Topic: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

Palin was elected governor in 2006 after defeating incumbent governor Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary and former Democratic governor Tony Knowles in the general election. She was the youngest person, and the first woman, to be elected governor of Alaska. She gained attention for publicizing ethical violations by state Republican Party leaders. Before becoming governor, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla, Alaska, City Council from 1992 to 1996, was elected mayor of Wasilla in 1996. She also ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2002. Palin holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Idaho.

On August 29, 2008, Republican presidential candidate John McCain chose Palin to serve as his running mate. She will be the first female vice presidential candidate representing the Republican Party and the second female vice presidential candidate representing a major political party. She will also be the first politician from Alaska to run on a national ticket in a campaign for president or vice president.

Why in the hell would McCain choose his VP so soon after the DNC?  Not good for trying to get your moment in the spotlight.

Shall we merge this one into the other elections thread?

Oh, and indeed, it's a tad silly of him to go after the hillary votes tongue It's too obvious...

please..

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

why not Romney? hmm

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

Palin sure as hell has more executive experience than Obama does.  Obama was just a senator.  Palin was the governor of the largest state in the union.  The difference between the presidency and a senatorial position is vast.  Not to mention palin isnt running for president.

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

Despite your Obama rahrah, he remains basically TIED with McCain.

MILLIONS of Hillary supporters were voting for a woman, period.   They were mad at Obama for denying a WOMAN a shot at the White House.  They were double mad that Hillary wasn't VP.  So picking a woman for VP probably got McCain millions of those votes.

Further she is a very energetic conservative so that makes conservatives very happy.  I know plenty who want them to win and then deny McCain a 2nd term and nominate Palin in 2012 which could happen.

And in the news today in USA, McCain just about shoved Obama's speech off the radar.

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

I think that's a very clever move.

McCain will get the undecided, and even some democrats by tapping in Obama's meme "Candidates for change". He's back showing he's the bi-partisan, he's the change, and it's now backed by a vp that fought her own republican friends for justice. He knows he will get the republican votes by now, so he can turn to those unconvinced by Obama with a credible idea of "change" (that Obama kind of trashed with Biden's nomination).

And I predict she will just kill Biden in the debate. Not in the facts (who cares about the facts anyway), but Biden is too old a fighter to be asked to behave. He will smile with condescendence at her, he will laugh facing the public at her supposed little knowledge, look as a father to a child. In brief, he will hurt the sensibility of a lot of undecided who see Sarah Palin as a courageous mother and efficient worker living her own american dream. And I do believe this will hurt the democrats way more than if she actually could top him on the issues.

I might be wrong, we'll see... This is sure becoming more and more interesting.

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

@yell:
I think its a good strategy to pick a conservative, and yes the women-vote is gonna convice some. But Mitt Romney would have had even more effect with the conservatives and ok the women vote but he would have been a charismatic vice and not just some side-kick. And a much better vice overal...

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

@golk:
you make a lot of sence.

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

Soth the people in Alaska about equal the people in Texas

in the likely chance of being asked to take the office with ZERO ZERO foriegn policy experience, what do you think palin will do?

Obama has the judgement, and Biden has the experience and the judgement

McCain has the wrong judgment and the experience but Palin has NOTHING

Yell that wound was healed, during the convention, and this statement of yours SHOWS that McCain is nothing but looking for votes with this pick, McCain prior to today has ONLY met Palin ONCE, ONCE before in his LIFETIME..which i might add is QUITE LONG

he has NEVER worked with Palin, where as Biden has worked with Obama, they are both familiar with each other, they can work together and it has been prooven, we have yet to see if McCain and Palin can even work together, anyways the fact that McCain is only doing this for votes will show to Clinton supporters and women like it has for MANY MANY women already, tune into CNN for those views..that McCain thinks women are stupid enought to think that just cuz she's a women she can lead...they have OPPOSITE views for crying out loud

and we come back to judgement again

Obama picked Biden because he can work with him, and Biden brings the 30+ years of experience,
McCain picked Palin for the votes...she brings nothing more to the table... and now i'm DEEPLY concerned, thinking that if McCain does get the white house, and if god forbid something were to happen to him, how can Palin, being a pagent queen/sports broadcaster/mayor of a town with 6000 people/ governer for less than 2 years of a state which is frozen half the year and has only about as many people as texas
..how palin could lead a nation of 10s of millions of people with the world situation being as it is, and the threats being as high as they are, and america being the superpower of the world

HOW...HOW could Palin LEAD???

and if your counter for that is Obama doesn't have experience either, i'm..rather than debate(since i want this issue to drive the thread) just guna say Biden brings that foriegn policy experience and they work well together..they're rounded

McCain/Palin ARENT!!

