I thought Pedophilia was a little village in greece.
With many officers choosing rebels site will the regime still survive? I hope the regime falls but I wonder if it ends, what will it become?
Same goes for me. I don't want this kind of gov interference on the internet.
It reminds me of the Arab spring and the Chinese great firewall.
@relish & Jets:
because...?
Are you really surprised? He can do almost anything and get away with it. If he gets another 4 years, and I'm a afraid he will, I'm honestly scared about democracy in the US.
What surprises me is no republican candidate has made it a real issue. It looks so easy to show Obama's mistakes. Far easier as any president in the history of the US.
"Rick Santorum should win, it makes the democrats campaign real easy...."
Even as a left winger you must be completely disappointed in Obama. Obamacare is another word for "pharmacy industry sells a lot of stuff you don't need on behalf of the taxpayers". By accident some things really help the people, but it doesn't justify the waste. Just take a look at what gets payed back and what not and you'll find its not helping the poor much.
He did not keep any of his promises. But he sure as hell did help a small elite that [tsk tsk, LP...] up some of America's greatest companies. The most incompetent managers on the face of the earth still earn many bonuses with taxpayers money because he "saved" their companies. In a normal game, they would go down.
"But remember... Obama is a disaster as well"
True, but he gets away with it. Big successes he had none yet he has a lot of support still. His biggest failure is his economic policy towards the crisis but few rep candidates seem capable to point out the obvious. That is why I think he'll win anyhow.
Honestly it looks a complete disaster. Feels like Obama won already.
Romney and Santorum as temporary victors. Any predictions or favorite candidates?
"Sorry, but you have been listening to the incoherent rabble of those preaching "democratic peace.""
I do make up my own mind about it and I do have my arguments homemade, you know that.
"Russia, for example, is competing with the US for its geopolitical interests, and it has the power to get violent. It has done so in South Ossetia, although I agree with Russia's position. Bush was an jerk, but I'm just using an example."
If USA was not a democratic country it could easily invade Mexico and would have done so. If Russia was a democracy as is the US, it would have been harder to invade Georgia. If you look to geoplitical, political and econ interests, Europe and US should clash as hard as does china and the US, yet they don't. I admit there is a cultural similarity but thats about the only reason.
"but truthfully it is no less democratic than the majority of democracies in the world."
We both agree upon the fact its a dictatorship (or name it whatever) but i.m.o. there are many democracies significantly more democratic still. Democratic for me only means the control system on the gov.
@justinian:
I was reacting to what you said.
"First, Reza Pahlavi can easily be elevated to his rightful place on the Persian throne, so concerning ourselves with establishing a democracy would be unnecessary. Moreover, Iran's economy is perhaps suited to a painless transition to a constitutional monarchy. Second, Iran has a near homogenous Shia population. By contrast, the Iraqi invasion provoked violence in Baghdad's streets due to the combination of political instability and the historical domination of the Sunni minority over the Shia majority."
I was pointing out there is little different between the great social state and a medieval monarchy. Nobility is called communist party. The king is called chairman and wields absolute power. The power structure is one pyramid. A lot of corruption, the people starve.
I was also pointing out most democracies don't compete violently with another during the last decades. Of course you can name a few exceptions or argue about the fact there is no "real" democracy, but the point still stands. Most incidents happen when one of the players involved is not a democracy.
"Unchecked Capitalism is undesirable to live under, as are Totalitarianism and Communism."
Somebody took IA's account!
In any case, we could offer Kimjongson Iran if you want a king so badly. Just remember to give him a fancy name. Chairman is too old fashion so you could name him shah. Else you could go for the cheapest option, democracy, and have a new ally in the region instead of an unstable enemy ruling a another crackpot nation.
@wornstrum:
People I know in your country say different.
"but they are usually in small economic niches (otherwise western media is all over it).
And the lack of news doesn't necessarily mean a coverup, just means that either protests are small, or they aren't happening as frequently as you suspect..."
Most countries in this situation look the same. Nothing happened until after the revolution and then everybody is surprised "we didn't know..." Western media is closely guarded and monitored by the secret police, its hardly a secret!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Wukan
It happens all around the country, but news hardly reaches us. If we hear news, its mainly econ statistics that give a wrong image.
I thought wizards were square by default, but I'm no expert.
be there or be square!
@savinghawaii:
The chinese prefer abortion, indians car accidents, Belgians grenades and the US guns. Maybe its time for a better idea about birth-control?
@reallybig:
I'm the new president of the united states
No offense but that doesn't count on an anonymous forum.
@einstein:
The only useful point when discussing energy resources is the total return on investment, not only the amount of barrels.
To name a few important issues it ignores:
-A barrel of oil has a certain quality. It determines it value.
-The cost in manpower
-The cost in oil barrels to produce a barrel. (if you need 5 barrels to provide 6 you only gain 1)
-The cost in raw materials (to build infrastructure)
-The cost in administration
-The transportation cost (where is it located?)
-The security cost (its a military target for terrorists)
-The potential damage crazy protesters can do. (for nuclear transport in Europe for instance this is a real burden)
for foreign supplies there are additional costs:
-The cost in defense
-The cost in diplomacy
In order to provide solid arguments for you claim, you need to discuss those points as well.
@justinian:
"I once advocated a union between all Western nations. But I am now ambivalent because of idealistic Human rights activists in Europe. Seriously, wtf is their problem attempting to arrest Bush?"
Are you serious? A lot of people in US (or any other nation) want to trial or shoot Bush as well or Sarkozy or Merkel. Same goes for any person in power I suppose. Its not a valid argument against a union. US and EU share most values. I hope we'll notice it before its to late.
"They need a new home, because Scotland and Wales will declare their independence in the next years."
Its so stupid but maybe they do.
Obama is doing what most EU nations did, your friends get rich, make debt. We, the voters, have the power to stop this.
I see it as an ultimate step in a very long process where both blocks grow closer together over many decades, not as an instantaneous moment next month.
All those countries wouldn't have had the problems they have now in a serious union (with the points you said, and I would take it even further). With proper instructions imposed on those countries they are forced to have a healthy budget. We could do all that and it would be a good thing. Nations who don't want it can step out and live in misery.
No it won't happen I know. Stupid western Nations like to bully each other. Good for Russia and China or any of the advocators of totalitarian regimes all over the world.
I know I'm the only one in this forum to advocate a US-EU Union but it makes sense. In Justinian neo-colonial scenarios it makes even more sense, altough I strongly disagree that would be any good.
If EU and US would form an alliance, they can do with their currency whatever they like and f*ck the yuan. China would be forced to become democratic and maybe become an ally instead of an enemy. Their military and economic power would be so overwhelming, we don't have to face another dark age. It would be far easier to combat corruption, drugs, international criminals etc etc. Cost on many things like (military) research would go down hugely.
Economic sanctions imposed on any nation like Syria would be sufficient to bring them to their knees and become democratic. Dangerous powers like Russia would less influential. etc etc.
