Topic: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

This is the beginning of an ongoing series I want to address, and hopefully spark awareness within the forum.

Although we're in the Politics forum, this thread isn't about political issues.  Rather, I want to discuss the ways and methods by which we engage each other in the Politics community.

Before I engage in particular issues, I want to begin with some preliminary questions:

Please think of these honestly and give them careful thought...

1: Why do you come to the politics forum?
2: What would the ideal politics poster come to this forum in order to do?
3: What are the goals of a forum related to political issues?  What is the forum attempting to achieve?  Hell, what does communication about political issues hope to achieve?
4: What do you contribute to the Politics forum through your presence here?

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

I come here to pass time when I am bored. Leave an anecdote and hope people laugh or become outraged. The main reason that I post here, is that this is one of the few places where I won't get punched in the face for my political views.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Actually, let me edit this:

Three questions to answer:

1: Why do you come to the politics forum?
2: What would the ideal politics poster come to this forum in order to do?
3: What are the goals of a forum related to political issues?  What is the forum attempting to achieve?  Hell, what does communication about political issues hope to achieve?

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

I come to laugh at all the people who are so full of themselves that they believe people are actually listening to them. I rarely read posts, and if I do it's only the first one. I only open topics with interesting titles or big likely made up words such as "metadebating".

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

I'm 23 and have been coming here since I was 15-16. It's a habit, really.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Ok, Justinian... what do you think you contribute?

What this crakca said.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

I've been posting here, on and off, for about 6 1/2 years. I suppose coming here is some sort of compulsion. I don't know that I actually contribute anything, except in cases where I can use my expertise and personal knowledge to be an iconoclast of ignorance and misinformation.

I'm here to chew fat, and kick ass.  And i'm all out of ass to kick.

=^o.o^= When I'm cute I can be cute.  And when I'm mean, I can be very very mean.  I'm a cat.  Expect me to be fickle.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Zarf,

I occasionally tear up people's stupid Logic, when I am motivated to, and/or I offer an alternative and darker view of politics and philosophy.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

1: Why do you come to the politics forum?

I come because I am worried about my nation, the ignorance of the world, and I see corruption on such scales as to boggle the mind.

2: What would the ideal politics poster come to this forum in order to do?

The ideal poster would be one seeking education and knowledge and/or giving education and knowledge.

3: What are the goals of a forum related to political issues?  What is the forum attempting to achieve?  Hell what does communication about political issues hope to achieve?

My hope is to reach some people, stop them from being drones. By showing individual aspects are broken, or that the whole is broken for failed ideologies.

4: What do you contribute to the Politics forum through your presence here?

I am life to this forum. I am the only remaining true poster to it, and the only ex-elected political figure who is actively posting, the only true politician on here.

I made this forum from the emptiness of no posts, and sadly I think it dies when I leave.

In this forum, I am the Alpha and the Omega, second only to God and the Trinity above who knows all but never posts (here?).

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Flint, you are so full of shit... so so full of shit...

Also to answer Zarf's questions

1: Why do you come to the politics forum?
I started coming many moons ago on the grounds that there would be discussion and debate about real life issues and concepts, however over the years that has changed to laughing at the rediculous ideas people put forward and the closemindedness of many of the participants, many appear to have no real world experiance despite what they say sometimes...

2: What would the ideal politics poster come to this forum in order to do?
Ideally a poster would come to discuss, debate and shape the concept of the world. People would be openminded and subject to comprimise and changes of oppionion with the application of ordered reason and logic, such that a topic being debated/discussed could have a definite end, not a flame war. Even if the end was that two sides acknowledged the validity of the opposite argument, but agreed that they were both equally valid.

3: What are the goals of a forum related to political issues?  What is the forum attempting to achieve?  Hell, what does communication about political issues hope to achieve?
A debate and discussion on an issue to explore the various viewpoints and thoughts on that concept using logic, reason and personal experiance. An end point would be as above, a victor, a comprimise or a respected truce.