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

Gladiator.  perhaps you should take a look at palins record as Governor not to mention her life experiences.  She has good judgement.  she holds strong to conservative values yet cares about the environment.  She is a responsible mother and can relate to the problem most middle class people deal with.  also like i said before her experience as Governor is much more valuable than a senatorial position.

@Little Paul
Sory for the engrish. If you don't understand something, I'll try again happily.
As for Romney, I do think he would have appeared as a perfect target for the "more of the same" attack, plus all the nice things you can recycle from the primaries. Just my view though.

To me, all of this is not so much about content now (most people interested in content already made their choice. Wrong? Really?) but about emotions and perception. The Dems convention just showed it, and soon we will see the same from the conservatives. In this fight, the bigbrother-like "Not ready to lead" is stronger than the "For change" message (both used in the best chinese fashion, getting hammered in your head to reappear at the moment you cast your ballot), and the freshness of Palin is better than a creepy Romney (or a sneering Biden). She's not supposed to lead anyway, she's an image invoked to boost McCain's boldness and to appeal to the american hearts. Nice shot, I'd say.

She done it fella.  Alaska may be small but it has an AG and a state assembly and plenty of DAs and mayors and two senators and some congressmen and she hacked her way through to be the governor.  No matter what your state there's always only a dozen or so real contenders and she made it.

good point Golk.  the people left to convince are the ones who dont care about politics.  if everyone was interested in content and policies they would be conservative anyway wink

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

The Clinton argument is kind of moot. I think Hilary has too much self-esteem (mmmh, ego, rather) not to issue a statement/speech showing clearly that Palin is a nemesis.
And that it would be a personal defeat if people who voted for her were to turn to Palin instead (though lot of respect blablabla).

If anything, the move on that side (women) will help Obama. Clinton disappointed voters will see it a bigger treason to agree with the "Palin's trap" than actually voting for Obama.
That is, if Clinton speaks out, which I expect her to. They just won't vote. I think this will have only a small effect.

But to so many americans afraid of the McCain/Bush relation, Palin makes a great effect. With her, McCain is back to his Maverick status, "changing Washington and being able to fight his own party" kind of stuff.

I talk engrish myself as it is my fourth language. When I said you make a lot of sence, it wasn't ment ironic.

"As for Romney, I do think he would have appeared as a perfect target for the "more of the same" attack"
he had very conservative points compered to McCain.

"plus all the nice things you can recycle from the primaries."
thats true idd.

Funny. You could replace Palin for Obama and Biden for McCain and you could just about say the exact same thing.

Re: Sarah Palin, McCains Running mate, Governor of Alaska

yell i'm guna read your post and reply to it in a minute

but i have to say...changing washington,..are you kidding me..golk i partly agree with your post

but the policies and the positions are all STILL the same!!!...

and Golk ..listent to Clinton's speech (Bill and Hillary) at the convention...  the hillary voters will not be moved...TRUST ME

BTW i'm trying to find the blog someone started...heard about it on the news..apparently it had a bit over a couple 100 thousand posts...a lot from women who gave their views on this pick and if they will vote for her as a women...they gave a overlook on the news and mostly just got pissed that McCain would dare even think women are stupid enough to just vote for a women

EDIT: after reading your post yell, i realized there was no real answer to anything in there... tongue just a bunch of jokes that make you look like a joke tongue
is that your way of getting out of unexplainable situations?

and your only real answer, the one about her only managing Alaska..i'll say again the town she was the mayor of, only had about 6000 people...how hard is it to manage 6000 people?

and we're after ONLY ONE..ONE meeting between McCain and her...are supposed to believe..McCain truly trusts her with the lives of 10s of millions of people in the states and billions across the world

It's perfectly explainable.  Obama has been in session with the US Senate exactly 146 days, he was a community organizer and a state senator, and YOU said that was enough to manage nukes.  So now you're stuck with it.

She is a governor, I know for some odd reason you guys want to say "mayor of a village" she is a governor, she hacked her way to the top of the state machine and only 50 people can manage that trick in the US.

You got a pair of 8s and a mess and you're up against a FULL HOUSE, Queens over Jacks.
