Topic: Guess the Breakdown!

My semi-truck has a noise. It is a Volvo 780, with a D16 engine.

The noise is a hissing sound behind the fan, centered near the fan.

No it's not the fan, I think, no the belt... it is intact and no wear. It does not happen with key in start position, only when the truck is running.

I did have low oil, but filled it and should not, hopefully be the problem.


I will of course have an idea in the next hour or two, but I figured this could be a good guessing game for the mechanically inclined wink

Oh and I am not losing air pressure and no obvious bad leaks.

1) Are you sure it's a 780? http://tiny.cc/siikb

2) Your radiator may be leaking. Does the hissing sound worsen with a hot engine? Is there a puddle under your parking spot?

no obvious loss of power?  could be a small leak on one of the turbo's airlines

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

Most likely: You're water pump may be about to go out. This is very common.

Power steering pump may be having issues.

Air in the radiator hoses?

It has been determined to be an air leak, location/source yet unknown.


If the truck is out of air, no noise, as it builds air pressure back, noise.


Keep guessing, I go into Volvo tomorrow.

actually, I'm not trying to bully you or cause offence with fat jokes. I'd call anyone else with your political stance a 'fat republican' whether they were size 0 or size 100. 'Fat' in this sense referring to the usual "Fat Cat" backers of the political party.  Sorry if you took it as a personal insult, it wasn't intended as such.
