Greetings minions,

It's not often I post here, but I just wanted to tell the masses that Imperial Conflict has a new overlord - I_like_pie.

Many of you already know him, a longtime player, occasional mod and/or dev. As such, I am confident he will be able to take care of the game. Hopefully he will also be able to invest a bit of time in it, something I have not been able to for many years.

It's been a long ride, starting all the way back in 1999, with lots of excitement, a ton of players, and a fair bit of hard work. Some of you probably already know this, but the game was actually my full-time occupation for an admittedly fairly short time (~half of 2001). Later, things calmed down, with the odd burst of development. The team of moderators is what kept the game running (mostly) smoothly all this time, along with help from a few developers.

I hope to see the game still alive and doing well for many years to come! Over and out.

Today I decided to block a certain player who had some time ago taken over what used to be our official Facebook group, linked from the game front. The player has since abused it for his own ends. The player was given a very clear ultimatum to either return it or face a permanent block in this game, and declined - quite graphically.

As you may know, I very rarely involve myself in the management of the game, and leave this sort of thing for the mod team. But in this case I felt compelled to take action.

Everyone is of course free to disagree with my decision, but it is final.

Also, congrats to Canada on the hockey victory!

I can not reproduce this. Can someone confirm this is happening as of now?

Sliders, Missing images and Galaxy Map background missing might be Google Chrome problems. With Firefox and IE those work.

Clicking race links in IE make whole page look weird now. Menu takes over whole top of the page.

System Info in Chrome is still in one column without separate window and in IE in two column window, but planet images are so huge, that when opened from Galaxy Map the System Info window does not fit to screen always and the close link in bottom can´t be used (yes, it can be bypassed by scrolling page down and opening a new System Info which you can then close, but it is hard work).

When opened from Quick View (in IE), System Info is just messy and it is even hard to tell which ress bonus belongs to which planet.

Still minor tweaks to do here and there I guess, but the game should be playable. smile

No, all these things work in Chrome for me, so it must be local.

Upper right menu does not work properly. Wiki link directs to maintenance page and forum link downloads something.

Could not get into forum that way. Came here from fam forum. Direct URL probably works too.

Some icons are missing: endo/octa/iron/food/cash/morale/NW, all menu icons from sidemenu. Resource icons seem to work in market though.
Only explo ship icon missing from units.
Also political advisors icon missing, but infrastructure advisor´s icon is ok.

Galaxy Map has no background. Systems and planet info opens without a box and in one column.

Same thing with systems and planets from Quick View. One column and centered to left.

No families in rankings.

"No such race" info when clicking any race links. Yes, even official races.

Covert options gave this for agent amount in a textbox: "90410 data-slider-value="
Magic gave only max amount of wizzies without any sliders. Just a textbox with value.

Sliders replaced with textboxes in various other places like infra and unit building pages.

Graphs lack red color in council page. Yes, this is probably #1 priority to fix! wink

No recent reports. Empty page there.

There´s some observations.

I could only confirm the rankings, forum and race links not working - all fixed. The missing images and weird sliders (due to missing scripts) may be local issues.

As you can see, the game is up now. But there will be various issues for a while until things are sorted.

I recently left the job which hosted the previous server, and never got around to moving the game. The other day they apparently found my server and turned it off. Fortunately they were kind enough to temporarily turn it back on.

The game issues are mainly from having a slightly different configuration than the old server.

Time is not enabled quite yet.

Report any issues you have in the Bugs forum.

For our long-suffering mobile users there is now a more mobile-friendly map in the game.

In addition, various adjustments have been made to make the game more suitable for small screen devices.

This is actually intended and was changed earlier today. Wizards and agents are not relevant to the fleet view.

Starting today, it is possible to move orbiting fleets to other planets directly, and instantly. This is done from the fleet list.

This is part of a few measures planned to make attacking more attractive, and less time-consuming. The rest will come soon.

Back in the ancient mists of time there was a sister game to Imperial Conflict, which was called Final Conquest. I recently started on a new version, which you can find at:

http://conquestgame.net

It is not complete, but playable. Have a look!

There is a forum for it here: http://imperialconflict.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=8392

Next up - Dragon Lords. No, just kidding.

