150 years ago, it would have similarly been considered impractical to study matter at the atomic level, under the exact same argument (how can we use the knowledge of matter being made up of atoms?). However, here you are today, using manipulation of matter at the atomic level as an example of practical science. Nanotechnology would not be possible until people first knew that matter was made of protons, neutrons, and electrons, and how each particle opetated. Nanotechnology was not even a concept until the 1950's.
So yes, as far as we know, there may not be a pract ical application. However, our generation is only scratching the surface of the field. Asking someone today to tell a practical technology application is sort of like telling a high school student about atoms, then asking him its practical application. It isn't up to our generation to find practical application for higgs boson particles. Our job is to find practical applications of the the theoretical sciebcea from last generation, and establish new groundwork for next generation.
I'm not sure why I left this open.

Less discussion of pertinent political issues! More pictures of Bernanke in clown costumes!
"Welcome to McDonald's, how can I help you?"
"I'd like a big mac meal."
"Would you like that large?"
"Oh, what the heck. Alright."
"Anything else?"
"No."

Mathematically, it's impossible for you to claim that a government could not increase its revenue in the long-term by raising taxes from 0% to 1% because since taxes in a 0% tax rate world=0, an increase to 1% (i.e., the adoption of a tax) would need to immediately crash the economy. Because that's obviously not the case, the alternative explanation is that taxes exist in a Laffer Curve system (i.e., there is a tax rate somewhere at which point tax revenue would be maximized, with overall tax revenue being lower with either a lower or higher tax rate).
That being said, TOs operate in this exact same sense, in that beyond a certain percentage rate (25% for CFs, variable for LQ bankers), raising overall tax collection creates an inefficient return on investment. So yes, what you describe is modeled in the Tax Office system. ![]()

If a mod edits their own post (such as to make a politics argument more awesome), are they still subject to the 903 tax?
And he didn't actually win the election. Roosevelt originally tried to run under the Republican ticket, but lost at the primary to Taft, so he ditched the Republicans and formed the Bull Moose party. They both lost to Woodrow Wilson in the general. ![]()
Not to mention said viewpoint by Mace assumes the government we're buying oil from is just throwing the money into a landfill. In reality, the vast majority of oil-exporting nations also have significant amounts of imports, either because the nation produces very little other goods and must import most everything (think Saudi Arabia or Iraq) or it has used the oil to create an economically thriving and specialized nation, requiring imports to fill niches (think Canada). Either way, the money used to buy oil isn't just lost.

It is impossible for me to read anything about fracking without forgetting that I'm not reading the script of a censored Battlestar Galactica episode.
Pretty sure the law don't work like this. ![]()
I'm picturing a mass increase in the number of people volunteering at hospitals and applying as medical test subjects during their last week of vacation.

The events in question did not occur in Nevada. Your random reference to your awareness of Nevada law is thus irrelevant and juvenile! ![]()
This coming from the person who does grammar checks in 70% of politics threads? ![]()

Pahrump, Nevada says you're wrong ![]()
No thread necromancy!
Dpeng, the goal is to keep both the doctor and coroner away!
Or at least store it for later! Saving roadkill for later is exactly why you need to make sure there's a refrigerated part of the truck!
So... are we saying, then, that it's fine for companies to take a stand on political issues as long as those issues are part of what is in the interests of the company? So... oil and non-oil energy companies should be able to take stands on energy issues, but not on gay marriage? ![]()
