Topic: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

After much fear mongering H1N1 has proven to be a flop, both in its effects and in how well our government ran its first vaccine effort in forever.

71million vaccines are to be destroyed soon.

What a waste of taxpayer money.

How do we know the money and vaccines given didn't cause H1N1 to be a flop?  Remember, gauging the effects of prevention methods is much more difficult than reactionary policies.

The vaccines were two months late, so yes I am right.   tongue

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

Two months late for what?  Timeline, perhaps?

Besides, remember that there were plenty of other safeguard programs aside from vaccines in effect (much improved warning+containment systems, thanks to the previous Avian flu scare, implemented during the Bush years)

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

ya what a shame more people didn't die eh.

Pretty sure anyone could come up with a list of more wasted resources. What would you have suggested play the waiting game and hope?

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

Several thousand people died world wide caused by complications from H1N1.  I was bedridden for four day straight, and so were members of my own family.  We didn't receive a vaccination because there wasn't any to be had where I'm located.  If it turns out to become a seasonal item, those vaccines could still be needed.  Because a virus doesn't just disappear, it mutates into something new.

@Key

If the flu mutates into something new, those vaccines are useless.  tongue

flint is also the 1st person to blame the gouverment if they had not bought those vaccines, should it have become a serious pandamic

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

goddamit wtf is the US gubmint fighting pandemics FOR?

a virus that killed 2/3 of every nation would leave 100 million Americans in America staring down 400 million chinese

but those chinese would be surrounded by 800 million corpses and that wouldn't end well for them

30 years ago that was called "Serving the national interest"

@Zarf

Polio vaccine for Polio.  Red Fever vaccination for Red Fever.  H1N1 vaccine for H1N1.  Though if the stupid thing mutates to H1N2, that still doesn't mean the H1N1 vaccine isn't going to have an effect.  It can still help the immune systems of the young and elderly.

@dirty:
flint is right. It was a huge waste of money. Speculating on what he could have said is just lame even if it is true. Stick to the debate instead of playing it personal.

my opinion:
The gov does not intervene on this scale when it concerns a normal flue. It was obvious long before the big outbreak started that this flue was far less dangerous as the normal one, and that you couldn't prevent it from spreading. It was a stupid waste of money.

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

@Key

Nope.  For the flu, the category defines a broad group of viruses, not a specific virus.  "H1N1" in itself doesn't point to any specific flu virus, but instead denotes a subcategory within the flu categories.  Ever notice that every year, companies have to make a new version of the flu virus?  That's because the virus does mutate every year, and each mutation renders the old virus obsolete.

Plus, even if there was some, but not a full benefit from using old vaccines to stop next year's flu outbreak, wouldn't you risk putting people into a false sense of security in that they already received a flu shot for X season (the old virus which, in your world, would be presented as being helpful), possibly risking some people believing they wouldn't need the new vaccine that would come out when the next flu comes out?

@Little Paul

How was any of what you're asserting "obvious?"

"obvious" that nowhere on TV, or in our own lives, did we see or hear or read about anything that looked remotely like "The Stand"

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

Hmm... maybe because when a virus first shows up, it doesn't start its life out by infecting 50 million people?

It did infect over 50 million, and we're like coughcoughsnortsneezeugh so what

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

Yes... remember there were containment methods put into place.  How can you argue that there's no correlation between the safeguards put in place and the fact that the disease didn't spread further than you guys thought it would?

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

I wasn't contained, I got the flu, no big deal.  How were you contained?

And since humans were the vector, no other containments mattere

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

@zarf:
the extreme low death toll rate right from the start is consider a strong indicator. It wasn't "contained". It spread like a normal virus.

edit "I consider"

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

@Zarf

So your saying the flu virus is actually created by companies then released into the general population?  Isn't that illegal?  And then they create a vaccination for the flu which they then sell?

You know...i'm beginning to believe those conspiracy people are right about corporate america trying to kill us.

@Chris

remember those kids that were quarentined in China and were sent back, not being allowed into the country, because they tested positive for H1N1?

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

I loved national federal employees misusing the words "epidemic" and "pandemic" and not getting fired or even mocked for it. These people hold well-paying jobs and don't even know the definitions of basic words involved in their business--and use them anyway.

If I was some health director in charge of warning the public about risks and clearly lied about ["misstated"] the information I had to share, I'd deserved to be fired if not imprisoned. That shit is serious.

Avian Flu.... so scary... no effect except drain on resources.

There are dozens of flus going around and for each of them the same common sense rules.

Re: H1N1 the disaster that didn't

There is a track record of US health care authorities over reacting to health care risks. They do the same thing with HIV, which is so ridiculous because it's hard for first worlders to be infected from unprotected vaginal intercourse (1/2000) and only 1-2% of the population has it. Yet whenever we hear about STDs, we hear about HIV. ROFL. They should be more worried about herpes or HPV. Idiots.
