Topic: US Elections 2008

Finally a chance to dump it all into one thread.

This November there's federal elections for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency in all 50 states.  Each state has been assigned a number of Electors, based on the number of Representatives and Senators.  The Electoral College actually picks the President.  This system prevents people from becoming President on a "To Hell With The Corn Belt Anyhow" platform or other program totally destructive to some regional economy.  As we all know in 2000 Gore won more votes but not more Electors and Bush became President.

At the same day, 33 states will have elections for a Senator, who will serve 6 years.  1/3 of the Senate is elected every two years.

At the same day, in all 50 states, 435 Representatives will be elected.  100% of the House of Representatives is elected every two years.   I personally think we should have Senators serve for 2 years instead of 6, make them more responsible to the country and less inclined to screw us all over and cuddle themselves over their stupid chummy rules like the filibuster.

At the same day, in many states and cities, governors and city councils and referendums are also being decided.

Because each town has different measures on the ballot, and each state has different elections, the actual voting is largely operated locally, under rules set down by the 50 state governments, according to principles and laws set up by the federal government and the Constitution.  There's no national ballot.

So you may hear different Americans talk about what is on their ballot on Election Day and that is why.  We're all voting on the President and Representatives, some of us for Senators, and there's lots of local stuff up for a vote as well.

I may not vote at all for President.   I don't support what McCain wants to do, I think he has trampled our Bill of Rights by regulating who can advertise a political point of view and when and for how much.  He also wants millions of illegal immigrants to be welcomed and cuddled and petted and that means millions more will come too.  I definitely don't want Hillary/Obama for the same reasons, plus they are socialist noobs.

This concludes the statement of the chair.  The balance of our time is yielded to comments from the floor. <bangs gavel>

At least our boss can't get canned by a simple majority vote of the national legislature...

Everything should be decided by what the majority wants.

Thats democratic.

Re: US Elections 2008

well, not everything. but if you're going to have an election anyway it would be logical that the winner wins..

obama's  guna win the election.... PERIOD
so....

guys what else is up?

Re: US Elections 2008

avo, athens democracy had no separation of powers (no real one atleast) so there goes your flawed analogy tongue

anyways, either you have a majority rules regulation or its no democracy. Seriously, its not more or less democracy but having a real democracy at all. Defending someone winning with less votes is undemocratic and nothing else (esspecially if done as mind-numbingly stupid as Yell did (I mean seriously, man, just because it happens by coincidence that your favourited states "Corn-belt place at arse of the US of A" have more influence on the politics of the USA than they should have from their population (which you are obviously very happy about...) doesnt mean that the system is good (thats like Microsoft stating that their newest bug is actually a "feature")))

Yes, you're special. Just like everyone else.

If Obama wins the nomination, I will be making preparations to leave the US for Argentina until his tyrannical proscription against "rich" people is over.

Sure. My condo will be sizable enough. We can go pick-up desperate girls in Buenos Aires and have a good time as twins, living the high life in the city's most affluent neighborhood.

Re: US Elections 2008

One more time......kids.  The individual vote count is tallied for each state.  The WINNER of each state, wins ALL the Delegates that state has to offer.

The Larger the state, the larger the number of Delegates.  States like NY, CA, and TX are much more important to win than UT, MT or ME.

The Popular vote is only significant at the state level, NOT the National Level.

Basically, you win CA, NY and TX and you win the Election w/maybe Three more mid level states.

* * * *

Obama or Hilary....... They have no chance vs. McCain.  Sorry.

I have stated FROM the BEGINNING, as Hilary was running away in the polls,....that she would NOT win the Primary.
Im backing away from that now.  I think she will pull this out.

She will win TX and OH today.  And she will win the Dem Nod.

Reason:  Many Republicans are going to cross over in TX to vote Dem and pull the lever for her.
I think she has OH won already.

This will be ONE nasty Democrat Convention this year, as their stupid "Super Delegate" design will be their down fall.
The Democrat party has installed this system of allowing uncommitted Delegates to vote as they please, and not as their states have voted.     Talk about a party that supposedly embraces the people and their wants and needs.....ROFL.

This SUper DElegate control tactic is going to bite them hard.

For this reason, because of the fight that will last into the Convention,.....

THe Republican Party will Win in Nov.

Re: US Elections 2008

the democratic party has already shown how little they care about the democratic process when they took away Michigan's and FLorida's votes in the primaries, i dont see why you think its so unlikely for the superdelegates to go against who has the popular vote.

I don't think McCain will do it.  Too many Bush voters are pissed and Obama is bringing out millions of new Democrats.   I don't see enough people drifting to McCain even if Denver ends up a WWE match.

Re: US Elections 2008

Yell,

Im not happy w/McCain either.  I see a crossover group that will Not support a candidate willing to pull us out of Iraq, "talk" w/ terror states internationally.  Domestically, willing to socialize Medical care, tax the middle class, and open the borders.

You take all of these issues, on the whole, and this platform kills the Dems in a national election.

Toss in a battle of the Dems all the way to the convention......that really hurts them.

Super Delegates.  Why have super delegates when you have the state make their selection.  3rd and 4th run candidates can give their delegate support to the leader or a the close 2nd.  Let the process, not free wheeling Democrat big wigs select the nominee.

Fool...... good job.

Re: US Elections 2008

the democratic party is neck in neck but i think ultimately that Obama wil win the presidential election IF he gets the nomination because his main voters are high school and collage students which tend to not vote but he has convinced them to do so. So, if he keeps gaining momentum than more of them will go out to vote in the "final" election and thus, almost all of his current voters and anyone else he can et from the younger crowd wil vote for him and any of the prior Hilary voters that have not been completely turned off of voting for Obama by all of the mudslinging going on between them will also vote for him.

McCain on the other hand will get some of the votes from the mudslinging and a few extra from people voting in the "real" election but at this point the only way he will win the presidency is if he convinces the populace that the war in Iraq is good which will be hard considering people generally rejecting war in the past and people currently not very thrilled with the war.