4: What do you contribute to the Politics forum through your presence here?
Currently? Not much, though no one here contributes anything, save maybe Zarf. I respect the idea that Zarf is trying to reach and agree, as such I try and contribute positivly in things that Zarf has tried to steer in a good direction...

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Also it's always funny to see the size of Flint's ego.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

1: Why do you come to the politics forum?

Learn something about politics.

2: What would the ideal politics poster come to this forum in order to do?

Learn something about politics.

3: What are the goals of a forum related to political issues?

Provide a venue for people to learn something about politics.

What is the [politics] forum attempting to achieve?

Attract people who want to learn something about politics.

Hell, what does communication about political issues hope to achieve?

In general, communication about political issues aims to either facilitate change  or maintain status quo.

4: What do you contribute to the Politics forum through your presence here?

I contribute ideas.

Yeah, wow, now that I think about it I've been coming here since I was 26, and now I am 33.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

30 topics a page, 36 pages. Total topics is about 1260. Of that I am responsible for 211 topics. I also contributed to 18 pages worth of political discussions.

Since I left there had been very few posts at all and fewer topics. Since my return... well count for yourself how active it hsas become.

Without me, without JA, without Black_wing this forum does nothing.

Eliminate Black_Wing and my topics and 400ish topics go poof. Of the remaining I fully expect 100 others to be from that one time super supporter of Obama (forgot his name), 150ish to be from Chris and the rest to be from about three dozen others.

There is nothing left when I leave, there was nothing left after I previously left, and this forum does not do anything anymore.

Nope, when he left 1/3 the activity went soon after.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Flint, you are mistaken... 18 pages of threads by you? How much is actually contributing to discussion and debate in this community as opposed to hardly being answered or only existing to provide grounds for a flame war? I would say about 1%  of your threads provide any intelligent debate... so whats that? 18% of a page of possibly useful threads? I would not consider that to be the stone that the politics community is based on... Normally it is the field upon which the trolls do battle with great flaming swords... If anything the reason why there is less posts when you are not around is that the trolls don't come out so much...

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

@Flint: You've gone for QUANTITY over quality again, that's their problem wink

1: Why do you come to the politics forum?
I come to the politics forum to watch people "discuss". Sometimes I post things I think may start a discussion, but that rarely goes the way I thought it would. Sometimes I think that is because I have a point and people wantn to blunt that point.
Mostly I come to gape at the egos so massive they have their own gravitational pull, at the house of cards balanced on its end, and to giggle as you all go ape[poo] at Decimus AGAIN because you STILL don't get him.

2: What would the ideal politics poster come to this forum in order to do?
To do things like: To draw attention to the crap job President X is doing and discuss how he could do better, to discuss the reasons behind war Y and what is happening in war Y and the end of war Y, to DISCUSS the wrongs of society, the things that trouble us...
...Ancient Greek stuff.

3: What are the goals of a forum related to political issues?  What is the forum attempting to achieve?  Hell, what does communication about political issues hope to achieve?
Intelligent Discussion. Agreement. Broadening of horizons. Basically anything other than feeding each other hemlock (pressing issues, VCPR).

4: What do you contribute to the Politics forum through your presence here?
I am a bastion of blunt..... anyone remember how that went?

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Zarf here is respect

Two posts, the last two.

One a direct attack.

The other a joke and/or plausible viewpoint. I have not decided which vein to take it on, but Fokkers post does not disrespect me, while fools is a directed attack.

Re: Metadebating, Part 1: Why are you here?

Flint's right on this.  Seriously, you_fool, wtf?  You can't really stand behind any sort of change in the system when you perpetuate the flaming in the status quo in ONE OF THE VERY THREADS TRYING TO ACHIEVE THAT CHANGE, WHERE YOU ADVOCATE IT!  You're only helping fuel Flint's moves to destroy the credibility of the move.
