Topic: British Armed Forces?

Anyone serving here?
Just curious because I'm thinking of joining and I want to know what I'd have to be able to do in the actual fitness test, like run X miles in Z minutes whilst carrying Y weight, do this many press ups... also what are the warm up/cool down excercises.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: British Armed Forces?

this is what happens to recruits who nag the Sarge about not being properly warmed-up yikes

Re: British Armed Forces?

you joining cuz you d be sure of housing and food and internets tongue?

till the end of time..

Re: British Armed Forces?

Run a 2 mile in 15 minutes, 50 pushups, 40 situps, able to carry 100 pounds for 20 miles, and thats for the lowest of soldiers. If your going to join an elite unit, expect this to double, and the run to be in combat boots with 50 pounds.

Also weekly most units run 5 or 10 miles. Some units, like my unit, have a monthly 15 mile formation run. Some units also have unusual marching requirements, such as the Infantry on Hawaii have to walk the whole periphery of the main Island (not an easy march).

Other requirements: Following orders regardless of how you feel about them (excepting crimes), perfect hygiene, and the ability to stay up for 27 hours straight.

Re: British Armed Forces?

i am learning about public services in college.

you have to do a 2.4km (1.5mile) run in under 10mins (for male)
same again but in under 11:30 mins for females.

60 press ups in 2 mins. (same for men and women)
60 sit ups in 2 mins. (same for men and women)

general fitness  you have to keep above these standards. you will be tested every 6 months and if you aren't keeping up to these then you get put on a 2month program where you will get up to standard.

these requirements aren't just for foot soldiers, but universal across the british army, navy/marines/raf and other services are different of course. but whether your a foot soldiers or in comms or an engineer you got to be able to adhere to these.

Cool.

I dunno if it is still in the recruiting guides anymore... world has changed, but in the 90's they still had a 100% turn away of Communist types..

Re: British Armed Forces?

the running is 1.5miles in 10min and 30 sec for infantry units it is also 50 press ups and 50 sit ups in 2 minutes.
u must be able to do a min of 5 chin ups i believe it is and hold a ammo container for at least 2 minutes with out lowering it. there is also a 50 metre jerry can walk (cant remember the times) with 25litres in each jerry can.

Once u pass all this u will be sent of for basic training u wont be thrown in the deep end wat so ever they will build ur fitness levels up for u.

Before u leave basic u must be able to TAB (tactical advance to battle) 8 miles in 2 hours carrying 45lbs including webbing and helmet. THIS DOES NOT COUNT UR DRINKING WATER THOUGH! at the end of the TAB if u are below the weight u will fail and will repeat it again another day.

This is for infantry but as would be expected if u go for another unit u will drop weight in tabs and will get more time for the runs etc etc.

This is from wat i had to do when i joined the army in 2002 so may of changed a little but i doubt it. if u want more info just say and ill be glad to give it. and if need be ill get hold of some of my army mates to hook me up with the latest tests for u big_smile

Re: British Armed Forces?

back in my country, it is compulsory for all males to serve the army when they turn 18. it includes 2 years of full time army, and on standby for another 10 years or so. good experience and an excellent choice to stay fit and healthy. i would have continued and signed on as a full time army regular, but i had other passion in life.

i believe the standards are roughly the same across the board. 2.4km under 9min30sec and a min of 10 chinups gives you a gold standard fitness award and a cool 400dollars. lol.

Re: British Armed Forces?

damn Hon Brits dont get anything for doing well except maybe them saying u should of tryed harder lol.

although i like wat ur country does bout making them go in the army its like britain had years and years ago National Service would stop alot of things that happen these days as it would give them morales.

i gotta be on the reserve list for 5 yrs which aint bad so they can call me anytime in the nxt like 5yrs after that i tell them to blow me hahaha

Re: British Armed Forces?

hahaha im excused for 5 years because of my studies and after that im 15 years into the reserve list. which will mean i have to keep fit until im over 40 yearsold!!! wow that takes alot of discipline. hahaha but of course the passing standard of fitness drops as you grow older. fair enough and i can still take 400 dollars every year if i manage a gold standard everytime.

Re: British Armed Forces?

I can't imagine the entry criteria are too strict. The point is that they train you up to the fitness level they want. If the entrance level of fitness required was too high then they would never get any recruits.

p.s. why don't you join the fire brigade or drive an ambulance instead?

tweehonderd graden, dat is waarom ze me mr. fahrenheit noemen, ik reis aan de snelheid van het licht, ik ga een supersonische man van u maken

Re: British Armed Forces?

fire brigade is very hard to get in to so many people go for it and very few get taken on due to spaces being available, same as the ambulance both service both can only have a certain amount of people wgich is crap sad
and it is true they will train you up to what is required but you do have to be at a certain fitness before they will even touch you. even get the gd old docter doing the gd old trousers down and cough routine tongue

Re: British Armed Forces?

there is much respect in America for singapore, the country that beat the shit out of that jackass kid who keyed a car in Singapore and then expected the US govt to save his ass

btw a year or so later he was arrested for theft in the USA again.  But he didn't mess with Singapore anymore, so your system worked where ours failed

Re: British Armed Forces?

i guess. things are pretty strict here, we have to compromise a little freedom to get security.

it beats a system where "who keyed my car" must remain an eternal mystery cause the kid with the paint-stained key wasn't told to hire a lawyer before confessing

Re: British Armed Forces?

Oh and despite what is mentioned above... the Army is currently at full manning... which means that they recruit less and can be more picky.  Think long and hard about what job you want to do and which regiment you want to join.  My regiment won't be recruiting again until Sep 2010 as we currently have 132 extra blokes!

Also if you have the grades seriously consider commissioning as an Officer rather than going in as a Private.

You're best bet is to talk to an Army Careers advisor.

Minimum Physical standards are:

Males
under 30: 1.5miles in 10mins 30secs  (Ideally you want between 8:45-9:30 any slower and you'll be struggling during training.  Sub 9mins is usually regarded as being 'fit' sub 8:15 is 'very fit' and sub 7:45 is maybe 1 in every 200 soldiers.

Press ups: Total in 2mins - 44 Minimum.  Aim to be able to do 60. 70-80 'fit', 80-95 'very fit' 95+ again rare but does happen.

Sit ups: Total in 2mins - 60 Minimum.  Aim to be able to do at least 75... I've seen guys score over 120! however they had really bad technique and any strict PTI will stand over you and just repeat ONE ONE ONE ONE ONE until you correct it then he might change to TWO "keep you fecking elbows in" TWO - THREE etc

The fitter you can get the better.  The best fitness program for potential soldiers British army wise is probably on the Royal Marines Website, failing that there is a book called Fighting Fit by Adrian Weales that is just training programs and guidance on military techniques etc.

Good luck! big_smile
