Re: Book suggestions

Alright well, my wife got one of those fancy new Nooks and gave me her old one.  Any recommendations on must reads or your favorite books?  I like anything about physics, space, history, and philosophy.... and not too picky on fiction either.

The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe should be available

Re: Book suggestions

"Into the Heart of Borneo" or "Congo" by Redmond O'Hanlon, semi-non fictional books recording Redmond O'Hanlon's expedition through the jungles in those places in a humorous and interesting way. I'm not much of a reader, but I enjoyed reading these books!

Maar doodslaan deed hij niet, want tussen droom en daad,
Staan wetten in de weg en praktische bezwaren,
En ook weemoedigheid, die niemand kan verklaren,
En die des avonds komt, wanneer men slapen gaat.

Re: Book suggestions

Temmeraire series is good historical fantasy.

Modestus Experitus

Arby: A very strict mod, reminds me of a fat redneck who drives a truck around all day with a beer in one hand. I hated this guy at the start, however, I played a round in PW with him where he went as an anonymous player. Our fam got smashed up and everyone pretty much left. Arby stayed around and helped out the remaining family. At the end of the round he revealed himself.... My views on him have changed since. Your a good guy.....

Re: Book suggestions

I'm pretty much a fantasy/sci-fi reader, I'd recommend.

WoT series, Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson, last book comes out January 8th....and i can't flipping wait.  It is a long series though, gonna be 14 books + 1 prequel.

Mistborn series, Brandon Sanderson, written by the same guy that is finishing up the WoT series.  Nice little trilogy.

Temeraire, Naomi Novak, only reason i picked this up is i found it at a bargain store for $2 and it said in bold letters that Peter Jackson had just been awarded the movie rights.  Pretty good historical fantasy.

Dune Trilogy (it is a trilogy dammit), Frank Herbert, If you read sci-fi, and haven't read  Dune, go jump off a bridge.

Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card, Mean bug monsters X(

Silmarillion, J. R. R., I'm a huge Tolkien buff, and have read LOTR at least 7 times.  The Silmarillion gives a really interesting history of Middle Earth, it is a pretty tough read but is well worth it if you enjoyed lotr.  Also, if you haven't read LOTR, go do it.

Re: Book suggestions

and for something completely different: proper books!

- Atomised, also known as The Elementary Particles by Michelle Houellebecq. It's most likely the most important novel written in our lifetime.. If you want something else:

- Catch 22
- Vernon God Little
- doctor Zhivagho
- Crime & Punishment
- Angela's ashes
- Ludmilla's broken English
-

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Re: Book suggestions

if you want to read about 1400 unabridged pages of something that doesnt get old i would suggest war and peace.  as much of a war mongerer as i am, i actually enjoyed the incestual and dramatic relationships between the rich families more than the narratives of the battle scenes.  there are a ton of different characters but tolstoy does a good job in developing each and every one. im also russian so probably biased but w/e

Re: Book suggestions

If you're just interested in some light reading I would suggest John Grisham's last book, The Litigators. I thought it was decent.

I also heard JK Rowling's last book is alright but haven't read it myself.

Re: Book suggestions

Dashiell Hammett wrote 5 novels and they are all good

Red Harvest
The Dain Curse
The Maltese Falcon
The Glass Key
The Thin Man

Also Ian Fleming's Bond novels, I would start with Goldfinger or From Russia With Love if you haven't read any of them before

you would like The Thin Man pengy, you are a hard drinking husband son of immigrants who lives on his wits
