TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - A radical cleric called Saturday for the creation of a "Greater Iran" that would rule over the entire Middle East and Central Asia, in an event that he said would herald the coming of Islam's expected messiah.
Ayatollah Mohammad Bagher Kharrazi said the creation of what he calls an Islamic United States is a central aim of the political party he leads called Hezbollah, or Party of God, and that he hoped to make it a reality if they win the next presidential election.
Kharrazi's comments reveal the thinking of a growing number of hard-liners in Iran, many of whom have become more radical during the postelection political crisis and the international standoff over the country's nuclear program. Kharrazi, however, is not highly influential in Iran's clerical hierarchy and his views do not represent those of the current government.
Kharrazi's comments were published Saturday in his newspaper, Hezbollah.
He said he envisioned a Greater Iran that would stretch from Afghanistan to Israel, bringing about the destruction of the Jewish state.
He also said its formation would be a prelude to the reappearance of the Mahdi, a revered ninth-century saint known as the Hidden Imam, whom Muslims believe will reappear before judgment day to end tyranny and promote justice in the world.
"The Islamic United States will be an introduction to the formation of the global village of the oppressed and that will be a prelude to the single global rule of the Mahdi," the Hezbollah newspaper quoted him as saying.
Besides Israel, he said the union would also destroy Shiite Iran's other regional adversaries, whom he called "cancerous tumors." He singled out secular Arab nationalists such as members of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party in Iraq, as well as followers of the austere version of Sunni Islam practiced primarily in Saudi Arabia that is known as Wahabism.
Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Arab nations have watched Iran's growing regional clout with deep concern.
The growing voice of hard-liners like Kharrazi has deepened worries even if it appears unlikely such a divisive figure would win the 2013 presidential election.
Still, even President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that he expects the government which follows his to be "ten times more revolutionary."

Oh sure, just because the guy opens his mouth about government policy and is unmolested, in a country that executes people who protest high prices, doesn't mean the government supports his views or anything.
Give them the bomb! What could go wrong? It's not like we would mind these guys running OPEC, huh?
Oh and I like that the page has a hyperlink for buying persian carpets.
Who's this "we" you refer to Einstein? We need a revolution here first
Nah, let China have em
wants her to want that
debate over til Freelancer reads the 1st 2 Douglas Adams novels
I probably can't for the forseable future X(
damn I should have made that bet too
I wouldnt trust a stranger who did that
I hav been hospitalized for depression, I cannot serve in the military, ever, I have volunteered 3x and been rejected. I can't serve in any police agency. i probably can't own a gun, haven't felt like spending the money to get rejected. I find sales VERY hard, i lack what they call in the industry "brass balls", I can' go through that 20th door like it was the 1st. but the way ahead is not to list what you can't do, because everybdoy has many things they can't or won't do. It's to shrink what you won't do and find what you can do and how to earn with it.
I don't say "excuse" because maybe in your area there isn't enough opportunity, our "compassionate" leaders believe in destroying opportunity. if so the thing is to get out of there. I applied for jobs 100 miles away, I finally got one 45 miles from my house. if things had gone differently I'd have moved, but as it is, its cheaper to stay put and commute 3 hrs a day...so far. I put loyalty to my boss above trying to "flip" into a better job closer, we'll see how long it lasts. I doubt they'll stay in practice 5 more years anyway.
About what?
I fail to see how having children makes it even more necessary to withhold more from minimum wage earners.
All wage earners should keep more of what they earn, just look at the state the country is in. Clearly we need a paycheck to go farther.
Oh and I think we can move this to Politics now.
uhh....
ur finicky
sounds like they're jerks to work for, I guess you're supposed to drive til your truck explodes

i read they hired him because he was like an elder brother to many american players
so he knows their weaknesses
Chriss' response>
You've tried to argue that poverty could be abolished if people were allowed to keep more of their minimum wage.<<<
Uh, yeah, saving to buy education is one way up.
>>You do know that some people cannot save anything they earn cuz they happen to live from paycheck to paycheck, barely scraping by?<<
Yeah I'm one of them right now.
>> Thats my problem with republicans and how they view and treat poor people. You think that we are all the same. You think that we are all lazy, we dont wanna work and that we squander our money on drugs and other bullshit. <<
I believe most people who abuse drugs, end up on relief. I believe most people who refuse to work, end up on relief. I don't think most people on relief do drugs or don't want to work--and that majority uses relief as a steppign stone. People don't linger on relief unless they let themselves go blooey.
>>Who the F do you think are anyways judging us and stereotyping us? Ive said this before, and ill say it again.<<
maybe I think i'm you...
>>REPUBLICANS LACK COMPASSION FOR ANYONE EXCEPT OTHER RICH FOLKS AND CORPORATIONS!!
Do you think we like being poor? Do you think this is fun for us or something? What about the middle class worker who loses his job due to layoffs and is struggling to feed his family?<<
Right now govt is doing its damnedest to avoid a recovery that helps any "rich" folks or corporations. How's that working out for blue-collar guys? Read the paper, how's it helping to have 1 in 10 adults out of work??
>>Do you blame him for that?<<
Where does blame come in?
>> Should we just tell him "too bad! get an education and deal with it!"<<
NOBODY is gonna get that guy a job but him. NOBODY is gonna bang on his door and hand him his newspaper and a job.
>>Chris: The statement you made about poor people, i take personally. its insulting and very ignorant on your part. Id like to see how YOU wouild react to being laid off and being poor. I wonder if you would still be singing the same tune.<<
Well what was that statement
>>You've tried to argue that poverty could be abolished if people were allowed to keep more of their minimum wage.
Uh, yeah, saving to buy education is one way up.<<
Is the opposite true, that people should not get more of their wages? How does that help?
I've been down and out. I took a $400/month paycut this year and if gas prices go up 25% I might lose this job. It took me 3 months to find one and I might lose my apartment if I lose this one. So what? Is that a federal problem? I worked 50 hours a week AND went to "night" school before work, 2 nights a week, for 3 years to be a paralegal. I scrimped and saved to put $500 on my credit card every 90 days to buy 1 class. Everybody I know finished that course in 2 years and it took me 3. Boo Hoo! I couldn't borrow from the government again becuase it doesn't cover professional education. boo hoo! They wouldn't even stop the clock on my student loans while I went to school. Boo hoo! And you know what, I don't really earn more money now. Boo Hoo! Either I BUY MORE EDUCATION and take a special test course and get to put letters after my name, and get a better paying gig, or I can BUY MORE EDUCATION and learn to espeek espanol or korean and get a better paying gig (but riskier, because I think they want a bilingual paralegal so bad because I'd be giving legal advice) I don't dance and I can't lift cargo and sales makes me sad within a few hours. Boo Hoo! Maybe I gotta move to a different state, one that doesn't try to share the wealth, boo hoo!
How is that YOUR problem? Or Barack Obama's problem? It's MY problem, and guess who's gonna have to overcome or put up with it?
Lemme keep what I earn and I'll go farther. I think that's true of anybody and that is all you asked--would poverty go away if people kept more of what they EARN? HELL YEAH! either classes or tools, or sharper clothes, or more gas to keep merching, or pay off credit cards. plenty helps
are your objections part of the file?
"if you can't truck it,..."
you got a seinfeld show out of it
looking at Ground Zero and New Orleans, maybe having the feds ignore you is the best path to recovery
we got a plague of illegal immigrants...
dpenguins is a real lawyer
are you employee or contractor? I think you should talk to the dept of labor in the state where you work, or call the DOT. You want your record cleared, right?
why would you sue if they broke govt rules? what do you get out of it?
