It's impossible to grow a particular human organ at this moment, but if it's possible: why the hell not? You'll be regenerating from a certain condition out of your body. A stem cell is not an embryo.
Genitally engineered babies are, to a certain degree, not really a problem either, imo. Although, it must be added that manipulations, apart those made for medical reasons, should not determine the child's future.

I wasn't agreeing either. You seem to question my morality, and thus I must conclude we're not having a discussion on the mutual respect I thought we were having..
I thought that genetically engineered humans without thoughts, memory etc. would fall under those whose future is set and limited by the genetical changes.

Re: U.S on the Verge of Healthcare Reform

Thing is, an embryo is not human, so who cares what modifications are done to it under your stance there...

Under my stance, they are human (though I will concede that birth control is not abortion... pill or day after, no problems to me) and therefore deserve protections.

Re: U.S on the Verge of Healthcare Reform

You're assuming that "killing" an embryo is worse than modifying it, and that I'd therefore tolerate it. But that's a whole different matter.

no, they're assuming that you dont recognize the embryo as a living thing. you have something against modifying non-living things to benefit human beings?

Re: U.S on the Verge of Healthcare Reform

I don't object to embryo manipulation. It can provide a lot of biological information we can hardly access otherwise. Although, when it's intended to become an actual person (we've surpassed the abortion issue here), the genome must only be manipulated for medical reasons.

Re: U.S on the Verge of Healthcare Reform

well, maybe the end products wouldnt be human to get around that.... designing the baby to lack a heart, and need a mechanical one, making it miss the definition of human; and then slaves dont need to be good thinkers, technology could probably create a computer to replace their brain, which would also negate the need to educate them and then the entire world could have an army of subhuman slaves derived from embryos.  or simply modifying the dna just enough not fit what falls for human dna..

in the US at least, illegalizing abortion was deemed unconsitutional because it violates peoples right to privacy...  if outlawing abortion violates peoples right to privacy, then any attempt to regulate the manipulation of embryos would too.

If the technology's there, then we'd have to deal with such ethical problems. But it this time, it's way too hypothetical tongue
Over here abortion is allowed to the 11th week of pregnancy, and to the 14th week if the embryo is burdened with a severe genetic disorder.

Over here abortion is allowed up until the baby is fully out of the vagina.

Difference much?

What's so offensive about his post?

It's illegal to do it beyond 3rd trimester; in practice most states refuse to prosecute.  Kansas tried but Planned Parenthood claims that giving prosecutors access to client files is unconstitutional. Which means they're guilty.

Re: U.S on the Verge of Healthcare Reform

The doctor who was assassinated in Church advertised his abortions in the last week of a pregnancy. He was one of the top numbers wise performers of that. So yes, abortion can lead to deaths...

There is a famous, if you get away from the lefty media here in the United States, case in which Obama had a chance to vote on abortion, where they were making it a crime to abandon a baby that was unsuccessfully aborted in Illinios. The baby lived for hours in the arms of a nurse, but the baby was denied care because it was 'aborted'. She found it alive in a closet... thrown there like trash.

Re: U.S on the Verge of Healthcare Reform

I think its a missed chance to do a proper health-care reform. It leaves large space for corruption which might eventually cause the average American to loose his health care again because it will be unaffordable.

The way some companies lobbied and got what they wanted is outrageous. What strikes me most is the lack of logic and consistency in what forms of health care you can benefit from. There are over expensive treatments that are paid back while for one such treatment 1000 could have been saved for the same money.

Obama failed to do something good here. Better have no health care as this is m.o.
