Topic: A question for Liberals

A tree in a neighborhood is in danger.  The type of tree is unimportant but assume it is fairly large.  The danger is unimportant.

A group, person, government, or something else says they can save the tree.

How much is to much to save it?

$100?
$1,000?
$10,000?
$100,000?
$1,000,000?
Something larger?

Or why not sell the tree for lumber, firewood, or pulp, then use the profits used to order a new tree?

What if it is 100 trees?  Or a thousand?  Ten thousand?

I realize this is more than one question in a way but the leading questions come to this question...

Why save them than use and replace them?

I'm taking the trees are a metaphore for people?

This forum is stupid.

Re: A question for Liberals

Nope,  this is a real issue regarding trees in the United States.

I expect Chris to get RILED UP on this topic,  lol.

Re: A question for Liberals

Trees are good?

So... investing in them is wise till a certain point?

This forum is stupid.

Re: A question for Liberals

Yup, the answer can be that simple!

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Re: A question for Liberals

Save it from what, what is the current function of the tree (yes trees have functions it's weird I know), could the new tree take over said functionality.

This is all stuff that factors in to whether saving the tree is worth it.  If the tree's purpose is simply to look pretty then sure chop the sucker down.  If the tree, or trees, is/are integral to soil stability that's different.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Re: A question for Liberals

DPS, a full grown tree holds more water and absorbs a lot more carbondioxide than a sapling. This is exactly why an old tree has some value. In most cases, more than the timber you can get out of it. And that justifies it to be saved, till a certain amount of money is reached, of course.

Re: A question for Liberals

Ehm, never cut down old trees,

Plant 100 trees when you cut down one tree...

idk... i`d say 50% of the surface of earth(not water) should be covered with trees

just an opinion

trees eat co2 and spit out o2

the classical liberal would probablly say something like
"let the tree save himself.. everyone is responsible for himself"...

Re: A question for Liberals

What do you think we use 2x4 and 2x6 studs in walls for?  To hold up the wall of course.
And what about those cedar shingles on your roof?  Why to keep out the rain of course.
And what do we send out to the ocean to go after fish and crab and such?  Why they're fishing boats made from wood.
And what do we put in that fireplace to keep us warm on cold winter nights?  Why it's firewood.

A tree in my mom's back yard fell down because it's roots had rotted away and/or nibbled upon by underground rodents and insects.  It fell over and literally smashed my sister's trampoline in half.  Sometimes you can not save, what you can not save.  Last time I ever seen a tree "saved" was because it's so called historical significance.  It's historical significance was it's age and that was it.  We spent a good fourty grand to dig it up, with intact roots to move to another location.   Within a decade it died.  It was considered a fourty grand piece of firewood after that.

Re: A question for Liberals

harvest the tree to get money, plant 3 new trees for $.3. If someones attached to this tree well then..

Re: A question for Liberals

Conservationists can help the environment by planting new trees, after the older trees are cut down.  And we don't cut all the older trees at the same time, just only a coupld hundred acres over a period of a whole decade.  We're not like Oklahoma and their stupid dust bowl.  We learned a lesson from their stupidity.

Re: A question for Liberals

Like said earlier in this toppic:

Depends on the situation. Some trees prevent what key described above or are important for soil stability. Some people plant trees against excessive noise. Some trees might be important because of tourism. Some trees might hide a nuclear silo big_smile. So some trees are more valuable as others.

I think wood industry might cause increase in trees in total if you do it right. In that case I'm not against chopping trees at all.

But to answer the question for the O2 the main thing that matters is the total quantity not one tree. The best way to achieve this however goes beyond my knowledge.

Re: A question for Liberals

@ Little Paul....how did you find out about our nuclear silo's being hidden by State Forestry Services?  That was supposed to be Top Secret!

Actually Oregon does screw up at the times we cut the trees.  We cut during summer, and replant...unfortunately we get a LOT of rainfall in winter time, along with Washington state which does cause...mud slides near major highways and outskirts of several major cities.
