4.  Think of how much money the government makes off of taxing fuel, you think they are going to let that golden egg go to rot?

In the US, we subsidize our oil companies as well... lol!  tongue

EDIT: Explanation: Oil companies were able to get subsidies early on for shipping and other expenses, when oil prices were relatively cheap (making the argument that, although oil was necessary, it was unprofitable for the industry).  Even in 2005, though, the oil companies were saying that they didn't need the subsidies anymore.  Come 2011, however... they've argued that reducing subsidies would drive up the price of oil.

it did happen years ago :X

Yes... it happened... and was removed.  Thus... it's probably not coming back without some serious changes.

Please stop derailing the topic.

Agreed 150%.

That being said, there may be ways the 2nd idea could be balanced out, and may actually make opping a level of warfare as strategic as attacking.

First of all, I would say there's no reason in hell why this should be attached to No Fear in the first place.  It would be perfectly justified as its own opp, if implemented.  Since No Fear is used anyway currently, there's really no reason to make that op more powerful.

Second, it could be a limited time span spell.  Similar to how No Fear only lasts a few ticks, the new op could provide protection only against an op cast within a short timeframe.

Third, the op could automatically trigger, regardless of whether the original op attempt would have worked or not.  So if a banker casts this defensive op and a pax sends 10 wizards to hypno a 10 million strong wizard defense, the defensive op would trigger regardless of the fact that the op had no chance in hell of success.

Fourth, and most important... the self op should show up on your recent events report.

The result of these changes is that a pax could still break through a barrier, but with coordination.  The specific counter-strategy to an op I described above would include infiltrating the target (to find out when a player is protected by a barrier, and how many barriers), then using a second player to trip the barriers, clearing the way for the pax player to hypno the target.

He wants No Fear tweaked to either add a magic defense bonus (his suggested number was 10%), or to automatically negate the next offensive op against that empire (so in the 2nd option, casting No Fear on oneself 7 times would protect the player from the next 7 Hypnos that happened).

Dumbed down version:

Players sign up for the galaxy.
Pretend, for example, that the galaxy consisted of 6 players:
Zarf
Justinian
Xeno
Flint
You_Fool
Decimus

(Yes, I picked all politics people for this purpose)

People who aren't playing in that galaxy would then offer proposed family setups:
So, a smart ass may suggest the following:
Family A:
Decimus
Flint
You_Fool

Family B:
Zarf
Justinian
Xeno

Someone else may offer:
Family A:
Zarf
Justinian
Flint

Family B:
Xeno
Decimus
You_Fool

Then the players playing in that galaxy vote amongst the offered family setups (they are voting on the setups for all families, not just their own).

The setup with the most votes... is the family setup for the round!

The idea is simple:

Phase 1: Signup.  A sign-up thread starts in uni news, allowing players to sign up individually.

Phase 2: Family set-up nominations.  After enough players have signed up (that number to be determined by the mods), the community is given a complete list in Uni News of all players.  People who are not playing in the galaxy will construct family lineups.  Lineups must include every player participating in the game.  In addition, a person may nominate another person's lineup.

Phase 3: Family set-up voting.  Players participating in the galaxy then vote for the family lineup they would most like (NOTE: For this to work, there must obviously be at least enough families to ensure that, if a lineup uniquely favored one family/alliance, the other families/alliances could outweigh their voting power).  The setup with the most votes is the lineup for the galaxy (and I would suggest that the person who created that setup should get a custom tag).

With regards to troop deployments anywhere in the world, China hasn't yet overcome the issue of a blue water navy.

Anyway, please refer to the other thread on the question of the Chinese vs. US hegemony comparison...
