Topic: Mr and Mrs George Warson European Tour, Xmas 2010

Hello!

The soon to be Mrs and I will be coming to England in mid december essentially to visit family on that side of the world before we get married, because many of them will be unable to come as far as NZ for the occasion for various reasons.

On the downside, it'll be the middle of winter, but it is the only time we can get 5 weeks off work to make the massive expense worthwhile.
So I'm fishing for ideas about what we can go and see/do while we're about.

We'll be in England visiting family till New Years, and are considering going up to Scotland and/or across to Ireland if time allows.  We will travel by train most likely from England and go through France, probably Belgium and Netherlands and into Germany.  At that point we really only intend to get to the south coast of Spain where her parents live, and would like to go via Italy and the south of France by train.  After that we will probably have to fly back to London to get our return flight back here.
Wondering whether it makes sense to fly from Germany to Rome and come up the coast from there.  Given we will only have 3 weeks from New Years, thats a lot of traveling, and we aren't entirely sure how much we can fit in in the timeframe.
Obviously we have only the most basic outline of where we're going, so it's all quite subject to change, and this is where the good people of IC come in.

Knowing that many of you folks live in the area, I'd like to stop by and say hi to those I know well.
Primo, I'm looking at you.
Not entirely sure who else wants to become part of the trip, it has been a while since I was about and most of the folks I knew well aren't about regularly now.
But if the suggestions on things we must see are good, it'll help us plan our trip better at least.  If there should be accomodation offered (or good suggestions on where we might get some) that'd also be good, as we aren't exactly wealthy smile

This used to be the best signature ever, but after several years, a mod noticed it had a swear in it, and removed it.  I am happy to see they are paying attention.

George Warson my bestest buddy tongue
Europe is vast, its at least slightly bigger than Australia. So vast, in fact, that you cannot see it all in 5 weeks. But you can certainly try!

I think the planning of plane tickets, train tickets, and coach/bus routes for this is massive! Pouring over maps, timetables and assessing costs.
I might suggest that you arrive in England on 22 or 23 December. But see a bit of Europe first. Frankfurt and Amsterdam (also Paris) are major air hubs. So you could start with Amsterdam, Bruges, and Brussels, before Eurostaring up to London. This gets you do to 9 or 10 days in the UK. Travel this time of year will be at a premium and I believe your family is South Coast [nr Brighton]? So getting anywhere will be a nightmare. I am sure your family can take you to Canterbury or Salisbury.

From London either train to Paris, or fly to Rome.
[I would love to suggest Prague or Budapest, but time is of the essence]. From Rome you are heading to Spain. By now you are 3 weeks into the 5. I do not know train routes but think this will be slow... maybe a budget airline from Rome to southern France will make better sense, and then train from France to Spain.
In your final few days, you should go from Spain to Paris for 2 nights... and then from Paris go back to Amsterdam/Frankfurt to fly home.

Fly back to Australia via Khartoum and I will boil you up some rice and slaughter my sheep.

U should check if u can get cheap flights. It sometimes happens you can get inter european flights for like 10

Re: Mr and Mrs George Warson European Tour, Xmas 2010

hey hey warsie

first of all, congratulations on getting engaged!

also, you are more than welcome to come over to leuven, and meet up with the people here (i'm thinking about syeknom, amok, TU, eltara, me, etc.) the only problem is that the first two weeks of january usually are exams here...
if it isn't in the middle of our exams, i am pretty sure i can even offer you a discrete place to sleep, with a lock on the door to prevent nightly syeknom visits.

as for things to go see, i know bruges is indeed very worthwhile, however not that easy to reach. possibly you can get wfs (arnor/silly belgian guy) to show you around a little bit or so, i hear he knows the place well)

other than that, it depends what you are into. i don't have to tell you amsterdam is a must-see. personally i am not a fan of antwerp and brussels, seeing as you don't have too much time, i wouldn't waste time on those cities.

Thanks for that smile

We've booked flights and now going through the fun process of planning, and then editing out bits according to how much money we don't have.

Will try and be in Belgium between xmas and new years for a few days.  It is the next couple of weeks that is proving more difficult to plan.
Primo, I'll email you at some point in the next 6 months when we've finalised plans and booked some more things.

Mace!
We're going through Dubai, so your sheep will have to wait for another day.

If you're making the trip all the way I would definitely try to be in Edinburgh for new years (or hogmanay as the scots inexplicably call it). Book accomodation early!

Let me know date and times transitting Dubai, and I will make sure to avoid the airport. It is the most awful airport ever. You expect glitz  - but the toilets are filthy. There's no free seats. Its a long concourse with the same shops and restaurants ad nauseum.

Get arrested! It saves you on hotel and you come away knowing a lot more about the country than you would staying with a guided tour
