"Kemp.  These mechanisms have degraded to the point where they "act almost exclusively in the interests of the ruling class." "

These mechanisms are a democratic government. I agree our populace has degraded into largely unproductive, ignorant wankers. But the solution to this is a cultural fight against unproductive idiots who vote. The solution isn't to ditch democratic policies because they're not working out great with a dumb population. The solution is to work on that dumb population.

If you disagree, do elaborate as to what you think should replace democratic government?

"If the vast majority of a population of a modern democracy for whatever reason are not educated or informed enough to be responsible voters, face it: any government elected by said population is illegitimate."

That's stupid. It's not government's role to raise people's kids right. It's not government's job to force people to learn (and retain) history. It's not government's role to force a work ethic on people.

Government's role is to let go of their school monopoly and let students' parents decide where they want their kid to learn. Government's role is to not babysit morons from cradle to grave and let them suffer the consequences of their own bad decisions--This results in better decisions, more productivity, and higher standards of living for all.

"Free market?  Where?  THE FREE MARKET DOESN'T EXIST."

That's stupid too. While statism corrupts much of it, there's a relatively free market all around you.

"There is more evidence to believe inter-breeding between the tooth-fairies and leprechauns result in mini-kemps than there is to believe there is anything even remotely like a "free market" in our current economic climate."

Are you on drugs? I choose my bourbon in a relatively free market. I have lots of options, because of the relative freedom of the market in which I buy it. I do the same with my non genetically modified organic tortilla chips and delicious salsa. And my car. Sexy flat and wide monitor in front of me. TV next to me. New plants in my garden. And I could go on. And on. And on.

Your notion that our markets are 0% free is just stupid. You're not even presenting an argument. And the notion is just dumb.

"The solution is new technologies and ultra-cheap (if not free) products designed to help individuals fulfill their own basic human needs: shelter, food, clothing. And to do so self-sufficiently without any reliance on any governmental, social or financial system."

Free? Because of the self-replicating robot technology we got from aliens?

xeno, are you on drugs? That technology does not exist. There aren't billions of free homes, foodstuffs, and articles of clothing anywhere to sell or give out "ultra-cheap" or "free." You're making things up which do not exist in reality and pretending your imagination has any bearing on anything. This is why I'm asking, are you on drugs? Because what you're saying literally doesn't make any sense.

Acolyte,

I have strong Libertarian leanings. I'll be voting for Gary Johnson in the fall. I certainly agree that many government "services" should be entirely privatized. I'm certainly open to arguments about privatizing even more than I already support.

If people agree that their community needs a service, they should hire competing people/agencies in a free market to do it. Free markets produce the best results for the least burden on the community paying for them.

I do see a use for some government--a limited and constitutional one, such as we haven't had in more than a hundred years. Because, if EVERYTHING were privatized, we'd still have groups forming for laws and mutual interests which would effectively be government. The key is to keep government that limited, not call it different names.

I'm not judging the movement. I don't claim that those killings were surely done by rebels.

But you DO judge the movement, with no more information than I have. That's my point.

"why? It was occupied by the nazis so they invaded france."

France was liberated and returned to the French people. France was not in civil war. France was not occupied by Allied forces after Axis forces were defeated. France did not have a new constitution forced on it by Allied nations.

"By putting pressure on the new regime. Either military, diplomatic or economic."

How'd that work out in Iran? How's it working out in Egypt?

Your wishful thinking is nice and all, but I'm not convinced it's justification to kill Syrians and get Americans killed in the process.

The funny thing is that we all know Obama and Holder did it for ammunition to use against the 2nd Amendment.

And all their supporters don't care. They could care less about human deaths.

Mace, that's just economically ignorant wishful thinking.

Seriously, why do people who know absolutely nothing about things formulate opinions on them purely on belief? The world does not magically work the way you like to pretend it works. Maybe if you got an education before you opened your mouth you wouldn't annoy people by spouting ignorant garbage.

