Re: Places to Stay in Europe

It was made as a documentary when the railroad from bergen to oslo wa 100 years old or so, im not saying its not boring as hell, but actually it was quite popular.

That distance of railway is pretty spectacular and norwegian are pretty proud of it. At the time it was constructed it took several years to build and cost something like 4 national budgets..

Re: Places to Stay in Europe

well it really depends on how far north u are when it comes to the sun.

For bergen and olso in late august its i dunno, like pretty standard id say it get up in the morning like early tongue and its light until 10 pm or something.. very inaccurate tongue

If u want the full 24 hours of sun u have to go further north

Hey, tell me a little about urself aswell tongue

Re: Places to Stay in Europe

ok Noir. erm... My rl name is Kevin, I am a 24yr old who is in and out of Uni. currently taking time off due to lack of money (damn American education system! X(). I am working part time at a rental car agency. And I am engaged to a wonderful girl named Liz. We have 3 cats and an apartment together. and uh.... yeah. I'll be travelling with my friend from high school, and possibly my fiancee but i sort of doubt that cause i dont think she'll have enough money. so it would just be 2 of us. and my friend named Rich is sorta lame. but in a good way. he doesn't smoke pot or gamble or even go anywhere without making plans first or anything like that. so he is not a liability. which is good. erm. he is the same age as I am, and he works directing a local news affiliate for NBC.

so we are pretty normal people. and if you give us a place to stay we'll try and keep out of your way when you're busy, and leave your place when you're at work or whatever. and we'll try to pick up after ourselves as well. smile

so what about you? what assurances do i have that this is not an elaborate trap to molest me? tongue

lol.

A) he is a director, not a journalist

B) he is not Chris Hanson of NBC dateline, he helps produce the local CT area news. tongue So they might spring for us to go to New Haven, but otherwise... we're screwed. tongue

I went to Tallinn a couple of years back, it's beautiful city. Although I only saw the old quarter, but if you're going to Tallinn it's definitely worth spending a couple of days checking it out.

Re: Places to Stay in Europe

ok, update on life:

We totally abandoned our last plan because of expenses among other reasons.
We are now going to:

Belgium; Luxembourg; Munich; Bratislava; Auschwitz; Wroclaw; Kassel, Germany; and then back to Belgium.
We have hotels picked out, and a car rental, and we booked the airplane tickets already.

BUT, I HAVE A COUPLE URGENT QUESTIONS:

1) What is the best city in Belgium if you only have time to see one? Options include: Brussels, Leuven, Antwerpen, Ghent, Brugge, Liege.

2) We are renting a car and driving the entire route, including Poland. I have heard horror stories about driving in Poland, especially if our car has German plates... (which it will)   How bad are secondary roads and how bad is the driving at night time? I am worried about people overtaking when there is oncoming traffic, people weaving, people driving drunk, corrupt cops, people breaking into our car. How realistic of a scenario is this? Also, how bad is the western part of the country? I am hoping the really crappy areas are near the Ukraine and etc. and that the part near Wroclaw and Auschwitz doesn't suck...?

Re: Places to Stay in Europe

1) Antwerp or Brussels, Brussels has more tourists so you're better off there I guess. Try to grab a pint of beer before you go.

2) Once you get out of Germany and into Poland I would avoid driving too much at night. These aren't the same people as you are used to driving along with. They also overload their trucks.
