In a city where streets are numbered and in straight lines and crossing eachother in a geometricly sublime way, that's just plain stupid...
Besides, no one bothered to assist the man personally themselves. They might have phoned 911, but never showed true compassion..

At least you could have asked me to edit it myself, Primo.
What credibility can I build up when you edit me out of the blue..

"If I truly wanted to keep going I would compare Hitler's nationalizing industry 'for the peoples good' with Obama's nationalization progrom."

It was a popular thing at that time, and neither invented nor practised alone by Hitler..

"Under his premise the ethics of child rape might be allowed to flourish as an good ethic, but I cannot see a moden society (Islam not withstanding) proving this to be true. I believe that another fundemental comes into play."

Islam does not promote child rape. It doesn't even promote child marriages. You'll probably going to retort that Muhammad married a 7 year old, but that's a false arguement. You see Islam is not a unified religion, pretty much like "christianity" covers the catholic church, the orthodox church, the eastern christianities, the forms of christianity in the Caucasus, the protestant denominations and their offspring (like mormons). Among these, there are a lot of differences. Amish famously consider electricity to be harmful to the soul and find a line in the bible to support that! Or even better, the cult of the Children of God who promoted flirty fishing, had child mariages and *GASP* indulged in large orgies that involved children!
Islam is as diverse. When we return to Islam then, you'll find that child marriages are accepted by a small minority and loathed by a large majority. Child rape however is loathed by all.
It's true however that there are some denominations of Islam that score poorly when we compare it to the declaration of human rights (like those crooks of the Taliban). But these are, after all, a small but ferocious group. On the other hand, we can also see a group of leaders that (ab)use Islam or the Qu'ran to jusify certain actions or even scandals. In a land where hierachy is regarded highly and a large part of the population is godfearing and nearly illiterate or lowly educated, it's a handy tool. In this they are no pioneers either; The catholic church has done the same thing for many centuries now, with it's pinnacle in the 19th century, when it told the impoverished people not to act to improve their situation. Even to this day, we see the scandals of abusive clergy pile up. They were held silent by the same moral intimidation.

It's the same crap all over in a different place.. Don't criticize your neighbour's garden when your hedges are equally unkept..

It's sad to see your opinion of Islam to be so narrow and uninformed. And I see it as a sample of the American people's idea of Islam. It's painfully ignorant.. If your country wants to see the end of the conflict with Islamic people and want to pacify the Middle East, that'll have to change. Understanding leads ultimatly to acceptation..

Alinsky's views were unknown to me before this thread. But if they are all as you put them down here, they seem quite simplistic to me..

"there's a constitutional requirement that the President be a natural American as opposed to an immigrant gifted citizenship"

I know of this rule. But if the larger part of the population votes for Obama anyway, what does it matter? You're always going on about giving the freedom to the people to decide. They have, and they didn't care!
Besides, it's a stupid rule, get rid of it..

'Then perhaps you can elaborate on what groups have the most share of political power?'

We have about 5 to 6 large parties on each side of the language border, and a dozen smaller ones. Most of them are parallell: we have a liberal (continental liberal), christian, socialist, green and a more nationalistic party on each side. A lot of rivaling ideas means a lot of people needed to step in. Our political parties consist, because of this system based on the degree of political engagement, largely out of all sorts of people.. Elected people thus come from all layers of the population.
However, in the top levels, most of the elected are independent lawyers (not working for a firm) or economists (again, not working for a firm)..

The industrious are most in favour of the liberals, as they mostly defend the Adam Smith economy; but that party isn't necesseraly the largest.
Thus, a plutocracy isn't really a correct name for our system. I think it could be argued that the USA is closer to it, as compagnies are allowed to fund parties, wich is illegal in Belgium...

"I was talking about the Dutch Republic. That said, you are still a Plutocracy. Your commercial elite still dominate politics."

The dutch republic was indeed without any participation of Belgium. In fact that's what created our current situation (the Belgian-Dutch border was set that time).
That said, Belgium can hardly be called a plutocracy. There are hardly any large industrials in our politics, or even behind the scenes. Otherwise we wouldn't have such notoriously high taxes on economic activities wink

"The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) adopted aluminium as the standard international name for the element in 1990, but three years later recognized aluminum as an acceptable variant. Hence their periodic table includes both.[56] IUPAC officially prefers the use of aluminium in its internal publications, although several IUPAC publications use the spelling aluminum."
