Topic: Future of Imperial Conflict

Hi I am, UTF

I doubt any of you remember me. I began playing this game when it came out many years ago (10ish now?) but have since quit due to the game becoming an addiction, its lack of players or any sort of changes.

What I would like to know is who is running the show here? Is stephan long gone and if so who has the rights to Imperial Conflict? And those that may be in control what are you doing right now to improve the game and interest new players?  Why are there no Applications on devices or facebook for IC? what future projects are there for IC?

This game has a lot of potential but flounders because no one does anything.  If you are a moderator or part of the IC team could you please fill me in on what is going on here? If you would like to speak in private please provide your e-mail and I will contact you soon.

Thanks for your time

Stefan still owns the physical server, but he doesn't write code anymore. Elrohir and myself have been updating the game.

If you'd like to talk to any of us, hop on irc.imperialconflict.com and join #mod with any irc client.

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

Yup! Just as Ps said. Also, many changes are coming. Bringing IC up to speed in our modern gaming times is a lot of work, but it's being accomplished.

I hated this guy at the start, however, I played a round in PW with him where he went as an anonymous player. Our fam got smashed up and everyone pretty much left. Arby stayed around and helped out the remaining family. At the end of the round he revealed himself.... My views on him have changed since. Your a good guy.....

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

we sort of discussed a volunteer-based effort here: http://www.imperialconflict.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=153790 but it never really went beyond agreeing that it might be a good idea

maybe we should formally initiate something.  i'd hate to suggest an external forum, because those always seem to just die off.  mods, perhaps another forum specifically for promotion discussion?

Got a few bucks?  The Imperial Tip Jar is accepting contributions!

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

I agree with pie! There is all sorts of ways to promote. If the ideas are organized into a single forum it would may galvanize the effort

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

We just don't want to promote a game that scares people away! First we want to do some upgrades to improve the likeability for new players, etc.

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

This game doesn't scare people away.

Really, if I still play this game from time to time, and I started in 2001, anyone can.

Oh, bring back the old forums. Any vet knows what I mean. Those were fun forums!

Shame someone hacked them with Rick Rolls.

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

I miss the old forums for too. But I don't think the game is broken or out dated. Look at chess for petes sake. tongue I'm really happy that ya developers are making changes and upgrades but  I still like the mechanics of the game (Not to say I'm against improvement cuz i'm all for it big_smile) and I'm sure there are plenty of people who haven't discovered IC that would feel the same. As for folks leaving?  People just move on to other things in life and gaming. Once IC had  4-5 galaxies at a time including virgo. Mush of those filled galaxies was new players playing five or six rounds then finding something else. I'm sure many vets don't come back or stay from lack of players. The competitive feel is kinda disappearing with so few opponents. The forums are dead with so few posters. But these words are nothing new I guess.

One idea I had to breath a bit of life back in someday was to have pages for each player like FB. You can post pics up, have game history, a bio,  a wall and links to forum posting. maybe even the circle jerk like and dislike buttons of reddit.  This is the social networking age and IC was a part of that for many through out the years before FB. So keeping it competitive on the social level I think is key.  A big reason I come back to this game is not so much for the game but for the community and the social aspect. I'm an ex junkie and some times i'm not an ex.  When I have gone through periods of my life trying to get clean and away from my negative RL social groups I have turned to IC. It's helped a ton. The people I have met have been a boon to my well being and thank you so much  IC and  the ones that really  know wink

I understand  you guys have some things in store for the site and want a more complete product before ya promote.  When that time comes I will be ready to help smile I'll spam reddit, FB COD what ever it takes.

Black fish, ps, the other developers, mods and the gamers, you guys are awesome keeping this place running and alive!

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

Amspir you've pulled the sentiments right out of me.  It's great to hear other people who appreciate the community here.

I've had a similar experience.  I haven't played in quite some time but for some reason I still come back to the site and hang in the chats.  I've known some of you ICers for longer than many if not most of my RL friends.  That's not to say I'm anti-social either, but IC's always been around and I'm thankful for the friendships I've developed here.

And you're right on about the social element.  As an example, look at our "profile" pages if you can even call them that.  Here's mine: http://www.imperialconflict.com/forum/profile.php?id=2861

It doesn't say anything about me in relation to IC.  It's very much useless.

I do have to say though, that I partially disagree about the game being outdated.  I do agree that the core of the game, the mechanics, are completely fine.  As a game, it does well and has longevitiy.  But as a website it does need some work.  The profile thing is a good example of this.

I do miss the old forums too, and I'm sure it's partly nostalgia but really the current forums are nice and all but they are very dry.  What's worse is that they also lack some basic functionality.  I only learned recently that since we switched forums, vice leaders can no longer delete threads in the family forums.  That's insane!

The problem is, we have 2 volunteer devs who are doing all they can but are tasked with an enormous undertaking and also have real lives.  That said, work is being done and activity is there, so we just have to be patient and offer our thanks to those who keep things running.

So I'll restate it here: "Black fish, ps, the other developers, mods and the gamers, you guys are awesome keeping this place running and alive!"

Me too, many times over!  Thanks everybody.

Re: Future of Imperial Conflict

I will agree with Pie and Amspir on a few points.

1. Community is the primary reason I play. I built some good relationships in the 10+ years (off and on) that I have played and I still enjoy talking to those people.

2. The current Developer team is doing a great job at trying to help grow this game.

I know a lot of talk has gone on about what changes should be made, what should be added and all of that stuff, but I actually never see a poll put out for the players to vote on what they would like to see and would not like to see. Doing this may set things in stone to go ahead and push forward with a lot of the ideas brought forward.

This game could be really good again (people playing) if some things were done graphically, and promotionally i believe.

Riddler, you hit the nail on the head.

This game is fun, but it also feels like a game made when it was. It's got a great community of 'hardcores' but the problem is that it never really seemed to be advertised. It really never was 'out there.'

This is a better situation than a 'new game' has; you have loyal fans, who will join whatever game it's called whenever it's released, if only to see Primo's sig for the billionth damn time.

That said, imo, this game doesn't need a huge overhaul, it just needs new features. Why buy a VIP when all you really get is access to a 'hardcore' system you may never like playing in, and one useful in-game tool?!

Some additions I'd love to see:

1. VIP's have the ability to 'create' a game, once ever 6 mos, for up to 50 others.
2. VIP's have ability to access any amount of VIP games, normal accounts are capped at say one game.
3. The game gets boring when you've built all you can and are waiting on fleets to arrive. Speeding up a tick isn't likely, so more things to do, just random fun things, like say a minigame where you have a system's worth of planets and once a day you can 'choose one' and, for that day, you get a fun bonus, weather it's a population growth bonus, or a research bonus. It'd just give more stuff to do instead of 'boredom time.'
4. Bring back the old forums. NAO!
5. Make fighting over a planet more interactive. Atm it's just 'overwhelm the enemy,' but if you made it so that when you drop in to attack, you got a little screen where you had to move your troops, some to kill the portal (if there is one), others to take out lasers. You can set this before, but it'd make it more tactical than 'I have 100x your army, I win!'
