Topic: The end of file sharing?

Ok so lets say Mr. Einstein has thought of a way to make it very difficult to keep sharing software. Lets say this method will reduce the actual number of people doing file sharing by anywhere from 40% to 80% from the current amount. Lets also say this makes some softwares pretty damned hard to take at all.

Who should Mr. Einstein talk to besides Microsoft and Apple? And how long before his name is (in)famous online?

Re: The end of file sharing?

Nothing is foolproof, especially when it comes to software. Your efforts will be in vain and our numbers won't suffer. I'm sorry, but you're going to have to relent on your protection of petty copyright laws because they are a much outmoded legislation that requires elimination if you want to foster /true/ capitalist innovation.

Awww....fool. I was going to ask the compression question sad

Re: The end of file sharing?

i dont even use p2p anymore, but i support anyone that uses it. dont like those music and movie industris making profits like crazy and still crying and taking people to court.

i love you all!

Personally, I think any kind of competition to Hollywood is good. Let them watch their profits fall! Long live the internet!

Re: The end of file sharing?

Ok if said method was invented to cut file sharing by 40 - 80% here's what I think would happen

- Much wailing and gnashing of teeth
- Rise in the price of music, movies, software, etc. (costs more to produce and without free file sharing there is no alternative allowing these people to gouge use for a while)
- A way around it will be found
- And we're back to where we are now.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Re: The end of file sharing?

Prices will raise if you do so. File sharing is the markets answere to unaturally high prices some compagnies are allowed to make because they have a monopoly. They have a monopoly by law. How stupid can we be?

Property rights is justifiable till a certain degree but not that far. If you absolutely need to control copy rights that much you should set a maximum price as well. Its mostly not the creator or performer who gets the jackpot anyway.

Re: The end of file sharing?

There is no way to stop file sharing, except to nuke the entire world 7 times over.

Whilst there are connected devices, there will be file sharing.

Re: The end of file sharing?

And you don't even make the distinction between breaking copy protection of software or media and filesharing itself. There's a difference, Great Compressor.

Re: The end of file sharing?

I think the biggest distinction is legal vs illegal.  And provided there is legal file sharing... always allows the use of the very same system to send a file to someone who doesn't have the copyright to that file.

OK, so let's say that Einstein is behind the curve, let's say that all of the smart pirates now use torrents rather than p2p programmes.

How many years back in time should Einstein mail his idea before he finds a time period where it will actually matter; 5 or 10?

Re: The end of file sharing?

I remember Einstein's compression algorithm... the one that (according to his claims) could recursively reduce any stream of data to zero bits, whilst still somehow preserving it smile

Re: The end of file sharing?

Psychogenesis,
I was and am 2 busy to go in detail about why his approach *may work but pretty much you have a rulebook [ie non zero permanent storage] that allows you to decript everything.  So it is *possible to cut down the amount you transmit by having both ends having this same rule book.  To the "zero" bits claim that's just silly you need to preserve enough to decode and well... zero just aint enough.  I've been meaning to take a good look at his idea but never have either the motivation or time:D always one or the other.  Like now, kinda have the motivation but not the time.  And trust me when I have the time, I can bet you I won't have the motivation tongue.

Re: The end of file sharing?

Question - I know how compression works smile Einstein (if i remember correctly) claimed that his algorithm could reduce the length of any stream by at least one bit. If this was true, you could apply the algorithm recursively, reducing by one bit at a time, until there's none left smile I'm not saying that such an algorithm exists at all, on the contrary, I see its mathematical impossibility.

Re: The end of file sharing?

Psychogenesis,
Your wrong, your ignoring the existence *on both the sender and reciever side of these rulebooks.  Pretty much you have these huge collection of already precomputed cyphers so for each "stage" of the encryption or decryption you simply look up the answer and don't need to send the actuall data as it already resides in the rulebook.

111001100
Combine all 111's to = 11
001 = 00
100 = 01

That the rulebook for the first compression yielding
110001
If by some magic the reciever/decompressor "knew" this then yes it could be done recursively.  I didn't do compression/decompression justice but do you know of the "Mathematically" impossible turbo Pascal codes.  I can't remember it if is speed or compression but it "broke" the mathematical rules and achieved the "impossible".
