hopefully be written by the start of 2011.  (At least, that's the plan!)

I would post the link to my research website, but I'm reluctant to do so on the forums. tongue

Re: Student Lounge

I think you're missing the point that the UK system is different to Canada or elsewhere.

I know Lateralis and he is in the second year of his PhD and only 23. I myself started my PhD when I was 21 and completed it at 25.

You typically start University in the UK at 18 and if your course is 3 years then you'll be 21 upon graduation. As in Lateralis's case if you do a masters you'll then be 22 upon completion (if 1 year in length as was Lateralis's) and if going straight into a PhD you will be 23 in your second year.

Re: Student Lounge

Well, the course is such that anyone who wanted to jump ship after three years could do so with a BSc.  But if you stayed for the extra year you got an MPhys, not a BSc, which as I said is more prestigious than a BSc but less prestigious than an MSc.  (Although a degree from Warwick is highly regarded.)

So if you want to think about it in your terms, then I did 3 years BSc then one year "masters" (although a MSc is a postgraduate degree whilst my MPhys is a wholly undergraduate degree).

Re: Student Lounge

masters without a bachelors? wha? that's the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Here in order to get a Masters, you need to spend 4 years in your bachelors, and another 3-4 on top of that. That's friggin bizarre, ok that's it, after this semester I'm moving to the UK to go to school.

Re: Student Lounge

After 3 years we get a bachelor, however most choose to study 6 month more to get a professional bachelor. The only difference is that the bachelor doesn't go out for an internship before the he gets his degree, whereas the professional bachelor does. Besides that there is no difference. Both can choose to take their masters more or less right after their bachelor paper.