The game is not unplayable on "most" phones. On some, yes, but far from the majority. It works well on iOS for starters, which is around 30% of all. The Android devices I have tested it on it works also. On smaller screens it does not work well. Desktop remains our main target platform, though these things will be eventually be fixed.

However, this thread was about ideas on how to grow the player base - now. Please refrain from polluting it with your point of view on what have or should have been done. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but this is not the place.

What, that elusive freak Stefan asking the users something directly? Madness!

Anyway, as you know, there have been a lot of changes recently, some of them causing issues, some of them not being exactly universally approved of.

The one - and only - reason for these changes was, to put it blunt, to make the game possible to promote to new people. The previous look may have been preferable to some, and the new one is surely not perfect - but it is at least presentable. A new player would previously most likely just leave after seeing the actual game, if the player even got that far. They still might, but not because they thought someone had just forgot to turn off the server in 2001.

So a lot of work has gone in to make the game something that can be promoted. Many things remain, but that is not what this thread is for. It is also not for arguing about the changes.

The next step is to promote the game and to grow the player base back to a sustainable level. Currently the number of players is too low to sustain itself. Without action, the game will surely die.

The mod team and I have some ideas, and there already is a little bit of promotion taking place, but nothing fantastic that is likely to have any great effect.

So I would like your input/help with this. How to attract new players, preferably in droves, and quickly?

The map just doesn't scroll. I use the touchpad on laptop. I suspect this is the cause. Can't test it with a mouse tho.
This is in firefox and chrome.

Also the popup of a system can be to large. When someone has fully explored it. I can't close the system. The close system button is on the bottom of the screen. But this part is hidden under the border of the galaxy map screen. Scroll down doesn't fix it because the popup sticks to the bottom.
No idea if I can post URLs..
But here is a screenshot

First off, thanks for the constructive criticism - it is very useful, but surprisingly rare.

About scrolling - for me it works fine with single finger press and swipe using the touchpad. With double finger swipe without pressing, the map zooms instead. Both Safari and Chrome, most likely FF as well. Is this the same for you?

System view being too large: I could see this happening in a small interval of window sizes (700-640px in height) before the responsiveness kicked in and shrunk it. I increased the threshold a bit now and can not see it anymore. Fixed for you? You may need to hit Reload to force your browser to refresh its locally cached CSS file.

New map is awful on my macbook, there's no way I would dream of trying it on a tablet or phone are you kidding me?

Old map doesn't function correctly in chrome or safari either, I guess I'm supposed to go get another browser now.

PLEASE FIX THE MAP THIS IS RIDICULOUS

Could you describe in detail what issue you have with the new map on your Macbook? I have a MacBook Air myself, and the map works perfectly in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. The old map is not meant to be used on desktop.

Just to be clear - the old map is not intended for (or at all tested yet on) desktop. It is only meant as a last resort for mobile use in case you have problems. Notably, many Android users still have problems. For desktop use our normal map should be fine for the vast majority, based on usage statistics. It has been tested and verified to work on Firefox, IE10, Chrome, and Safari. Your mileage may of course vary.

Small updates today; the default lists, except for specific family, now maintain state between views. A few bugs with the options not maintaining state or outright working (grid) were fixed.

The link to the old map is now back on the Empire Overview, and it uses the same system/planet view (etc) as the modern map.

It is now possible to demolish buildings from the map again.

The map system view is now used throughout the game instead of the old map's various views (system, planet, explore, attack, transfer, etc). As a consequence, the old map serves no purpose and is entirely gone. It was about time.

There are still many mobile devices that the map is unusable on and infact since you decided to go to this new HORRIBLE looking layout and change the map at that time again, it's back to being barely usable on computer even after it was finally getting to be decent prior to the layout.

Breaking news - haters gonna hate.

The new map does not work 100% on 100% of all possible devices. It, like the game itself, most likely never will. It does a good job of working on most devices though.

Similiarily, the new layout will not be favored by 100% of all possible users, and it also probably never will be.

The old map is removed so that we can move on. As long as it, and all its associated views, was still there, there would always be almost two games to maintain instead of one. Not to mention a very inconsistent game.

The map should now be fully compatible with Android devices. Previously it worked, but scrolling was very sluggish. My fairly old SG2 now handles it with ease.
