Topic: Atheists in US armed forces

From what I heard, Christianity plays an important role in the lives of those in the US armed forces, and it can act to the detriment of a member who isn't religious.

How do Atheists or Agnostics in the military manage that?

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

Dont talk bout it.

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

Justininian.....
From my personal experience......

In life, people question a higher being....usually young fairly well educated individuals.....
They question many things, not just religion.
Family/Parents authority, govt., Local influences....even friends....especially religion.

The US Military does have an embrace on Judeo/Christian beliefs....predominatly.....but not exclusively.  I want to be clear on this.
The "Chaplain" is educated in all religions, and will do his best to be informed on a religion someone may need council with.
They are NOT exclusively One religion or the other.....but, will defer to another Chaplain who happens to be better versed.

With that said.....

During Desert Shield, and the build up to the First Gulf.....I saw MANY many people all of a sudden "get Religion."
All of a sudden, the chapel was full, and many were embracing one "Faith" or another.

No one is forced to believe, mocked if they dint, or laughed at if they do believe in one faith or another.

When death is around the corner......you find many who come to religion for solace.

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

I dont see what there is to debate here tho.. some a religious (in the US a very large part) and that comes moer to the surface during testing situations such as a war..

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

BW,

Fair enough. Though it's different to be an Atheist because you have a philosophical background and have memorized all the arguments in your head that give you doubt about God, rather than merely doubting because you're ambivalent and have some unanswered questions.

Anyhow, from what I heard, christianity is highly valued in the military, and if you are vocal about having no faith you can experience difficulty getting promoted etc. I don't know how true this is, but I know that officers can make your life hell if they don't like you.

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

silly Justinian, thinking he's special because he has a couple arguments memorized that supports his beliefs in a lack of God.

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

atheists in the military is not a new thing. 50 years ago they were just wearing a different uniform.

Re: Atheists in US armed forces

Justinian,
I cant speak for the Officer Corp in the Army.  I cant speak for any other branch of service.

I Can speak for the US Army Non-Commissioned officers.
I Can especially speak for combat arms, an area where one could think Religion may be a factor.

Religion or a lack there of, have absolutely no influence ON THE WHOLE when considering an individual for promotion, or pass over.