You failed to mention the standard of living hit people take by paying twice as much for oil. You failed to account for its making their gasoline more pricey. And milk. And bread. And clothes. And literally everything else. And you failed to balance this against the "extra" money kept in the US economy.

It's ignorant pretend economics like yours that lead idiots to think communism leads to everyone being super rich! You don't know anything about wealth or economics.

The US has a lot of oil. The US isn't drilling for it because our government has been refusing new permits for years. The US is government is, however, giving tens of millions to foreign oil companies to drill where it refuses to let US oil companies drill! Our government is filled with morons. So is our population, who elects them.

His voters aren't the most sophisticated people.

The ones who are sophisticated wouldn't be seen at such a cheap event. They're the people who benefit from his statist policies, not the idiots gullible enough to believe they're good for everyone.

What Romney 100% will not do, is propose a restructuring of government assistance to actually help people, rather than reward dependence in exchange for votes.

I wouldn't have a problem giving more money in aid to people if it was aimed at training/education so they could find work, or more productive/rewarding work. I wouldn't have a problem giving more money in aid to people with children if it didn't reward them for having more and more and more kids even after they got on government assistance.

But all of our assistance is designed to buy votes, not help people. It supports ever-growing federal and state bureaucracy, rather than subsidizes those with needs in a free market. It rewards irresponsibility and punishes responsible behavior. Shocking surprise: Behavior has gotten worse, and people have become less responsible, since these programs were created and expanded.

This is why I lean Libertarian. Because, on this issue as with many others, Republicans--at least in any quantity to ever get anything passed--usually have the same views as Democrats. It's a whole lot of don't rock the boat, status quo got me into office, let's ride this thing as long as we can!

And this is why I have no respect for you intellectual cowards and dumbasses raised poorly to think your opinion is always equal to mine. I have history and common sense on my side when I say that free markets are good for absolutely everyone. And you've got nothing but naive, stupid, childish idiocy on your side when you dream ooooo, communism is the best, it takes care of everyone! <3 You have every right to your opinion and to voice it, if you're arrogant enough to not recognize your ignorance and naivete. But you don't have any right to respect, which such ignorant, cowardly, and evil nonsense does not deserve.

I love all this "get out the vote" garbage.

If you don't know a damn thing about politics, philosophy, or--most of all--history, face it: You probably shouldn't vote.

If you don't know that you have the right to vote, face it: You probably shouldn't vote.

If you need a tax-funded campaign to tell you about voting and how you can do it, face it: You probably shouldn't vote.

There's no inherent virtue in a high % voter turnout, in general or for any minority group. You could get 100% of people who have absolutely no interest in ever being productive or getting off of government assistance to show up and vote. But that wouldn't be a good thing.

We have the mechanisms in place to protect against that trend.

Too bad we don't have the cultural integrity to educate our children, value education, or know wisdom when it punches us in the face. Save me government! I'm inept and require your assistance! I'll bankrupt my kids, just promise me lots of stuff!

"Einstein may go against economic reasoning to support the industry. But surely better to spend $200 per barrel equiv on this and know all the money stays inside the American economy than $100 on oil with almost all the money going to other nations?"

Nope. Cheaper energy is good for everyone. It's ignorance like this coupled with arrogance like this that led to the 2008 crisis and massively inflated cost of living all over the West--significantly reducing standards of living.

Your problem is with crappy Republican procedure, not Paul.

Paul is a republican.

All responsible Americans are voting for Gary Johnson.

You'd rather vote for Obama than Paul because Paul holds more respectable and responsible positions than you do, and this upsets you greatly.

If you don't care about the topic enough to know anything about it, why do you make so many assumptions and believe anything about it on faith?

"actually the allies -did- invade Europe in WW2 and made democracy possible."

You can't "invade" your own nation. It's not much of an "invasion" when you liberate your allies--certainly not the type you advocate here.

"You ask me what is the difference between us killing specific military targets or the civilians getting killed at mass by the regime? The death toll ofc."

