Re: Protest against Violence Protest in Libya

over 30k people protested against the violent protest about the movie. They attacked a HQ of Muslim extremists and it came to heavy fighting. It gives me some hope for the countries future. I just hope the gov will manage to establish a peaceful democratic regime cause it won't be easy.

Re: Protest against Violence Protest in Libya

Cause and because are not the same word.
Not that you mean because anyway.

And for which countries' future do you have hope?

Plus in any case I think you misunderstand the protests. In the first instance the attack on the Benghazi consulate was not about the film, that was purely a trigger. In the same way, the anti-violence protests are just that; Libyans do not wish to live in a land of warlords - the attack on the Consulate has merely acted as a trigger.

Re: Protest against Violence Protest in Libya

"Cause and because are not the same word."
I thought Cause has different meanings and one is slang for because. Correct me if I'm wrong, my English is bad. In any case the meaning of the sentence is that despite the problems, I hope they will succeed in forming a stable democratic regime.

"And for which countries' future do you have hope?"
Libya

"Plus in any case I think you misunderstand the protests."
I'm open to other opinions tongue

"In the first instance the attack on the Benghazi consulate was not about the film, that was purely a trigger."
Altough not black and white, in general I agree.

"In the same way, the anti-violence protests are just that; Libyans do not wish to live in a land of warlords - the attack on the Consulate has merely acted as a trigger."
The attack might not be the main reason, but the people disagree with it still.  And its that signal, weak as it might be, together with the election results that gives me hope for the future of that country.

Re: Protest against Violence Protest in Libya

I'd avoid using slang or colloquialisms :-)  Despite the sub-par standard of much of this forum's English it's best not used. I'm optimistic about all countries' futures. Libya has potential and it is warming the vast majority are decent - but the road ahead is tough.

Re: Protest against Violence Protest in Libya

You do realize that not all people in this forum are native English speakers, right?

Re: Protest against Violence Protest in Libya

I realise that not everyone (Einstein, Kemp, Little Paul now springing to mind) is a native English speaker. That's why it is easier to stick to real words. Helps avoid confusion.

I'm also not a native speaker

Re: Protest against Violence Protest in Libya

You have to think of Islam's young age! Afterall, it's only 1400 years old, which in religious years makes it still just a teenager!

Put it in context, think what Christianity was doing when it was only 1400 years old... We're just lucky there weren't cellphones around to film that stuff back then big_smile
