"Innocence is the price of justice..."
The words echoed around and around in his head as he stared, through the viewscreen, at the planet. He had received an Exterminate order from the High Command, and he knew what that meant. The High Command only issued an Exterminate order for one crime: treason.
Only now, face to face with destiny, did he realize that this planet was his homeworld.
Was this right? The High Command had only issued the order based on the crimes of one man. Did it make sense to annihilate seven billion innocent lives to punish the crimes of one?
He did not dispute the deplorable nature of Ragnar Mbuotu's actions, but did an entire population have to suffer as well?
It was then that the Overlord's voice spoke directly into his mind.

He knew, deep down, that this was a lie, but it was not his room to question it. He was an Inquisitor, after all. It was his job to quell uprisings like this. He should not be questioning decisions like this.
All the same, he was conscious that this was somehow different. Blasting a world he had never heard of was one thing. Destroying the home he had been raised on was another. He wanted Mbuotu dead too, but this was madness. Wasn't there a better way?
He would never forgive himself for this, he thought. "Commence extermination," he ordered.
A solid red beam of energy shot out from a massive emitter array at the front of the ship, penetrating straight through the planet's atmosphere, tunneling deep into the crust, and focusing at the planet's core. He closed his eyes, knowing what would happen next.
The entire planet's surface, until now a lush green paradise, suddenly flashed bright reddish-orange as the crust shattered, allowing molten magma to rush to the surface, entombing everything in a lethal torrent of superheated liquid rock.
He opened his eyes, beholding the destruction of everything he had once known. Mbuotu and his followers were dead, one more statistic to be added to the history records. But would anyone understand the cost?
He wanted to leave as quickly as possible, unable to face the reality of what he had just done. "We're finished here," he said in as level a voice as he could manage. "Take us out of here."
Price for justice, indeed, he reflected.
