Re: UK general election: The spot a policy game

ah..guess we sorta have the same for the House of Representatives, which is supposed to be apportioned by population BUT has been limited to 435 members despite a 100 million spurt in population...so Wyoming has 1 rep and california has 52

Re: UK general election: The spot a policy game

Well the US is different in that it spans a significant portion of a continent so accountability of an individual representative to a geographical area may be more significant than on a small archipelago in the North Atlantic. I think there will be bigger differences in the concerns of people in Wyoming and California than there will be between people in rural Cumbria and London. The US also has more checks and balances whereas the UK is governed by an unrepresentative Commons and a completely unelected Lords.

I do find US presidential elections strange though - why isn't it just one voter one vote so that everyone's vote counts the same?

Re: UK general election: The spot a policy game

It prevents a guy becoming president by exploiting regional differences.  Currently we have insane hippies on the west coast, rednecks down south, rocky mountain states think wildnerness could have some factories, the midwest likes high price food and the northeast thinks it's Too Big To Fail. (250 years ago it was factories up north, slave plantations down south, and yahoos in fur and leather trying to steal all the indian land for Jesus.) All these groups could be isolated and destroyed by a majority of the popular vote.  Giving Iowa 13 electoral votes out of 270 needed to win makes that risky for a demagogue.

Re: UK general election: The spot a policy game

Guiliani tried to fo a popular upset. He campaigned in only ONE state during the primaries. Florida has a winner takes all approach to their votes in Primaries.

A truly good campaign in California if popular vote would have the same effect, and remove the representation from the rest of the States.

Why poll Oregon, they have only 1 million votes, why Ohio, it has only....

This gives value to all area's of a vast continent wink

Conservatives will win in an anti-Labour backlash.
Even though almost everyone knows that only one party is being realistic.
No one will have the spine to vote for who they really need.
And the country will be "boned"

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

we're headed for collapse, we're printing dollars to buy treasury bonds at lower interest rates.

A spokesman says they won't but they've been doing it this year. The Fed did not buy six-month paper last week.

Tories should do an ad where david tennant materializes onstage of a 3way debate and addresses cameron as "mr prime minister"

Re: UK general election: The spot a policy game

Gordon Brown has been going round calling bigoted old ladies bigots. I don't really know why that is a scandal.

Anyway, election tomorrow. It looks like it is going to be a farce where Labour come third in votes but have most seats. No overall majority. Lib dems get a sniff of power and sell out on their beliefs to form a coalition with Labour. David Milliband will be Prime Minister. The ignorant majority of Brits who have only just heard of Nick Clegg a week ago say "who?". New election within months, Conservatives win a landslide having steered clear of the farsical coalition government. The world ends in a swirling David Cameron shaped ball of fire.

Re: UK general election: The spot a policy game

I think there are a lack of Brits on this forum!

But, you are also correct. It was interesting for a couple of days about three weeks ago. The longer it has gone on though, the more the main parties all just look the same.

I don't actively want any of the main parties, but I dislike the Conservatives the most. None of the parties represent my views. The Lib Dems did at the start of the campaign but have become horribly muddled on many issues while they try to please everybody.
