Um... probably every time in every region where Christianity was THE dominating religion... (I'm thinking Middle Age Europe...)

In regions where there is some social stigma against being non-Christian (which actually may exist in at least some regions... I know Italy has an extremely strong pro-Christianity stance), there probably is motivation for someone to say they're Christian, but not practice it.


It's pretty much like saying that Saddam Hussein was clearly the best choice for President in Iraq since he got 100% of the vote in the last election.  smile


Now, I'm not saying that the problem is purely a Christian issue.  In fact, I would say that Islam probably has a huge ratio of people claiming to be Muslim, yet being of some other religious teaching, considering the huge penalties for converting from Islam that exist in some countries (Afghanistan tried to condemn someone to death for converting from Islam).

how is this relevant if you think the next largest religion is just as guilty if not more guilty of it? what point are you trying to make? its still pretty clear that Christianity is the largest religion and Catholicism is the largest sect of Christianity.

Because the groups that would be misrepresented in these cases include religious affiliations other than Christianity and Islam.

If Morbo's argument is that a large enough portion of people who claim to be Christians fall in a category that is in fact a false claim, either because they are socially intimidated or because they're non-practicing members, then it means the number of atheists is vastly greater than what would be projected.




Are you really a Catholic if you only go to church on Christmas and Easter?  Are you really a Muslim if you no longer pray five times a day?

just wondering, how religion has anything to do with evolution? I think anyone whom does not believe in evolution should never be taken seriously for any wisdom once so ever.  i know christians that believe in evolution and christians who dont.  and based off personal experience, people who deny evolution because their "religion" doesn't allow it, is full of crap and they are probably not listening to the word of thier faith, they are most likely listening to the word of an ignorant person and does not know any better.

mark my words, Evolution is FACT and soon the U.S. Government will have no choice but to allow the FACT of Evolution to be taught in schools. When that happens, our children will finally learn the truth about evolution without religious stigma. 

Everyone who denies evolution and their only defense in from the religious sect, should pick up a book or watch carl sagan and get the right information before debating any piont whatsoever.

Now, does anyone have any way to disprove Evolution without any religious approach?  after all, religion in essence is just ancient storytelling created to control the masses of people as a primative form of government with the use of the stars.

religion has served its purpose, it was firstly a convenient form of self-government, the curtailing of certain unwanted behaviors, then along comes "tithing", i.e. taxation. the problem with religion is that at some point someone was intelligent enough to seperate church and state and the world religions are trying to hold on to what they feel is their territory, ie, the abortion issue, gay marriage, stem cell research (before they found out how to replicate them). In summary "thank you" religions for teaching us not to murder eachother for no reason, thank you religion for teaching us to marry and be faithful to eachother, but i feel that your time is over, we have progressed to the point where we no longer need you. good bye.

I would rather be honestly damned, than hypocritically demoralized.

there are alot of catholics and/or muslims. they dont have the exact same beleifs within the same religion. as long as they beleive they are a muslim or catholic, i dont see how you can claim they arent. it would be like saying, sorry budhists, you arent a real religion, your views are too different from my religious views for you guys to be a religion.

My local shop keeper cannot go home to visit his family because he will be behedded (or something like that) for converting to Catholicism (for love). No one he knows even believes, apparently, but they say that they are for an easy life... kinda like when I used to say I believed in Santa and God.

claiming is doing anything that would suggest you are a catholic. such as simply saying you are a catholic.  considering yourself a catholic is based on your knowledge of yourself and what you associate with the word, catholic, you think the word, catholic, accurately describes you.

if they think they're catholic and the vatican thinks they're catholic, who are you to tell them, they arent catholic?

sure, there might be acouple people counted as christian that arent actually christian. but Christian is largest by a very large factor. and the 2nd largest is Islam, and they're a distant 2nd and if anything they probably have a higher amount of people counted as Muslims that arent and after muslim is Hindu which has less then half the recorded numbers as Christianity and because of its large presence in poor countries, like Islam is, there are probably higher percentages of them that arent really hindu then christians. after Hindu is Buddhists, which have 1/8 the recorded size of christianity, do you honestly think they're larger? and then after buddhists you start having relgioins with less then 1 percent the recorded number of christians...

i am still waiting for someone to state what religion they think is larger then Christianity...

  I think, based on 1st-hand experience, 2nd-hand experience, as well as video evidence, that the penalites for... leaving Christianity are much worse than mere death:
Shunned by family, friends, perhaps even work-mates. A fate far worse than death for any social creature.

  Let us take you for example, in your woo-woo-christian community: What would happen if you... chose a new path? Better yet, what would happen if they realised you were even thinking about choosing a new path?

nothing, i have a friend that was raised Catholic and became a Satanist. he hasnt lost any friends that i know of. he hasnt been shunned... it is not a big deal to us...

what if a country became a Communist  nation. Pure Communist  ideology is no religion ?. Any Christians or Muslims would be persecuted. Fat chance of this ever happening in a Islamic state, unless maybe they run out of virgins.

same thing with atheists... i have never felt that the relationships i have within my community was because of my religion, and i would not expect anyone to shun me if i switched to a different religion whether that is Atheism, Agnosticism, Satanism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, or another form of Christianity... The way me and other people in my community were raised,  the respect we have for human life is unconditional and isnt based on what religion they are...
