Topic: Spectrum thoughts

I was thinking just now. Television signals have been digitalized. The roll out, while some pain existed, was not to harsh over-all.

But there is a segment that is suffering really badly due to lack of spectrum. That would be wireless communications (both cellular and wifi).

The television bands are very bulky, but usually not a lot of saturation is happening. There is a lot of so called dead space in between channels.

In Portland an example... 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 22, 34, 50, 72 (the last few are guesses, I have not had tv without cable in a decade)

But digital signals allow us some room. A tv can be made to think a signal from 72 is really coming from 15, and 50 from 17...

The only real problem is it would require a hardware fix for each tower.

However as seen by cellular growth tower changes can be done relatively quick... and they might even foot the bill to get access to more range.

Given that we have potential to dramatically increase cellular bandwidth in many regions.

Of course a new 'adapter' would be required. So this would be a political hot potatoe, but it is a true potential increase that is very badly needed.

Think how much cellular companies are complaining about lack of bandwidth, and how AT&T is even throttling customers after a few Gigabytes (the grandfathered plans).

We could even mandate that half the bandwidth be sold to companies entering the cellular broadcast market (such as Cricket, US Cellular, and such) to further keep prices competative.

Sigh, I need to make Portland... want more sleep, but I really need to push.

Re: Spectrum thoughts

Um, aren't TV signal and wireless communications two very different signals? (even just between cellular and wifi signals)

Am trying to understand what you are saying here, are you suggesting the arranging TV stations to allow a greater range for data/voice networks?

Re: Spectrum thoughts

Well imagine a signal being an S form that keeps repeating.

Signals are easier to detect for certain activites (such as radar produces a nice reflective spash) and some are innapropriate for general communication (some microwave bands would literally cook the person, while others would had no measurable effect).

In the area of television, cellular, emergency bands, GPS, Military bands, radio (FM/AM), and Radio (CB and such) there is a lot of bandwidth, but it is tied up in historical usage ranges.

The problem is the cellular boom has made the need for more bandwidth essential to meet the growing demand. Thus far talk has been made of using 'White Space' betweej television channels to increase cellular bandwidth.

White Space or White Noise is a process where they deliberately broadcast static between television channels in an effort to prevent overlap of tv signals.

This dates back to times when broadcast equipment was much less precise.

The problem is that this would create a hodgepodge of different bandwidths at different locations... which would dramatically increase total costs as well as requiring more space on the phone to keep the locations stored.

By 'compressing' the different tv stations it should be possible to dramatically increase available bandwidth for cellular in most area's.

Actually super wifi would benefit most from this as they have already built up equipment specs needed to fill the bandwidth lost in white space. This could create a new means for data transmisssion to be very effective.

WiFi, or the 802.11b/g/n, all use the same frequency as microwaves wink (2.4ghz...used to find it funny to tell people who worried about cancer from their wireless router this fact and listen to them freak out).

Also, I am trying to understand what you are suggesting. Do you want all of the frequencies to be overhauled?

Re: Spectrum thoughts

Yes to some extent.

You see legacy settings is killing bandwidth. We should be more adaptive to reality.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

I don't know where to start...

> White Space ... is a process where they deliberately broadcast static between television channels ...

No, white space is actually the space between channels where nothing is being broadcast.
