Stop the presses~! The Russians have come up with a pretty snazzy way to deal with that oil spill: nuke it all! Why waste time freaking out when you can unleash the power of mass-to-energy conversion, and let Mr. Atom clean up the mess in no time at all?

A 80% succesrate means there's a pretty large chance that it fails and leaves us with an even bigger catastrophe :\
It would be interesting to see exactly the results of Russian use of the cleanup method. Contrary to WFS' claim, it might be possible that there wouldn't be "an even bigger catastrophe" (if the reason for the catastrophe being bigger is that you just nuked the area, why wouldn't there be radiation problems in the first 4 instances?)
Its an idea but I'm not smart enough to know whether it is good or not.
Well nuke would be limited to a small region, small impact. Quick radiation dispersal also.
Only worry would be opening a fault to the oil, then it could not be capped.
Flint, you generally can't open faults to oil... Oil spills are generally spills from shipwrecks, not loose petroleum from underground.

A nuclear detonation would fuse the rocks together.
The oil would be trapped under a layer of glass-like material.
Nature handles radiation better than oil.

1: As I said, oil spills are usually caused by shipwrecks, not leaks from below the surface.
2: Oil floats to the surface of the water. There's no rocks above them which you could fuse together.
They aren't proposing to get rid of all the oil on the surface, plugging the leak underground would be great. Then keep burning the surface oil until it becomes safe.

or hit it with an asteroid and the oil would be vaporized into plasma
Hitting that place with widespread incendiary bombs would probably do the trick if the explosion doesn't actually fling tiny oil particulates all over the place, the science is out on that. Higher yield stuff can never be approved in time.

Oil seeps naturally as well Zarf.
Notably during a few Earthquakesd (cannot find old linkd) some large nature caused spills have happened, from untapped oil deposits.
A fault in my rxample would be a rift, hole, or other breakage which would result in new leaking on a higher scale
