apparently the Russian military will be completely rearmed within 10 years.
Russia is continuing to develop its strategic nuclear missile capabilities which includes new missiles.
the cold war is over, what are the Russians doing?
Russia is developing a military to protect their best interests...
they appear to be locked in an arms race with North Korea for "Most bitchin' missle wipeout"
Russia has a pre-80s armed force: Big, mean and very ineffective.
They need to update to todays leaner, more tactile and effective requirements.

Sure did...which is why this whole thing is happening - to modernize Russia's
armed forces.

The Russians should not be underestimated. They have HUGE resources and many nations in Europe depend on it as well as many other countries. This is where their power lies. Any time soon oil/gas prices may go up again.
The oil prices are already high.

This reasoning should be used to promote the use of nuclear and renewable power sources. I'll garantue it will win more souls than the eco/nature spin that's being used today. Europe is still going to be everyone's bitch concerning recourses like iron and the like, though. 
Maybe they should draft a resourcer :S.
It's like this: up until the 1900's Europe was able to extract a lot of its resources from its various colonies. However, since its defeats in the 19th century, it can no longer depend on its colonies for its resource requirements. Thus, it is now relegated to purchasing its resources, running high, unsustainable inflation. Its only hope is to convince resource-rich economies to follow along with its inflationary system for the sake of world peace (not world prosperity).
Will the developing world go along with this ploy? It's too soon to tell.
I'd like to see statistics on where the worlds resources really are, xeno. More then likely developing
countries aren't the only with resources, they are the cheapest labour and easiest to manipulate.
So its a two-way street. Developed countries get resources, developing countries get funding and
an injection into their economic backbone. If the developing countries stop, so too do the developed
countries.

amphibious assault ships developed by USA for our Marines and copied by other nations
they have a hover deck where a heavy hovercraft barge can haul tanks and armored vehicles to the beach without using a pier and a short flight deck for helicopters and VTOL jets. They carry a few thousand troops, vehicles and helicopters.
These are French, the Mistral class
All armies copy other armies...
They use what works.
