Motivation. Motivation for me happened when I was married, and then even more so with children.
You perform in the top 20% w/o trying.
This is what you perceive maybe ?? Maybe, being such a fierce competitor, you feel you do not do enough to be in the top 5% and feel you can be there ?? As a competitor, competing for grades and knowledge, to beat the set curve by a given professor, you find yourself "only" in the top 20%.
You know you can do better ?? But, what the hell. You find school boring ?? I did. Do you find School is a waste of your time, except for your core 250+ level courses ?? I did.
I figured I wasted at least 12-15 classes on required BULLSHIT !!! And that is being nice.
When you hit the real world, thats when it all shakes out. You make a few bucks, you party, have a good time.....
then that "Lets settle down" bug hits. And the awakening sets in.
Now, its not about the next party, or the summer vacation....now your thinking about the mark you will make on this world.
For you.
For your family.
For your community.
Maybe for your country, Church, What ever affiliation.....at what ever level.
That I believe is when the passion sets in that fuels your Motivation.
Your new life experience, job experience, people experience gives you the focus to set those long range goals.
It didnt kick in for me until I was 28-29. The range you are looking forward expands. The family arrives.... Now its about feeding and clothing your family, getting a safe and secure home, then, all of a sudden, its about College for my kids and my retirement.
Can any of you younger guys....you college students look that far forward ??
I mean that as a soul searching question.
Its the reason I ride some on this forum for their thoughts, that what they believe can be so ingrained, at this age?
Most of you will change drastically.
Climbing that sheer cliff w/o safety equipment doesnt seem like such a good Idea when you have a wife and kids at home.
Trying to swim across that rapid moving river, or flipping your river boat in a class III or IV rapid doesnt seem like a good idea.
That four day winter camping trip might not be such a good idea.
Punching out that driver that cut you off, or cursing the dude that just bumped into you....not such a good Idea anymore.
the 48 hour binge, driving that motor cycle 100+ MPH, trusting that person you hardly know........Not such a good idea.
All things I did when I was younger, that I would NEVER do now. Because, the risk is not worth the thrill ?? Or maybe because I did it already, and I realize how stupid it was ?? I think, its because Im important to others now, more so than I am to myself. Therefor, I dont put myself at risk.
Justinian, We (you and I) may bounce off each other on opposing sides....but you will do well in life I believe just by the passion and intelligence you show on this forum. Yea, we all have fun, ribbing and ripping one and another as a community. But, the truly smart ones come to the top. Its shows.
I think you will do just fine.
And unless your setting me up for a kick in the balls, ROFL......thanks for asking me personally.
Come .......joust w/the master.
I'm always Right. You are just intellectually Left.....behind.
Individual patriot, and a REAGAN Conservative.