How can you "enforce" a democratic government by killing specific military targets. You're referring to spending billions in special ops and/or airstrikes involvement when it suits you, and switching to a complete invasion, occupation, and nation-building when it suits you.

I mention death tolls, you refer to limited support. I mention who will take power, you refer to invasion and occupation. Cute.

"We are pretty sure what will happen if we don't react. Bloodshed. Whether its a brutal civil war or a slow killing of own population. Thats what we risk by doing nothing."

We don't risk killing people for 0 gain if we don't react. That's my point. Unless we know we're actually helping the Syrian people--which we don't--unless it's somehow our business, you've hardly provided justification for war.

Your argument is that "well it's bad now" so we should invade? For what gain? You don't know, because we don't know who would rise to power.

It appears the rebels just slaughtered civilians yesterday. As expected, more evidence of what I've been saying all along. Egypt elected extremists into a majority in both parliament and the office of president, more evidence of what I've been saying all along.

Where's the evidence that the rebels are democratic, non extremists who deserve our support? You continually miss the point that you've not provided any justification for war.

"Many towns got looted. Large parts of the south were destroyed. It was a socioeconomic disaster. Ok its not like the natives but still not an example of "why bother"."

And again you missed the point! Reading skills aren't your strong suite, huh? I was talking about the cultural presumptions you make about the Syrian rebels, who you think MUST be better than Assad's regime, because you just presume they're like you or me. You continually provide no evidence that they deserve our support in warfare, and miss  the point every time I question your presumption.

"I beg to differ. Even if the idea is only shared by a minority its still there."

I didn't argue that nobody had democratic ideals. I argued that, because a majority do not, trying to force democracy upon people who aren't prepared to take part in it tends to result in minority extremists with organization taking power, as we're seeing in Egypt. That's my point. That a minority is not extremists and values democratic principles is irrelevant. Again you miss the point! Damn you're consistent.

I never argued that NOBODY held democratic ideals. Why would you presume that? That's just stupid. How is it relevant to what I said to point out that a minority hold democratic ideals? Of course they do. So what? You don't have a point. You're just ignoring all of my points. This is more of the stupid, pointless rambling. I can hardly respect a low level of spamming responses that don't even demonstrate comprehension of, let alone responses to my points and arguments. I can't debate or discuss anything with anyone who cannot comprehend my simple statements in simple English.

I'm not using big words. I'm not using overly complex sentences in conjunction with big words. I don't see any legitimate reason why you're missing the point of absolutely everything I say and responding as if I said something else with irrelevant nonsense.

So there's a minority with democratic values? So what? That's not a response to what I said. That's an obvious fact with no relevance. That's why you don't get respect: because you're being disrespectful to everybody. You're just insulting me and anyone else unfortunate enough to read this drivel with stupid responses like this one. It doesn't make any sense. It's not a response to what I said. It has no relevance to anything. It's just dumb.

"Its a big challenge but no reason to keep the country in the dark for centuries to come. It took the west a while to become what they are now, with steps forward and backward, and there's a long process ahead still. That doesn't mean it was all worth it."

Nobody invaded and pushed freedoms on the West. When an authoritarian regime is in civil war with a wannabe authoritarian regime, the West invading and trying to force a democratic government upon those groups isn't helping them in a "process." To pretend that Syria is in a "process" toward freedoms, or to pretend that they're in a "process" and we should help them by invading them, is just bizarre. There's no parallel. They're culturally very different from the West, and they're fighting for very different reasons. Furthermore, no Western nation was aided in its struggle for self-determination by invasion. Even foreign aid was in the case of sustained war efforts with clear sides with clear causes.

So keep missing points and insulting all of us! Continue not answering our questions regarding the rebels and our lack of any reason to expect them to be better than Assad's regime! Just argue that it's bad, and clearly it'll be better if we rain death from the sky and switch their tyrannical regime out for another one! That always helps.
