A Libyan motion calling for the dismemberment of Switzerland was rejected by the United Nations about a month ago, a UN spokesman said on Thursday.
Farhan Haq told the Swiss News Agency that Libya had submitted the proposal for discussion by the General Assembly. It was thrown out by the committee responsible for setting the assembly's agenda, since it contradicted the principles of the UN charter.

According to the charter, no member country can threaten the existence or sovereignty of another.

The document was therefore never circulated or published.

Swiss parliamentarian Christa Markwalder had told a Swiss public television news programme on Wednesday that Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi intended to present the proposal to the United Nations General Assembly, which he is due to address on September 23.

The Swiss UN mission in New York told swissinfo.ch on Thursday that the committee which decides on the agenda for General Assembly debates had not received any such motion.

Markwalder, who is vice-president of the House of Representatives external policies commission, had expressed concern that Libya would use its forthcoming year-long presidency of the UN General Assembly to damage Switzerland's reputation.

She said Swiss diplomacy needed to work hard to avoid a scandal at the UN meeting.

Gaddafi first mentioned the idea of dismemberment during the G8 summit in Italy in July. Switzerland "is a world mafia and not a state", he said, adding that it was "formed of an Italian community that should return to Italy, another German community that should return to Germany, and a third French community that should return to France".

The United States ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, noted on Wednesday that the upcoming UN meeting would be devoted solely to disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, adding it would be "irrelevant and misplaced" for any head of state to talk about unrelated subjects."

I find it very unfortunate the west let khadaffi live for all these years, someone should have really done something to this tinpot dictator after lockerbie...

now on the other hand I would really like to see how the swiss hold up in warfare against invasion by the surrounding three major western nations, I mean that place is a frigging natural fortress and they've got boatloads of cash to shell out

....i was under the impression that (if you discount the ones guarding the pope) they have no army either and are a "neutral-country"....so it would be kind of similar to a hare krishna versus crips war wouldn't it? (ie very short!)

Agree with Nemeara... The only reason I can think that people dislike the Swiss is because they're neutral bastards!!!
Maybe the Swiss wouldnt loan Lybia money? Or ripped them off real good smile

Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi is set to ask the United Nations to 'abolish' Switzerland and share the land among its neighbouring countries.

The eccentric dictator has filed a motion with the U.N. saying the Alpine state should be wiped off the map and split among France, Italy and Germany.

Gaddafi is set to present his bizarre plan when Libya takes over the year-long presidency of the U.N. general Assembly on September 15.

Yes, with whoever takes on the swiss being the Hare Krishna's... Ther eis no standing army, but every citizen is in fact part of the reserves and they take their responsibilities very seriously...

Swiss is still a paradise for taxpayers who seek to avoid national taxation at home. so every nation faced with billions of lost tax income which eventually flowed in states like swiss would react along that line. e. g. our minister of finance compared swiss with an under developed city (Ououagadongo?) in northwest africa und threatend that it would be useful to keep the 7. cavalry ready as it was before Yuma, if swiss would not cut their benefits for tax refugees and cooperate with our nations to hunt them down.

Libya doesn't have to recognise Switzerland if it doesn't want too. However, Switzerland qualifies under the montevideo convention, more of a claim to statehood than many other nations.

The criteria for statehood is simple nowadays anyways, all you need is recognition from the permanent SC nations. Noone really cares what the other n00bs think.

Destiny is only for those too own to make their fate weak.
