Public education and laws enforcing education are a necessity if you want to continue to live in a society that has some understanding of liberalism, science and reason.

You don't do it for the plebes, you do it out of your own self interest.

and i agree with wfs....offcourse government shouldn't do EVRYTHING..but they still need to a good portion or provide the opportunities

private education can be done at fractions of the fortune spent on public education, and with better results.

yes, without education, the plebs would go downhill. well, i can think of several swathes of territory with public education that are basically beyond the Pale, and public education is virtually meaningless there, except for rudimentary reading and arithmatic skills.
