Topic: Campaign Issue: Fishing

I am going to buy two Salmon. I will have them placed in blocks of ice.

I will remove the fins from them both prior to this.

I will never keep track of which Salmon is which.

These Salmon will both be fished from the same river. They will be the same type of Salmon, e.g. Chinook.

I will ask the audience why these two fish are considered different species.

I will demonstrate that genetically they are the same. I will demonstrate that their diets and migratory patterns are similar. I will demonstrate that essentially they are the same.

So why do we call them seperate species, slap an threatened status on one, and the other is fine?

Eco-Liberal politics at its best is why.

They are the same, you can only tell them apart because the fins of one are clipped to differentiate the 'species'.

We are paying fish counters up to $100,000 a year to track the pure fins and the clipped fins.

What a waste, and what a fraud!

If a human is born in Africa he is not different than his brother if the same parents gave birth to his brother in America!

We need to stop these lies!

If we are allowed to fish in general (fish being healthier than beef and pork) we can provide thousands of jobs... from fisherman, to flayer, to net makers, to boat makers, and more. Jobs Oregon can desperately use.

That a significant amount of these jobs would be in my district helps my cause. My opponent does not like jobs, and our district shows this. SHOW TINA KOTEK THE DOOR!

How are you gonna demonstrate their dietary and migratory patterns if their dead?

Words will always retain their power.  Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen: the enunciation of truth.

Re: Campaign Issue: Fishing

They swim the same river. Previous tagging efforts and dietary examination as well as migratory cycles is available as evidence.

science is good. we, as humans, need to know everything, because science is not just flying to the moon or designing new cars. science is cooperation of diffrent scientific projects. the knowledge of the behavior of fish may lead to new results in other fields of science in the future.

Perhaps a good enough goal is to simply avoid catastrophic fishery collapses, as happen frequently when you fish with absolute disregard for the ecological system you're using.  North Atlantic cod in the '90s?  That was a tremendous disaster.  And most fisheries aren't particularly healthy.  California salmon (funny we're talking about that one) is on the verge of disappearing and many Oregon runs have been dangerously weak as well.  It's not dumb to make sure we don't wipe them out and ruin a resource that we currently have.  It's easy to complain about meddling government, but history has shown time and time again that without significant management fisheries do end up collapsing.

Re: Campaign Issue: Fishing

I agree with Hawaii on this, and to throw in some more examples, 2 Tuna species are on the Critically Endangered list...still plenty of Tuna being fished without regards to stocks.

I give your invention the worst score imaginable. An A minus MINUS!

Re: Campaign Issue: Fishing

I am talking stability here... increasing stocks via hatcheries and fishing the return without calling wild and farm raised two different species
